Guppy strains that are often mislabeled as endlers

One thing that’s been a reoccurring issue in the hobby is when people often times mislabels guppy strains as endler strains. Okay when obtaining guppy strains that are labeled as endlers good chance they are pure reticulata or have a reticulata origin due to hybridization, and you can’t tell without genetically testing or asking the creator of the strains for a pedigree \*which is impossible lol\*. The reason for this misidentification is usually due to the size and phenotypes of certain strains being “endler like”, commercial fisheries/breeders labeling them as endlers to sell for a higher profit, and/or people generally aren’t knowledgeable enough to know the difference between reticulata and wingei. I can’t speak for a lot of strains of guppies in the hobby and in the wild, but here’s a few examples that comes to mind that majority of the time gets commercially labeled as endlers.

\- Japan blue guppy: this is a hit or miss but Japan Blue originally came from feral fancy guppies living in the river systems in a certain area of Japan in the early 1990’s. Idk the original person who caught the founding specimens but as been told they are purely reticulata. Originally the Japan blue (JB) trait is a Y-linked trait that express on the back half of the guppies body with a blue iridescent sheen, same zone as halfblack/tuxedo (nigrocaudus) gene. As of late breeders manage to make that trait cross over to the X chromosome making it possible for females to pass the JB trait and males passing it on both sex chromosomes. Also breeders used male Japan blue guppies to hybridize with pure wingei females to make smaller more compact Japan blue endlerguppy strains, which they fall under K-Class category. Japan blue was never a wingei trait it was a reticulata trait bred into a hybrid that’s been breed to pure wingei over time.

\- Ginga rubra guppy: this here is a classic guppy strain created by master breeder Kenjiro Tanaka (also known for Tanaka’s candlelight guppy and plus more). The origin of this strain is pretty simple he wanted a more nice small robust short tailed guppy strain so he used feral guppies and crossed them to blonde type fancy guppies I assumed females, which over time he selected for the blotching markings with the blonde base of that strain. They have been commercially labeled as endlers to make a profit unfortunately people seem to forgot such a classic strain of guppy basically passing around a guppy as an endler. Ginga means galaxy due to how iridescent the strain is and rubra means red for the red blotches seen on the males.

\- Vienna Emerald guppy: this is alsoooo another classic strain of guppies someone are confused for endlers. They were created in European in early to mid 1900’s if I can recall. Breeders selected the strain for a primitive wildtype appearance which were based off Ojvind Winge paper on guppy genetics. This strain idk in-depth on gene traits off the top of my head so I had to look up the exact name for the gene which is called “smaragd iridenscens” which is supposedly a Y-linked trait paired with the swordtail types which is also Y-linked passed from father to son. From what I can find. They express those nice green zebrinus bars. I assume based off their phenotype they are mistaken for endlers or endlerguppy hybrids.

\- Any feral/wildtype guppy: guppies are basically everywhere in the world except Antarctica. Guppies were used as mosquito vector control not endlers. They’ve been around possibly before endlers were getting popular in the hobby depended on the region. When people go out to collect these feral guppies, people would think they are endlers mainly because they express primitive phenotypes. Individuals vary Poecilia reticulata is a highly polymorphic species even more diverse than endlers genetically, and phenotypically.

How on earth do I have guppy fry, and why is there only two of them?

So yeah title should give you the jist of it - I cycled my tank about 6 weeks ago, 2 weeks ago I picked up 3 guppies, 1M 2F, along with about 5 cherry shrimp. Then a week later I went back and got another 3 guppies (again, 1M 2F) and another 5 cherry shrimp.

Fast forward to literally 5 min ago, I walk in the door from work and go to check on my tank and fed my fish when I saw a piece of food moving around oddly in the water column so I squint to get a bet-OH MY GOD THEY'RE BABIES!?!

So I'll also add, I have kept and even bred (intentionally) guppies, I've seen them give birth literally hundreds of times, though never quite like this. Namely, because there only appears to be 2 fry, and ALL of the females are still plump and clearly pregnant. What on earth could this be?? None of the females are behaving like they're in labor, all the tank inhabitants are just chilling out.

Could these possibly be premature? Can fish even do that?? It's been so long since I've dealt with guppy fry, I tried to include a pic but it looks like they both may have a tiny bit of yolk left, but I remember it being usually much more pronounced. I find it hard to believe she could have given birth already and maybe shes just a fat fish - I spend (no exaggeration) hours in front of this tank every single day, there's no way a fish could've given birth to all those fry and then had them all eaten except 2 this quickly.

But yeah I'm at a total loss here yall! I'm really hoping it's maybe just a quirky female; gonna go run a few miles, when I'm back hopefully I'll have an update w more babies, but after watching this tank THOROUGHLY for the last 30 min, I'm not seeing anything at all to suggest she's going to have more fry, they all just still look pregnant.

Also, HOW DO THEY GIVE BIRTH ITS ONLY BEEN 2 WEEKS MAX, THE FEMALE I SUSPECT IS THE PARENT, I'VE HAD FOR LESS THAN A WEEK! I know the obvious answer is she came pregnant from the store, but they allegedly kept the males and females separated and its a GREAT lfs, maybe there was a male cosplaying in the ladies tank? (If so, great work little dude, your gene pool lives on)

What is happening to the tail of my guppies? Two died today and their tails were missing.

Recently did a water change. Ammonia, nitrate and nitrite are all 0 ppm and ph is 7.5.

Sorry ik these questions suck but im new to keeping females

If its annoying feel free to not answer lol, but I didn't plan on keeping females. I live with my mom and she decided to pick out some new guppies without letting me know, and unknowingly got two females. She put them in my bachelor tank, and luckily they're leaving the 2 females alone, and theres plenty of plants to break up sight lines, but was wondering how far into gestation she might be?

