Served paper for power of attorney
To start, I am a 27 year old man who lives in Iowa and have a wife that stays home with our two daughters. My grandma started developing dementia a couple of years ago. I’d visit her maybe once a month, as I didn’t have a close relationship with her. After we moved cities from our hometown, I found out I was power of attorney of my grandma, who has no relationship with her only son (my dad), and is divorced but who has been living with her long time boyfriend of 7-10 years and who are both retired, owned a house together and split everything financially. Unbeknownst to me, my power of attorney was relinquished to the boyfriend after we moved.
Later that year, we had moved back home for the unplanned birth of our second daughter. My grandmothers health had deteriorated severely to almost 24 care. The boyfriend was also facing some medical issues related to smoking and back problems. He asked me if I would resume power of attorney. I declined because I do not have the time or financials to take care of her. Apparently the boyfriend relinquished his power of attorney role. They had designated me as secondary power of attorney. I declined again. I tried contacting their lawyer to see if there was anything I needed to sign to make it official, no response. The boyfriend sold the house they owned together, and bought a new house worth a quarter of what their house was worth, but only after taking her name off of the deed, and then dumped her at the hospital, where she currently is residing. A deputy showed up at my house this morning to serve me papers, the boyfriend is taking me to court to determine who will be in charge of her care. Court date is set for July 13th.
Obviously I’ll be contacting a lawyer, but any advice, opinions and suggestions would be appreciated on how to handle this
