Carrying the burden in this world is stressful; laying the burden down is bliss.
The Buddha says:
“Carrying the burden in this world is stressful; laying the burden down is bliss.”
What is meant by the burden here?
The burden is the thought:
“This is me. This is mine. This must remain. I must get what I want. I must not lose what I love.”
Instead, it is wiser to remind yourself:
“This body is not permanently mine.”
“These feelings will change.”
“These thoughts are not me.”
“I cannot control everything that happens.”
If you become attached to your beauty or strength, aging becomes a threat to you.
If you become attached to a relationship, losing that person becomes a source of fear.
If you become attached to a particular image of yourself, anything that contradicts it becomes painful.
