Why is VinFast in India ?

VinFast keeps presenting itself as a top player in India, but the actual picture looks different.

From what I’m seeing, VinFast is around #13 in India, while their social media communication often makes them look like #4. Also, a large share of their sales seems to be linked to their own taxi/fleet business. For example, in May, they sold around 1,200 units, roughly 850 were Limo Green, which they sold to themselves for taxi/fleet business

So the question is: why is VinFast really in India?

Right now, they don’t seem clearly ahead on:
Cost, Technology, Service network , Brand trust

India already has strong EV players like Tata, Mahindra, MG, BYD, Hyundai, Kia, Ola, Ather and others. Unless VinFast brings real cost advantage, better technology, or strong after-sales support, it is hard to see why Indian customers would choose them.

Maybe their real goal is not retail dominance, but fleet sales, Indian government and tax payers local manufacturing benefits to build vehicle soon outbound to other countries as India tax payers are giving almost nil land cost , electricity water benefits

VinFast Green SM Taxi Service Faces Driver Complaints Within Days Of Launch

Bubble burst too early? Early driver complaints are already raising questions about VinFast EVs, Green SM’s execution, and long-term sustainability in India. India is not Vietnam — customers and drivers won’t accept hype without delivery.

After this incident EVs are dead to me

This happened in Hyderabad today vinfast have delivered a car which stopped within 1km after taking the delivery and dealership didn't take responsibility to fix the issue. This is the pathetic situation of EV dealerships across India. They don't upskill or improve user experience. Leave about educating customers. Everyday seeing issues with EV dealerships.

Imported/assembled EV taxis may hurt local OEMs and cab drivers

Vinfast is entering India with EV taxis, but the key question is: how much of this is actually made in India?

If the vehicle is only imported or assembled in India with very low local content, then it is not real “Make in India.” It may create some assembly jobs, but the main technology, components, and value addition remain outside India.

My concern is also for cab drivers. Many drivers take vehicles on loan and depend on daily earnings to pay EMI, fuel cost, maintenance, and family expenses. If large fleet operators enter with subsidized imported/assembled vehicles, individual cab drivers may face lower earnings, higher competition, and more pressure on loan repayment.

India should welcome foreign companies, but with clear rules:

Local content should be mandatory.

Indian suppliers and OEMs should get fair opportunity.

Driver income protection should be considered.

Fleet operators should not create unfair competition for small cab owners.

Green mobility is good, but it should not come at the cost of Indian manufacturing and the livelihood of cab drivers.
