Crazy how much luck in categories affects the results!

As a Jeopardy superfan who's been watching since I was a kid, I've recently started taking the idea of becoming a contestant very seriously and prepping at home to see my chances. For the past few days, I've been tracking how well I've been doing in depending on the day to see which categories I'm very weak in and also how many questions as a whole I'm getting right each day.

The results were super shocking to me because I thought that I'd have sort of a baseline average across the days, but the amount that I got correct varied wildly from day to day. For example, on the first day that I tracked my scores, I got 11/25 in SJ and 15/25 in DJ, but the next day, I literally got 9/25 in SJ and 6/25 in DJ. Funnily enough, I almost never get Final on a daily basis, but I got it correct on all three days that I tracked (India, Jaws, and the Cuban Missile Crisis, all of which seemed oddly simple for FJ).

It makes me think that to win Jeopardy, you either have to be a supergenius like Caleb, Ken, and Jamie and just know everything, or you have to get extraordinarily lucky with the categories, especially in DJ. For example, as a huge Classical Mythology nerd, I was able to sweep The Odyssey category, but didn't get a single clue from the category 5 Sixths.

What do you guys think? I'd especially love to hear from prior contestants about what your experiences were with this phenomenon, and if you think it's preferable to be a sort of "jack of all trades," or if knowing a lot of niche specific stuff will eventually come in handy.

AITAH for walking around in my own kitchen at night?

Hi guys,

I’ve been looking for some outside perspective on this situation because I can’t tell if I’m genuinely being disrespectful or if this situation is as annoying as I think it is.

So my mom has this coworker from her old job that she kept in touch with after she retired, let’s call him Joey. Joey and my mom are pretty good friends, and one day while he was over at our house he started talking about how he wished he stayed closer to the city (where we live) so it would be easier to go up the mountains on the weekends with his dog.

My mom has been looking to rent out our basement space for a while now, but it was mainly going to be for college kids or other people who needed a separate apartment, not for Joey. But, hearing his predicament, she offered that he and his dog could stay in our basement every MTW and Th until he left for the mountains on the weekend.

Normally this living situation is fine, but right now my parents are gone on a trip, which leaves taking care of everything around the house to me. This includes taking care of our dog and cat, both of whom are very sick and take multiple medicines at specific times every day. Every day I get up, go to work, go to the gym, run errands, and then don’t make it home until dinner time, where I cook and then clean up the house.

After that I have to do all of the chores that are normally split up across my family, like watering the plants, taking out the garbage, walking the dog, etc. This means that I’m often feeding my dog (who has to eat at very specific times) and giving her medicine at around 9:30 pm, then taking her outside afterwards. Then I give my cat his three medicines, which is very hard to do alone because my dog starts running around and freaking out, which I just can’t really fix because there’s no one else around to hold her, and I can’t leave her outside alone or else she’ll bark.

All of this means that I’m having to walk around my kitchen and ground floor at 10, sometimes 11 pm. This would normally be fine but Joey insists on going to bed at around 7:30 pm because he wakes up at 5am to go somewhere every day (I have no idea where, it’s not work because he’s retired too). I physically cannot be quiet by 7:30 because I barely even get home to eat by then, which means that I pretty much have to walk around at 10-11ish.

Joey is really frustrating me because I’m trying to be as quiet as possible, not stomping or yelling or anything, but he keeps making passive aggressive comments to me without saying what he actually means. One day he yelled up the stairs, “I’m just letting you know we’re down here!” as if to tell me to be quiet without really saying it, and just now he texted me that “[His dog’s name] keeps barking as ur walking around upstairs. Just so u know it’s kind of loud two nights in a row.”

Nowhere in there did he ask me to be quieter politely, but just told me that it’s loud because his dog is barking and just expected me to get the message. I think it’s really unfair to expect that I don’t walk around my own ground floor at night, especially when I have to do all this extra stuff to keep the house nice while my parents are gone.

I’ve never liked Joey as I think he’s kind of a creep (I just turned 21 and he keeps on making jokes about taking me to the bar with him, etc.), but now I think he’s just being unreasonable. But do you guys think I’m being petty and should just try to be quieter and make time for my pets earlier, or am I justified in thinking he’s being immature and unfair? Thanks for reading.

Edit: Some people were asking if he pays to stay. I thought that he didn't, actually, but just asked my mom to make sure. She said he pays $600 per month, as opposed to the upwards of at least $1600 dollars it normally would cost to rent a place like ours in the city. I don't know if this changes people's perspectives, I just wanted to make sure I was being fair in my description of the situation.

Made spicy sriracha tofu!!

  • 14 oz. extra firm tofu

  • 2 Tbsp sriracha

  • 2 tsp soy sauce, divided

  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper

  • 2 Tbsp cooking oil

  • 1 Tbsp cornstarch

  • 2 green onions, sliced

  • Press the tofu for 30 minutes to remove the excess moisture. You can do this by either using a tofu press, or placing the block of tofu on a rimmed plate or tray, then topping with something flat like a cutting board and placing a heavy object on top (cast iron skillet or pot of water). After pressing for 30 minutes, pour off the extra liquid.

  • While the tofu is pressing, make the sriracha sauce. In a small bowl, combine the sriracha, 1 teaspoon soy sauce, and the crushed red pepper. Set the sauce aside.

  • Cut the pressed tofu into ½-inch cubes. Use a paper towel to lightly pat dry the tofu cubes.

  • Add the cooking oil and 1 teaspoon soy sauce to a large bowl. Lightly whisk the soy sauce into the oil. Add the cubed tofu and gently stir until the tofu is coated in oil and soy sauce.

  • Sprinkle 1 teaspoon cornstarch over the cubed tofu and gently stir. Repeat two more times, or until 3 teaspoon (1 Tablespoon) cornstarch has been added to the tofu.

  • Heat a non-stick skillet over medium. When the skillet is hot, add the prepared tofu. The tofu will fry in the oil that is coating the cubes. Cook the tofu, stirring only occasionally, until it is brown and crispy on all sides (about 10 minutes).

  • Pour the sriracha sauce over the tofu and continue to stir and cook for 1-2 more minutes, or until the glaze is thick and sticky.

  • Top the sriracha tofu with sliced green onions and serve.

I, a 21 year old woman, always have a bad aroma no matter how much deodorant I use. Please help?

Hi all,

As the title says, I am a 21-year-old woman that tries to take care of herself and smell good, but I always end up smelling pretty bad around the midday mark. I wear lots of deodorant and even put a spray-on anti perspirant over the deodorant at the beginning of the day, but I somehow smell bad after only an hour or so. Do you guys have any tips and tricks to avoid this? Should I be changing my shower routine and/or doing different stuff in the shower? Sometimes it's so bad that I will shower and clean my armpits thoroughly but they end up smelling bad after like 5 minutes post-shower. Why is this happening? What should I do?

Any advice is well appreciated. Thank you so much.
