Non toxic mugs

Hi, I’m looking into non toxic mugs for herbal teas and I’m wondering what material is best? I know some ceramics have a toxic glaze that contains lead and cadmium so I’m kinda stuck on what I should use? I’m thinking glass? Is there any specific type I should get or any better options? Thanks :)

Is a “no candles or incense” rule common in UK rentals?

Hi everyone,
My boyfriend and I are about to move into our first rented home, so we’re completely new to renting.
We’re very lucky that the landlord is a relative of my boyfriend’s family, so the house never went on the market and we’ve been offered it directly. Everything will still be done properly with a tenancy agreement, deposit protection, etc., but because we know them they’ve been talking us through everything before we move in.
One thing they mentioned is that they don’t want us using candles or incense inside the house. They explained they’ve had previous tenants accidentally damage carpets with wax or nearly start fires by leaving candles unattended, which is completely understandable.
The reason I’m asking is because candle making is something I do as a hobby and I’m hoping to eventually turn it into a small business and source of income. At the moment I mainly make candles for myself while I’m learning, but it’s something I’d like to grow in the future. I haven’t mentioned this to the landlord yet because we were just so grateful to be offered the house after looking for so long, but I do plan to have an open conversation with them about it before it becomes anything more than a hobby.
I was just wondering whether a “no candles or incense” rule is common in UK rentals. Is it something that’s often written into tenancy agreements, or is it usually more of a request from the landlord? Thanks :)

First time renters- budgeting advice needed.

Hi everyone,
My boyfriend and I are about to move into our first rented home, and I’m trying to get our finances organised before we move in.
I’m someone who likes everything to be very organised, and I can be quite obsessive about budgeting. I’ve worked out roughly how much all of our regular expenses are going to cost, even down to things like toiletries, because we’re planning to buy 5-litre refill packs where possible and I wanted to know the monthly cost over time.
Our plan is to open a joint Monzo account and have lots of different pots for different categories, such as food, heating oil, car insurance, fuel, vitamins and supplements, beauty, household items, and anything else we know we’ll need. Each month we’d pay a set amount into each pot, then when we need to buy something we’d pay for it from that specific pot. My thinking is that it should mean the money is already there when those bigger or less frequent expenses come up.
Does this sound like a sensible system, or am I massively overcomplicating it? Is there a better way that people budget for both monthly bills and irregular expenses?
I think one of my biggest worries is having an unexpected expense or getting to the point where we need to buy something essential and realising we haven’t set enough money aside. I’d love to know how other people organise their money, especially if you’ve just moved out for the first time.
Any advice would be really appreciated!

First time renting…any tips?

Hi, me and my boyfriend are moving into our first rented home in the next month or so. We’ve never rented before, so it’s all a bit overwhelming and we’re trying to make sure we don’t miss anything.
We’re looking for advice on what we should be doing before we move in, and also what we should do as soon as we’ve got the keys. Things like setting up the water, electricity, broadband, council tax, taking meter readings, or anything else that first-time renters often don’t realise they need to do.
We’re also planning to open a joint Monzo account so we can both pay money into it each month. We want to use Monzo’s savings pots to put money aside for things like heating oil (the house uses oil instead of gas, and we’ve been told you usually have to buy around 500l at a time), car insurance, and other household expenses. If anyone has any advice on budgeting this way or living in an oil-heated house, we’d really appreciate it.
It’s all a bit confusing at the moment, so we’d love to hear any tips, advice, or things you wish you’d known before moving into your first rented home.
Thank you!
