Somport Railway tunnel

The Somport Railway Tunnel is a historic railway tunnel linking France and Spain through the Pyrenees. Built in the early 20th century, it was opened in 1928 as part of the Pau–Canfranc railway line, providing a direct rail connection between the two countries. At approximately 7.9 kilometres long, it was one of the longest railway tunnels in Europe at the time. The international railway service was interrupted in 1970 after a train accident destroyed a bridge on the French side. Since then, the tunnel has remained closed to railway traffic, while the Canfranc station on the Spanish side has become an important historical and tourist site.

Is this player cheating on the daily challenge?

I noticed a player who almost always scores 25,000 on the daily challenge. To learn from them, I started watching their replays to understand what clues they use. But every time, they don't move at all, just open the map, click very close to the final location, adjust slightly, and land on the exact spot.

I assume they're cheating somehow, but they're obviously not Googling, and it doesn't look like a script (though I've never seen one in action). Here's the replay. Curious to hear your take.

Also, what's even the point of cheating on the daily challenge? Just to see your name on the leaderboard?

I just reached Master for the first time and I find the locations are really harder. How easy is it for you to guess the country?

It was >!Japan (Ukushima Island)!<, and it blew my mind.

Found myself in a town somewhere in the middle of Canada, when suddenly...

I won the duel on this lucky finding.

I once heard that France has the most roundabouts in the world, so I decided to verify it myself.

I pulled all roundabout locations from the OSM API and built this map.

Turns out it's true. France leads with over 141k roundabouts, which is around 14% of all roundabouts worldwide, followed by Spain with 120k.

Data available here: https://github.com/mickaelmarchese/round-abouts/blob/main/roundabouts.csv

EDIT : I made a mistake while calculating the number of roundabouts. I filtered OSM data on junction = 'roundabout'  but it appears that there are multiple junctions per actual roundabout, so I merged junctions less than 20m appart.

The revised numbers are :

  • FR: 66 616 (12,6%)
  • ES: 51 580 (9,8%)
  • IT: 42 691 (8,1%)
