Apt Pupil (1998) A high school student discovers his elderly neighbor's dark secret

Trailer: https://youtu.be/mFfXqzd7PlI?si=eFP8pwyeFbnVoI8R

Brad Renfro (R.I.P.) plays Todd Bowden, a 1980s Southern California teenager who discovers that his elderly neighbor is actually fugitive Nazi war criminal Kurt Dussander (Ian McKellan) who is hiding in the suburbs of America. Instead of turning him in Todd blackmails Dussander into telling him the real stories about the Holocaust and the death camps.

Based on story written by Stephen King which I haven't read. Ian McKellan playing one of the most chilling characters of his career. Brad Renfro was only 14 at the time and manages to hold his own against McKellan.

In Search of Darkness (2019) A 4 1/2 hour documentary about 1980s horror movies

Trailer: https://youtu.be/MoWTZr3pU4A?si=iyX0Tyvt53u5UUuP

This documentary is a love letter to the horror movies of the 1980s. It goes year by year through the decade examining everything from popular horror like Friday the 13th or A Nightmare on Elm Street to direct-to-video hidden gems and cult oddities, practical effects, and the wonderfully strange movies you stumbled upon while browsing the video store shelves. The documentary digs into the slasher explosion, practical special effects, monster makeup, vampires, zombies, werewolves, sci-fi horror, horror soundtracks, sex and nudity, the horror fandom itself and the 80s VHS revolution.

People like John Carpenter, Heather Langenkamp, Joe Dante, Barbara Crampton, Jeffrey Combs, Cassandra Peterson, Kane Hodder, and dozens of other filmmakers, actors, and horror personalities sit down and talk about their favourite movies. The filmmakers recorded over 100 hours of interview footage before condensing everything into a final 4 1/2 hour documentary.

Starting as a crowdfunding project on Kickstarter and Indiegogo raising $309,000 from 1532 backers without any outside studio or investors dictating the project.

Gooby (2009) A young boy's imaginary bear friend comes to life

Trailer: https://youtu.be/gaW1ar7jcTI?si=Xw-lTDi3\_Gj7J8x6

I was going to save this movie for Tuesday Turds but it is so bad it surpasses Turd status.

11 year old Matthew is having a rough time. He's moved into a new house that he thinks is haunted and going to a new school where he's being bullied. When Matthew wishes for somebody to protect him Gooby comes to life, a 6 foot tall orange talking teddy bear with the voice of Robbie Coltrane. Gooby is here to help Matthew overcome his fears and make new friends at school. Meanwhile eccentric teacher Mr. Nerdlinger (Eugene Levy who obviously doesn't want to be here) caught a glimpse of Gooby and wants to become famous by taking a picture and proving he exists.

Written and directed by a Canadian filmmaker, shot in Barrie Ontario, independently financed by Gooby Entertainment Inc (a real production company) for $6.5 million. Released in 27 theatres for a 1 week run making a grand total of...$3234.

Thursday Tubi TV Treasure: Pinky and the Brain (1995-1998) Each night 2 mice come up with plans to take over the world

Pinky and the Brain...and Larry: https://youtu.be/VorIn2ISK6w?si=SRui0W-ApDJj12Q8

Pinky and the Brain will be leaving Tubi at the end of August. Watch it and enjoy it while you can.

Pinky and the Brain are two genetically altered mice at Acme Labs. Every night Brain comes up with a brilliant but absurdly complicated plan to take over the world. Getting the world addicted to mind controlling cheese, winning the Kentucky Derby, or becoming the world's best country singer, Pinky tries to help him, something goes terribly wrong, the plan fails, and by the end of the episode they're back in their cages.

Created by Tom Ruegger and produced by Steven Spielberg due to fan demand for more Pinky and the Brain hijinks. Maurice LaMarche studied the voice and mannerisms of Orson Welles making Brain sound more dramatic and villainous. Rob Paulsen went the opposite direction and decided to play Pinky as more silly and playful. It was Rob's idea to add more nonsense words to Pinky's vocabulary like Narf, Poit, and Zort.

If you ever get a chance to meet Maurice and/or Rob do it. They are the two nicest and funniest celebrities I've ever met.

I'll do a TV Treasures for Pinky, Elmyra, and the Brain if Tubi ever adds that show. The fan hatred and behind the scenes drama behind that cartoon is just hilarious.

Can't Hardly Wait (1998) The entire graduating class gathers for a high school party

Trailer: https://youtu.be/qukvN6ieeMY?si=NKeK-R\_cNDGN-\_nv

The seniors have graduated, someone throws a party and everybody shows up. Amanda Beckett has just broken up with Mike Dexter so Preston Myers wants to finally tell her he's in love with her. Meanwhile nerdy kid William plans to enact his revenge against his bully Mike Dexter but becomes the life of the party while Kenny is accidentally locked in the bathroom with Denise.

A few fun facts:

Jennifer Love Hewitt was the first choice to play Amanda.

