‘Yamaha’ 15hp outboard lower unit from AliExpress… how bad are they?

Yes yes I’m hanging my head with shame.

But.. bought a second hand 15hp 2 stroke Yamaha (15FMH) outboard and the lower unit has not been loved and is really in a sorry state all round.

Whilst I’m adding up all the parts and time I’m going to have to spend getting it back up to condition, I had a little browse on AliExpress. I can pick up an entire lower unit for really not a lot.

I get they’re not OEM quality but this motor will be used infrequently and very much looked after between uses. Has anyone had any experience buying complete lower units from Ali? How bad are they? I wouldn’t even mind pulling out the whole prop unit from the current one and slotting it into the new one if it’s the gearbox/bearings that are the weak point.

Experienced views welcome. Yes I know you get what you pay for but I’d like some real life pointers on what I’m likely to receive. Thanks in advance 🙂

Assos bib shorts - Bad padding design?

I’ll caveat this with - it obviously must work for most / a lot of people… but…

Dropped £215 (full retail price) on some Assos Mille GTS S11 bib shorts. Went on a 100+ mile ride, super excited for what I expected to be many hours of my ass feeling like it’s barely touching the saddle and finishing not even realising I’d been sat down.

What actually happened, was after about 50 miles, those two very thick pads you can see (picture is the inside of the padding) start to separate apart a bit more under pressure because, well they’re not connected. So what happens? Your perineum has no padding and you get the familiar aching/pain/numbness down there from the pressure. It’s probably made worse because they’re so thick so separate more/easier if that makes sense.

You could blame seat position - I’m not tucked in riding aero or on the drops for that distance - but these are billed as endurance shorts not race shorts.

Pretty annoyed I’ve dropped that much on shorts and left feeling overall extremely underwhelmed (and slightly numb).

Assos bib shorts are generally raved about - are the other models better/different? Or have I just got a weird shaped ass and the issue here is not the shorts…

EDIT - Just checked my current shorts in more detail and the ‘gap’ between the pads is normal - the issue is the pads on these are so thick and rather than tapering off on the edges just have a cliff edge. Which I think creates/focuses the pressure

Hi all, first post! Changed the pads on my 105 calipers and noticed the pistons were sticking and not fully retracting or retracting unevenly. Pushed them out as much as possible and gave them a good clean but it’s very difficult to properly clean them all round in situ. That being said, they seem to be working fine now so I guess I just about cleaned them enough.

I’m going to replace the fluid anyway, and have the Shimano kit and mineral oil. Can I (or should I given they are working?) pop the pistons out so I can give them a good proper clean? Is it more trouble than it’s worth? Is there a guide anywhere, guessing these aren’t technically service items as Shimano only instructs cleaning the pistons in place not removal or refitting.

Thanks in advance