Anyone know the name of this variety?

Anyone know what kind of guppies they are? I like that the females are also colorful. Hard to get pics of the males. They move so fast! I was given 3 males and 8 females in a 16gal bioOrb. Currently cycling a 40gal breeder tank for them, but it’s ready yet. Although they’re mostly blue, I can also see purple, especially in sunlight. Thanks in advance for your help.

Going to try a cross breeding experiment with a cull Japan blue female and a blue dragon mosaic male

I have one young male mosaic guppies with 2 of the female cull japan blue yellows.

I have looked to deeply into the genetics of both yet but I’m interested to see what they produce.

One of the female dropped 3 fry with the normal yellow color, for the Japan blue gold, so I think she may have came pregnant from my main tank.

The pictures are about a month old and the mosaics are much more colored up.

I just got them 2 days ago and the female keeps driving the male away

I noticed that the male keeps hiding in plants near the surface to get away from the female 🥲 she doesn't constantly chase him though, only when he gets too close. Should I be worried? Her eyes keep turning black

Orangeline endlerguppy hybrids

Not sure how I feel about these orangeline endler guppies im thinking they are f2’s by sibling cross or f1 male x (Bluestar x Silverado) female. Still possibly another set of F1’s. They aren’t bad looking, it’s just they aren’t as stretched out as the other f1’s and their spot is smaller, more concentrated and their orangeline line is more elongated spots. Theres two males in the pics, one has a bottom sword (Pics 1&3) and the other (Pics 2&4) doesn’t I’ll assume atm. If they are f2 good chance the father is the f1 that also has a bottom tail streak Then again they aren’t fully mature so imma see this through.

Is my guppy actually a proper guppy?

Hello humans, this is my chud son Pebble, I love him a lot.

He was sold as a "neon guppy" at a store, but lately I've been noticing that he's a good bit smaller than my other male guppies and a lot slimmer.

Then I found out today that Endlers and Guppies are two different things and looked at comparisons between Guppies and Endlers.

I now also know they can breed and produce hybrid offspring, so it got me wondering if Pebble might be either of that?

I'm sorry if this is a silly question!

What do you think?

So i have a 20gal long with male guppies which have been together for quite some time now, they chase eachother but have never nipped or been aggressive, and about 4 months ago i got a couple bumblebee gobies ( they were house in with the guppies at the pet store so assumed they were ok with them) and they stayed on bottom mainly and never bothered or chased the guppies, well I have noticed recently that one of the gobies now swims up by the guppies during feeding and chases them which I do feed them on different sides of the tank, have plants and bottom is also grass type plants and driftwood, but i have recently just noticed one of my guppies has half its back tail missing, well I thought it was from the incident of my light falling into the water while it was turned off when I was gone for weekend camping, (lost couple guppies due to it) but now i just noticed this guy in the video that has the whole top dorsal fin completely ripped off and he wasnt like that yesterday....is it more than likely the gobie?? And I do have a glo light tetra seen in the video, ember tetra and a neon that have never paid no mind to the guppies and they have been in there for over a year now, (their buddies died a while back and I decided I was just going to have guppies once the last few tetras end up dying) just looking for some advice, I will remove the gobies if its believed they could be the culprits!

Need urgent help — sudden fish deaths

On 17 May night, before leaving for a trip, I did a proper partial water change with dechlorinated water and the tank was completely fine.

I was away from 17–20 May and had asked someone at home to feed the fish. Due to miscommunication, the fish were apparently overfed heavily during just 1-2 days while I was away. At the same time, the oxygen/airstone pipe had also stopped working/broken, which I only discovered after returning home tonight (20 May).

Tank is around 30 litres.

When I came home today, I found:
- 8+ dead fish already,
- metallic/foul smelling water,
- stressed fish,
- and visible leftover waste.

I immediately:
- removed dead fish,
- fixed the oxygen stone/aeration,
- removed around 3-4 litres of water,
- slowly added bottled water because I had no conditioned water available immediately,
- removed a plant that may have been rotting,
- and stopped feeding completely.

Some fish are still alive and swimming, but stressed.

Does this sound like an ammonia spike + oxygen crash caused by overfeeding? What should I do over the next 24 hours to save the remaining fish?

Should I continue small gradual water changes tonight itself, or wait till morning and do a bigger conditioned water change?

Any urgent advice would really help. I’m honestly devastated because I cancelled my birthday trip and came back home immediately after finding out what happened.

Is this sickness or just stress?

I got two endlers from a LFS yesterday and one of them is acting strange. When I introduced them, he immediately swam to the bottom of the tank and was lying underneath a plant on the substrate. He stayed like that for a few hours and then I couldn’t find him. Today he was at the surface of the tank all day staying in the same general location for most of the day. I saw him come out a few times to swim up to my other guppies/endlers, but he was nowhere near as active as them and it almost seemed like he was sinking if he stopped swimming. after a few seconds he would go right back to the surface. The other endler I got with him came from the same tank and seems very active and healthy and socializes with my other fish all day.

He looks okay physically (he had some clamped fins yesterday but they aren’t anymore) but none of my guppies or endlers have acted this way before so I’m wondering if there’s something wrong with him? I drip acclimated them and my tank parameters are pH: 7.4, ammonia: 0 ppm, nitrite: 0 ppm, nitrate: 0-0.5 ppm.

(sorry the pic is not good lol, just trying to show what he’s been doing all day)

Are those hit guts? :( it’s way larger than poops, different colour to any of the 3 colours the poops in my tank are :( he’s also been like it for about 11 hours
