[24] [M4F] Germany → Canada – Looking for someone with the same plan (or already there)
Howdy,
I'm emigrating to Canada next year, and I'm looking for a woman who's either doing the same, working toward it, or already made the move.
Just to talk about it, share experiences, maybe figure things out together. And if something more comes out of it, that'd be great too.
I'm a trained IT specialist from southern Germany. I'd describe myself as calm, independent, and self-sufficient, but I like having someone to share the ride with. Hands-on and practical, more comfortable doing than discussing, and at my best outdoors or building something. Space, good food, and good people are what make me happy (most of why Canada's pulling me over).
If you're deep in the visa rabbit hole at 1am, have already picked out your province, or are out there living it, I'd love to hear from you.
German IT guy with IEC WHV – WHV → AAIP path realistic?
I'm German, trained as an IT specialist in software development (equivalent to a vocational IT diploma) with a total of 7 yoe. I'm in my mid-twenties, currently based in Germany, and hold an IEC Working Holiday Visa valid to activate until June 2027.
My CRS score without a provincial nomination sits around 310–320, so well below current federal Express Entry cut-offs, primarily because my French is very limited.
I just came back from roughly two months in Canada, Québec and then Alberta. I had been thinking about it for years before that. When I was there, I was certain that it wasn't just a “honeymoon” phase, but that I really wanted to live there.
What it comes down to for me is the way of life really. The promise of North America has always been that you can live the life you want to live. The government prevents harm, but doesn't dictate your life. Germany isn't like that. You must conform, in ways big and small that add up over time. Anyway, I don't want to get too political here.
I'm under no illusions about the Canadian (tech) job market right now. I know it's struggling, like most of the Western world. But from where I'm standing in Germany, the trajectory here looks worse, not better. Canada at least feels like somewhere that's still moving forward. I'd rather take my shot there than wait for things to improve here.
My plan was the following:
- Activate IEC WHV, move to Alberta
- Land one of the hands-on tech roles I'm targeting (see below) and build 12 months of qualifying Canadian work experience
- Apply through AAIP, either the Accelerated Tech Pathway (if I secure an Alberta employer with a job offer) or the Alberta Express Entry stream once I have the work experience
I'm specifically not chasing developer or software engineer positions. I want hands-on, in-the-field or on-site roles like:
- Data Center Technician
- IT Field Technician
- Network Operations Center (NOC) Technician
- Computer Network Technician
- Cloud/Infrastructure Technician
- etc.
These fall mostly under NOC 22220, which I understand qualifies for both CEC and AAIP streams.
What I'm mainly trying to figure out is how realistic this path actually is. If a position (such as a data center technician, I assume) is actively being sought, would companies be willing to go down this route? I'd also love to hear if there are obvious alternatives I'm not seeing, since federal Express Entry is essentially out of reach for me without stronger French. The other thing I'm unsure about is whether to start applying from Germany or just show up and grind it out on the ground. I know you can delay activating the WHV at the port of entry, so in theory I could land, find something, and only then activate, preserving more of the work permit window for actual employment.
German Senior .NET/Azure Dev planning to move to Canada Spring 2027 on Working Holiday Visa, looking for experiences, reality checks & cert recommendations
I'm a German software developer with 7 years of experience (including apprenticeship/vocational training, which is the German equivalent of a 3-year structured industry certification program). I'm planning to relocate to Canada in spring 2027 and would love to hear from people who've been through something similar.
My background:
- 7 years total experience (including apprenticeship)
- Stack: C#, .NET, Azure, Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, so pretty much the full Microsoft/Enterprise world
- No university degree (German Berufsausbildung / vocational training instead)
- Currently based in Germany
My plan:
- Enter the IEC pool now, get the Working Holiday Visa (Open Work Permit, 12 months)
- Arrive spring 2027, job search on the ground in Ontario
- Target: Ontario hybrid or Canada-wide remote, permanent role
- After 12 months of skilled work → apply for PR via Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
- Sector focus: Enterprise/financial sector seems like the strongest market for my stack
Things I'm unsure about:
The job market, I keep reading conflicting things. Overall it sounds rough (as it is in Germany) but finance/enterprise seems more insulated. Is that actually true or just cope?
The Open Work Permit situation. On paper it means no LMIA needed which should make me easy to hire. But do recruiters and hiring managers actually know what that means, or do you still get ghosted the moment they see you're not already a PR/citizen?
The 12-month clock. This is my biggest concern honestly. Once I land, how long is realistic to find something permanent? I'm budgeting for 2-3 months of job searching but I have no idea if that's reasonable or completely naive.
Certs, would AZ-204 or AZ-400 actually help at senior level or is it mostly juniors who benefit? I already work with Azure daily so I'm wondering if it's worth the time.
No degree —I have a german vocational training instead of a university degree. Does that realistically come up as a filter in Canadian tech hiring or is it more skills/portfolio based?
Would love to hear from anyone who's done the WHV-to-CEC path or works in Toronto tech/finance. Especially if you came from Europe. Thanks
