We're building a new datalogger, now's your chance to say what you hate about the current ones

I wasn't going to post anything until I had the protoboards next month... But fuck it, the only thing holding me back now is delivery of the boards and FCC testing

I need to pull the trigger on the final board design today to stay on schedule for q1 2027 and I'm not sure about the LEDs

Now's your chance to say something.... Anything...

How many LEDs are too many? I've already done some real world testing with the smaller LEDs and they are more than easy enough to see on a bright summer day in florida, while being more energy efficient than the larger ones used in some of the loggers today

After a bunch of playing around.... I really like this setup I've come up with using the side LEDs as the status indicators

Diy version available here: (tachometer, but no temps, much smaller screen) https://github.com/TheAngryRaven/DovesDataLogger

Almost 3 years in development by a 20+ year veteran in software, this isn't a "vibecoded" project. Its been tested ontrack, for a few hundred hours, by about 10 different people, and a small race organization in Switzerland. 90% + test coverage and blah blah blah

4in screen, 25hz GPS, 50hz tachometer, all the usual stuff

Price? TBD : a LOT more affordable than current offerings, I need the final board in my hand before declaring a price

Current estimated battery life: 40 hours

I made a capacitive tachometer circut, for magneto/points style ignition

I don't know shit about electrical engineering but I thought "hey how hard could it be to make a kart datalogger"

The answer is not very, but the tachometer is a bitch.

with enough research of my own, I managed to come up with something, found some Amazon tachometers for small motors that worked in a similar fashion, reverse engineered those

Finally had something that mostly worked, and honestly just paid an RF engineer to clean up all of the noise and make it better, and make sure it should handle 15,000 rpm on a single cylinder 2 stroke.

"That's not a car"

This works for any ignition system that uses a magneto/points system, bike stock car, legends car, etc

You wrap a wire around a spark plug lead a few times, and then simply place the other end of the wire near the pickup, no soldering, and a burnt lead doesn't ruin your day

https://github.com/TheAngryRaven/DovesDataLogger/blob/master/TACHOMETER/paid_schematic_1.PDF

If making your own board, the nastier your ignition source, the smaller you should make the antenna

Go out there, make shit, piss off the assholes charging too much for everything

DIY datalogger can now sync to insta360, including GPS

I promised not to post again until there was a big update, and well boys and girls there's been a few big updates.

I've just released v2 of the DIY datalogger files. Much easier to assemble, no more heat-serts, or weird pins for swinging doors. Soldered on memory module, a better battery charger, and 9mm thinner!!

And no code required to setup, just copy s file other, and then wireless updates after that.

Now just glue and add a couple screws, no electronics are permanently bound to the enclosures.

Datalogger

  • auto wake + track + course detection
  • 25hz GPS
  • engine RPM
  • insta360 sync to wake / record / sync GPS
  • CAMERA AUTOMATICALLY STARTS RECORDING WHEN ENGINE STARTS
  • experimental Bluetooth thermocouple
  • now has the ability to self charge it's massive battery

"That GPS looks different..." It is! I'm now using the bare $15 module instead of the $80 matek carrier board (used to be $20) But there is a file to still use the old matek GPS!! No need to buy another! you could also be lazy and upgrade to the soldered memory by gluing it to the top of the battery bay, there is plenty of room for the old enclosure to still close.

Web app

  • now easier to manage setups and see fastest laps
  • download logs from DIY logger + OTA updates
  • now supports mychron binaries and alfano zips (I have a prototype native app but it's not ready yet)
  • lap by lap data / video comparison split view
  • video overlays + export (very slow)
  • overlay lap data from any other session, mix mychron and iRacing data!!!
  • can now open chunked GoPro videos, just select all of them
  • leaderboards
  • ability to share sessions via URL (account required)
  • experimental "camber 2 pill posistion" calculator
  • firmware simulator so you can see how my datalogger works!
  • a couple dozen little quality of life updates reccomended last time
  • lots of UI enhancements

Coming soon: native app: (features not possible on web)

  • direct connection to insta360 cameras and the ability to process and overlay data on 360 videos
  • direct connection to mychron + alfano
  • hardware accelerated video overlays + export

And as always: NO ACCOUNT REQUIRED

An account is only required for select cloud features, otherwise all data stays in your device.

I currently have 20 tachometers ready to be shipped, I'm also trying to gather the parts so that I can sell ready to assemble kits (legally I cannot assemble and sell them), so that people don't need to buy bundles of parts to assemble one, but I dunno I think it's easier now

If you would like one contact me e

Now tell me why it sucks and you hate it

"What about my car??" Don't use the bolts, and smack a quadlock VHB sticker to the back 👍

PS: yes commercialization is in the works

Free DIY Laptimer/Datalogger + dataviewer

Alright race fans, it's time I think that I post here, just finished a couple of updates I think people will love. This first post will be a lot, please forgive me

What the fuck is this? An extremely competitive DIY open source laptimer/datalogger developed by a professional SWE

This has been a passion project of mine for the last 3 years due to the never ending rising costs of mychron and etc

I just finished making it soooo much easier to assemble, also just finished filming a build video, and it's time to start cooking. You don't even need to download code!! Just know how to solder and copy a file over.