Ethan Embry was a huge stoner at the time and doesn't really remember making the movie. Jennifer Love Hewitt knew, didn't really like Ethan, and sent Ethan a gift basket filled with breath mints before they had to shoot their makeout scene.

Watermelon Guy was played by Jason Segal in his movie debut. He was told to carry a watermelon, be weird, steal the scene if you can.

Seth Green was fresh off the first Austin Powers movie but not yet Oz on Buffy. Oz would premiere on Buffy 4 months after Can't Hardly Wait was released.

Charlie Korsmo's first movie since Hook. He was attending MIT when he got the role. After Can't Hardly Wait Charlie would leave acting to pursue Physics and then eventually Law. Charlie would later become a University Law Professor.

Melissa Joan Hart's first movie. She was filming Sabrina the Teenage Witch at the same time.

Other future famous faces would also appear in the movie. Jamie Pressly, Amber Benson as Banana Girl, Clea Duvall just before The Faculty, Jenna Elfman still in her first season of Dharma and Greg, little appearances by Chris Owens as the Klepto Kid, and a Clueless reunion with both Breckin Meyer and Donald Faison.

Tuesday Tubi Turd: Valentine (2001) A group of girls are being stalked by a killer wearing a Cupid mask

Trailer: https://youtu.be/9KYtyaXIXZQ?si=a8IXrD2Ft3AEszDi

At a Valentine's Day dance in 1988, a group of girls reject and humilate awkward nerdy kid Jeremy. Now as adults those girls start receiving creepy Valentine's Day cards and being stalked by a creep wearing a Cupid mask. Is Jeremy back and out for revenge?

Katherine Heigl was still starring on Roswell and had a tight schedule. She was only only on the set of Valentine for a total of 3 days.

Jennifer Love Hewitt almost played Paige but she turned it down to shoot Heartbreakers instead so the role went to Denise Richards. Denise Richards hot tub electrocution scene would take 4 DAYS to shoot.

And then there's David Boreanaz. Boreanaz was busy with Angel at the time and would fly from LA to Vancouver to shoot his scenes. He shot all of his scenes in 2 weeks. It's a good thing that David Boreanaz became an iconic television actor because he is a terrible movie actor.

Saturday Morning Cartoon Tubi TV Treasure: Redwall (1999-2002) Matthias the mouse trains to become a great warrior

Season 1 intro: https://youtu.be/\_2W\_3uXqsfw?si=YA0VtAsksihzToNV I am that is.

Season 2 intro: https://youtu.be/9pfB4D\_6Z8c?si=L5yu-UBPtZtuBPaN

What happens when you take medieval fantasy, remove the humans, replace them with mice, evil rats and snakes, owls and other woodland animals and hand them medieval weaponry? You get Redwall.

Redwall Abbey is the peaceful home to mice, badgers, moles, squirrels and other Woodland creatures. The peace is broken when rat Cluny the Scourge arrives with an army of rats and weasels and decides the Abbey belongs to him. Meanwhile Matthias the mouse discovers the legend of Martin the Warrior, a heroic mouse who once defended Redwall. Matthias goes on a quest to find Martin's legendary sword and gather fighters so he can fight Cluney and defend the Abbey.

Even though it's a fantasy story involving animal characters things get pretty dark. Children are kidnapped, and animals are killed. There are battles, betrayals, revenge, slavery, castle seiges, flying mice-eating owls and venomous snakes.

Based on the Redwall book series (22 books in total) written by Brian Jacques. Produced by the good people at Nelvana for 3 seasons and 39 episodes that would air Saturday mornings on PBS in the US and Teletoon in Canada. In season 2 the show would introduce Slagar the Cruel, an evil fox voiced by Tim Curry because Tim Curry was doing all the cartoons around this time.

Thursday Tubi TV Treasure: Care Bears (1985-1988) Cute and colorful animals use the power of kindness and friendship to help children and defeat villains

Intro: https://youtu.be/2lpeFfAA2LQ?si=V1nHmtRA2VN1rptK

I saw the new Cozy flair and I couldn't resist. What's more cozy than a cartoon created by a greeting card company about animals that use the power of kindness to defeat their enemies?

The Care Bears live in the land of Care-A-Lot where they travel to Earth to help whenever a child is feeling lost, lonely, scared, jealous, or selfish.

The Cares Bears use the Care Bear Stare, a beam of magical energy from their bellies powered by love and friendship to defeat No Heart, an evil hooded wizard who lives in a spooky castle who wants to rid the world of love, caring, and friendship and spread unhappiness. With the help of his clumsy minion Beastly and annoying neice Shreeky.

Care Bears were created by American Greetings greeting card company and animated handrawn by the good people at Nelvana. What started as greeting card artwork it would expand into a franchise that included cartoons, toys, a couple movies, and even a Netflix reboot.

High School High (1996) A teacher gets a job teaching students at a inner city high school

Trailer: https://youtu.be/cRH0J4GIum4?si=D51yssjh76vYTxE4

Richard Clark is optimistic teacher who leaves an elite private school to teach at a high school in the inner city. The students steal his car on the first day, the principal hates the students, and gangs are roaming the halls. With the help of a fellow teacher Richard refuses to give up and inspires his students to do better but ends up in the middle of a gang turf war.

