Socialist Francesca Hong on how she'll win in a state Trump carried twice

The article was an interesting read for me as I had not paid much attention to the race for Wisconsin's governor. Francesca's platform is "permanent affordability".

>She says it includes free childcare, fully funding public schools, higher taxes on the ultrawealthy and corporations, and a moratorium on new data centers.

And

>She also framed her campaign as a challenge to the Trump administration, saying that if elected she would use "the full force of the executive to protect all Wisconsinites." That stance includes a hard line on immigration enforcement, as Mamdani has done in New York City.

>"I do not plan on cooperating and working with ICE," she said.

In regards to the fact that Trump won in Wisconsin:

>Hong argues the state that voted for Trump 21 months ago is not the state she is running in now.

>"What has changed is that lives have just gotten harder and harder for everyday people across the state," she said, pointing to gas prices, property taxes and grocery bills.

>The Electability Question

>Hong's critics have spent the final weeks of the Democratic primary less focused on whether she can win Tuesday than on whether she can win in November.

>Republicans, rival Democrats and, in the closing stretch, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers, a Democrat, have questioned whether her progressive record would leave her vulnerable against Wisconsin Representative Tom Tiffany, a Republican.

>Tiffany has called her "a card-carrying socialist committed to abolishing the police, the Senate, and prisons," and has criticized her appearances with Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar and online streamer Hasan Piker.

>Hong said she does not embrace the full national platform of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

Do take the time to read the entire article, I only highlighted a few points.

Presbyterian Hospital kitchen serving patients gets red tag from city health inspector - KOAT

Part of the report:

>According to the City of Albuquerque, the July 15 inspection began after complaints that food was not being served hot.

>Inspectors documented 15 violations and issued the facility a red tag. City officials said the kitchen was never forced to shut down and was allowed to continue operating while staff worked to correct the problems on site.

>The inspection involved the hospital kitchen that prepares food for patients, not food service for the general public.

>Among the most serious issues cited were hot foods being held below the required 135 degrees, including sliced meat, chicken strips and potato wedges measured between 110 and 126 degrees. Inspectors also found cold items above the required 41 degrees, including hummus at 45 degrees and grape jelly at 46 degrees.

>The report also listed sanitation and maintenance concerns, including debris buildup on an ice machine and can opener blade, wet-stacked utensils, dirty nonfood-contact surfaces, and buildup on walls and floors throughout the kitchen.

And

>City officials said the red tag was issued because violations were serious, but because the hospital was actively correcting them while inspectors were on site, the kitchen was not shut down.

>The city now says the Presbyterian facility has a green tag.

Hollywood warned us 30 years ago and I think we're still not ready for advanced aliens attacking!

ID4 hit US theaters on July 3, 1996. As with most summer blockbusters, there are some great visual effects. I especially enjoy this one!

Titanic survivor's grandson shares little-known story of Chinese passengers who survived - CBS NYC

Beginning of article:

>A little-known story of six Chinese passengers who survived the sinking of the Titanic is adding to the legend of the famous shipwreck.

>While the famous movie depicts Kate Winslet's character, Rose, surviving the tragedy by clinging to floating debris, it was actually Steven Fong's grandfather, Fang Lang, who used a door to stay afloat in the icy water.

>"With my grandfather's story, he actually went down with the ship, and to everyone's amazement, he found his way onto a door," Fong said. "In the theatrical movie, James Cameron does reveal that my grandfather was the inspiration for the Jack and Rose end scene."

>Fong said Lang never talked to his family about the Titanic, so there's a lot of mystery behind his story.

When the Carpathia arrived in NY with the Titanic survivors on aboard, the six Chinese men had to stay on the ship due to the Chinese Exclusion Act. The article adds on that the Perelman Performing Arts Center is producing a show called "Unsinkable," based on the Chinese survivors story.

Nancy Pelosi Endorses San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan for Congress

Sound like it's going to be a tough battle ahead for Chan.

>Rep. Nancy Pelosi announced Monday that she is endorsing San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan to be her replacement in Congress.

>“I know I love this district. I know the Congress and I know Connie. I’m proud to endorse Democrat Connie Chan, and ask you to join me in electing her to Congress,” Pelosi said in her much-anticipated endorsement statement.

>Pelosi, who has represented San Francisco in Washington, D.C., for nearly 40 years and became one of the nation’s most powerful politicians, will retire in less than a year.

>Chan immigrated to San Francisco’s Chinatown from Hong Kong as a child and has represented the Richmond District on the Board of Supervisors since 2021.

And

>So far, Chan has secured support from labor groups and other politicians, including U.S. Sen. Adam Schiff and former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown.

>But she has trailed two of her competitors, also Democrats, in the polls and has raised only a fraction of the war chests they wield. The latest endorsement marks a significant win for Chan and could give her campaign a boost just weeks ahead of the primary, where the top two vote getters will proceed to the general election.

“Golden” No More: For Her 2026 Met Gala Debut, K-Pop Demon Hunter’s Ejae Is in Her Silver Era - Vogue

From the article:

>Tonight, Ejae wanted to continue to break charts and make headlines in other ways, using this opportunity in the spotlight to highlight her Korean culture even more. “I wanted to represent elements of Korean culture on fashion’s biggest night,” said Ejae in an exclusive interview. “When Swarovski first came to my creative team and me, they brought the idea of the sculpture of Venus, and that felt right for the theme. Jeffrey and Theo, my creative directors, wanted to bring something Korean into it, not as a visual reference but as something deeper.”

>That reference ended up being the “기녀” which in English translates to the female courtesans of the Joseon dynasty. “These women were artists, the most culturally refined figures of their time, in music, poetry, and conversation. So the conversation with Swarovski became, what happens when the Venus meets the 기녀?” Ejae said. “Two archetypes of femininity, one Western, one Eastern, and the look quickly came together from there.”

>Sparkles were a must for Ejae, and, lucky for her, being dressed by the Swarovski team meant crystals were available in unlimited qualities. The evening’s look used thousands of crystals so that the star could “keep shining like she was born to be,” as she sings in “Golden.”

>Ejae continued to further showcase her bicultural heritage through her makeup and hair choice, opting for an updo held together with Korean hairpins called “binyeos.” These traditional hairpins have been worn by Korean women for centuries, and tonight, at the 2026 Met Gala, they only continue to have relevance in Korean culture thanks to Ejae.

In the mildly interesting category for me, is the fact that Mayor Mamdani was a rapper in his younger days. His tax filings showed he got $1643 in music royalties last year.

From part of the article:

>Mamdani, who rapped under the monikers “Young Cardamom” and “Mr. Cardamom,” joked Thursday that New Yorkers should “go to Spotify” if they want to help his bottom line. “A lot of people say they’re listening,” he added. “They’re not listening.”

>Mamdani began rapping in high school, releasing socially conscious songs in his 20s on subjects ranging from Indian flatbread to colonialism. He has described himself as a “C-list rapper” following in the footsteps of his childhood heroes, including the indie-rap group Das Racist.