Datalogger Features: 25hz GPS within 0.001s of commercial loggers 15+ hour battery life Engine tachometer (spark plug based) Insta360 support, automatically start your camera, start recording, and sync GPS data to the camera at 10hz

Automatic track and course detection

On device speed/current/best/pace/optimal/rpm (karting)

FREE NO ACCOUNT app used to download logs, view data, and create video overlays (cloud saves OPTIONAL) https://lapwingdata.com/

Now this was originally developed for karting, it's missing a couple features for cars, mainly the fact this is currently only for circuits.

Not currently compatible with sprints/drag/rally (I am one dude doing all of this, cut me some slack)

Just let me know what sucks about it and what features you want

Commercial laptimer coming soon starting at $2**.00

WEB SIMULATOR FOR DATALOGGER https://lapwingdata.com/simulator Check out how the firmware works and tell me why it sucks

Difference between karts and cars: Engine RPM will boot device, then start recording Car drivers will need to press 1(one) button to wake device, and then "just drive"

Webapp features: Yes

Download logs from DIY logger, update settings/track list, OTA updates

Setup and log vehicle setup information 100% customizable setup form templates

Historic weather information

Overlap laps from other sessions, or other log types, overlay mychron, alfano data, and a quick toggle for the selected courses "fastest laps"

Video, and GoPro video support (no 360 video yet, was just given SDK access), video overlaps.

Split video between two laps, see each lap compared frame by frame

Leaderboards, public profiles

I'll try to keep this page constantly updated with news https://lapwingdata.com/updates

Native app coming soon that will enable mychron/alfano downloads as well as hardware video encoding

I am here to eat the vibecoders

I feel a little responsible for the app slop, my repo has 11k clones... Let me explain the situation

Edit: so I wasn't quick (not news)

Ps: I won't make another thread until I can preview the commercial device, I aint here to spam shit neither

Anyway, so I understand this is a lot of my ego talking... Yea mock me for cringe. I'm going on year 3 of this project I think I'm allowed a little cringe

I just didn't realize the codebase had had been cloned by thousands of people (1200 in just the last 2 weeks).... And now I do kind of feel responsible for all the slop apps coming out, people are bashing on AI trying to figure out some way to fleece more money out of people

I want to be clear https://HackTheTrack.net isn't slop, I'm just an idiot and built this for me, now I don't know what additional features people actually want, and what coaches actually want, because I could never afford a coach, so tell me why my shit sucks

I've seen two fucking apps now that want $5/month to even open the app, I started this because I found a website to save setups that wanted $3/month and thought it was bullshit

And It is bullshit, and you shouldn't stand for it

I will build exactly what the people want (or you can build it and submit a pull request)

The goal is dropping dropping prices of this damn sport, this is just the first phase.

Just post what you actually want in a track side app, and I'll add it to the backlog. I'm here to make shit.

We can do whatever we want

Building Open Source Racing Analytics

Spent the last few months of my free time working on this, essentially a version of race studio that works on mobile/tablet/desktop

Now supports AiM (xrk), iRacing (ibt), and RaceBox (vbo) files

a webapp designed around an offline-first philosophy, works 100% offline.

Supports video overlays (not chunked videos yet)

Historical weather

Saving chassis setups in a way that locks a version to a session so changing the setup won't mess with historical data

overlay data from any session onto the current session

And so much more

And includes a FOSS datalogger as well

Nothing gated behind a paywall except you dumping logs on my server, unlimited local storage

Before I overhaul this horrible UI, I was probably going to add a "fastest lap" social section where people would upload their fastest laps, and users can reference that data.

If anyone here races (shocking amount of devs at the track) just list whatever features you think the popular software is missing, and give me a couple days lol

I need help with track data for my new (free) webapp

first off, it's FREE AND OPEN SOURCE built because I'm building a MyChron competitor for $350 (~6 months away)

I posted bits months back, but I'm officially calling this an official 1.0 release

So, very long story short, I'm sick and tired of racing data being expensive, I didn't want to pay for a mychron, so I built my own... and then built an app to go with it... And it only took me like 2 and a half years

Right now it only works with mychron/alfano if you save a CSV. I'm working on building native converters but that will take a bit more time.

Or rentals can 3d print their own datalogger for $100ish, depending on where you source the GPS it can be even cheaper

It works entirely offline once the app is loaded once, can do video overlays (this is new and a little buggy, but it works lol)

And then I added a million features to it, now I want everyone to use it, but I don't have but one track currently lmao so I need help adding tracks, courses, and drawings (no login or account required), you just need to make sure to click the "upload to DB" button when you're done setting up a track, click into the sample data to get the full UI

I've recently been digging into a bunch of old skip-barber research and tried to build a bit of a mathmatical driving coach, still needs some work but I think it shows promise.

The coolest feature in my opinion is managing the setups, I built it so they would "never change".

If you save a kart+setup to a session, and then later change the setup, the historical data is NEVER changed

And when you make a new setup, it will pre-populate with the last saved setup to save time punching in data.

It will also save fastest laps per course, per engine

Oh and it seems to have no problem with iracing data either, nothing stopping you from using this for car racing, just make a new vehicle class for the setup menu!