A parody of inner city high school inspirational teacher movies like Dangerous Minds or Stand and Deliver. Written by Airplane and Naked Gun writer David Zucker. With Jon Lovitz in his first starring role.

High School High was almost directed by Trey Parker. Trey Parker and Matt Stone rented a hotel room during the Sundance Film Festival to show off their new movie Cannibal the Musical. David Zucker recognized Parker's talent for absurd comedy and offered him a chance to direct a real movie. Trey Parker turned it down because he wanted to work on his own projects.

Tuesday Tubi Turd: They (2002) A girl is being chased by nightmare creatures

Trailer: https://youtu.be/kgFVnWS0oHI?si=I0FxhksS5mUxbR8R

Julia is a psychology student having the same nightmares and night terrors she had as a kid. She finds out she's being chased by nightmare creatures that lurk in the dark and prey on their victim's deepest fears.

Childhood fears, creepy shadows, creatures that lurk in the darkness of your closet. It sounds scary but it's just boring. Most of the movie is just talking in dimly lit rooms. Julia (Laura Regan) is passive, has an unusually long neck, makes dumb decisions, and she's banging Marc Blucas. With so many fake-out scares that by the time the creatures finally appear at the end you're just ready for the movie to be over.

Although Wes Craven's name is on the title he was just a producer. The Hitcher director Robert Harmon was the one who directed it. Wes Craven's name was just added to give the movie some horror cred.

Explorers (1985) 3 teenage boys build a spaceship to explore outer space

Trailer: https://youtu.be/al75vXD6koc?si=fxyq7jqDB2uHnIZa

A childhood classic now on Tubi. The first 2/3 are pretty good then it kind of goes off the rails in the last 30 minutes. I still love it though.

Ben Crandall is a kid having strange dreams about building a ship and flying through space. Ben and his two friends build a homemade spaceship and launch themselves into space where they discover Earth has been visited by pop culture obsessed aliens.

Starring Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix in their first movie. Directed by Joe Dante as his passion project with special effects done by Industrial Light and Magic Studios. Star Trek Voyager actor Robert Picardo would play the alien Wak and also the alien father.

Executives at Paramount Pictures released the movie during the July summer season instead of late August. This gave Joe Dante and his team no time to edit the movieand finish the story as they intended leaving an underdeveloped plot and a rushed ending.

Hook (1991) A grown up Peter Pan must return to Neverland to save his children from Captain Hook

Trailer: https://youtu.be/c-vwgt8cwEM?si=NbInp9nX9gw7gPCQ

You have to fly.

You have to fight.

You have to crow.

You have to save Maggie. You have to save Jack.

Hook is back.

Robin Williams plays Peter Banning, a workaholic lawyer and father with no memory of being Peter Pan. When Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman) kidnaps his children he is forced to return to Neverland. With the help of Tinkerbell (Julia Roberts) and the Lost Boys they help Peter to rediscover his courage and remind him who he once was.

My favourite Robin Williams movie who was perfectly cast as Peter. Dustin Hoffman steals the movie as Captain Hook and was encouraged by Spielberg to play him as cartoonish and Shakespearean. And Bob Hoskins plays a fantastic Mr. Smee.

An earlier version of Hook was almost a musical starring Michael Jackson. Micheal was a fan of the story and wanted to play Peter and spent years trying to get a movie made. When Steven Spielberg took over he decided to turn it into an adventure movie about a grown-up Peter Pan.

Rufio was played by 15 year old Dante Basco. With his mohawk, fearless attitude, and Bangarang battle cry Rufio would become one of the most iconic fantasy movie characters of the 90s. Years later Dante Basco would become the voice of Prince Zuko in Avater the Last Airbender.

Saturday Morning Cartoon Tubi TV Treasure: Street Sharks (1994-1997) 4 brothers are transformed into half-man half-sharks

Intro: https://youtu.be/vMVMQa39BAU?si=VSYcyo21sRtREllj It's like TMNT but with sharks.

Since Tubi has Street Sharks I hope one day they get Biker Mice from Mars.

Dr. Luther Paradigm (later Piranoid) is a mad geneticist experimenting with technology splicing human DNA (gene slamming because 90s) with animals. 4 extreme sports brothers get involved with the experiments and are transformed into half-man half-sharks hybrids. Instead of becoming monsters they decide to use their new totally jawsome shark powers to fight crime and battle Dr. Paradigm's mutant creations.

Sharks rollerblading and sharks swimming through concrete. Sharks who can't breathe underwater and need scuba gear to swim. Shark jokes. Fish jokes. Crazy looking Mutant henchmen and characters who were made just to sell toys. Street Sharks was probably the most 90s cartoon to come out of the 90s.

Vin Diesel loves Street Sharks: https://youtu.be/1kthtkKM0oQ?si=mqym7FbGhSR9qf\_w
