Looking for lesser known scary historical dramas.

Since the spooky season unofficially begins on July 5, I’m looking for something creepy that happens to also be a period piece. I watch way too much tv so I’ve seen most or all of the well-known suggestions. Any time period, any country/language is good. I’m really looking for that little-known, hidden gem. Thank you!

Question about deaths at Gloriavale

So I’m rewatching several of the shows about Gloriavale and one thing that’s struck me is the small number of people in their communal cemetery. In the most recent documentary they say there’s about 20
people buried there and they’ve been there since 1991. Why are there so few people who have died?
There haven’t been any stillborn babies, or people with cancer or other diseases, or farming or construction accidents? It seems like a really small number of people to be buried in 35 years, but maybe I’m wrong.

Glorious 39

I just watched this because of a comment on someone else’s post on here (I wish I could remember which one but I can’t) and I’m wondering who else has seen it and your thoughts. It’s kind of a deep cut- I’ve never seen it discussed on here, at least not recently- and what a strange little movie. I’m honestly not sure if I liked it or not, but it did keep me interested enough to watch until the end. Some of it felt like an absolute fever dream but I’m not sure if that was the intention, especially the scene where >!she’s in the basement at the ambassador party, the weird liminal space made it feel very backrooms-esque!< The cast is excellent, with the always lovely Romola Garai, Christopher Lee, Bill Nighy, a young looking Hugh Bonneville, Eddie Redmayne, David Tennant, and Jeremy Northam (who played Ivor Novello in Gosford Park). It almost plays as a period horror thriller but I’m honestly not sure how to categorize it.

New documentary on Gloriavale.

For anyone else who is slightly obsessed with the extreme fundamentalist Gloriavale community in New Zealand, there is a new documentary on them on Prime. It’s called Devotion: Obedience or Betrayal. I have no idea if it’s any good because I just started it but if you’re like me and want to find out anything you can about them, it just came out a few days ago. If anyone has seen it, I’d love to hear your take on it.

Looking for your darkest recommendations.

By darkest I mean that in any sense of the word- dark palette, depressing or very serious subject matter, bleak, scary. Doesn’t have to be all of them. I’m open to movies or series from anywhere. Basically I’m looking for the complete opposite of The Gilded Age or Bridgerton.

I’m doing a rewatch/finally finishing Carnivale and realized I haven’t seen any other pieces that take place in the Dust Bowl. I’ve read The Grapes of Wrath of course, but what are some other things in the same time period and place? I’m not generally into things “Western” but I’d be very interested in the plight of the migrant workers, Okies, or the regular people at this time in the US.

I’m sad. Like crying into the washer as I switch loads of laundry sad. I don’t know what to do about my life but I am so so lonely. I am married (divorce isn’t an option at the mo for many reasons but I am slowly working toward it) but the main thing is I miss my mom. She isn’t dead, we are estranged, and I just miss her. But not really her, I miss having A mom, but not MY mom, if that makes sense. I feel like because I didn’t have a mom who actually wanted to be a mom that I am not a good mom to my own kids. I feel like they don’t deserve to be stuck with me. I have no one to go to for advice or even to vent to. Can anyone just give me a sliver of hope that it might get better down the road? I’m 46 and I feel pathetic and worthless.
