Image 1 — Found this tortoise in my yard and I’d like to help her survive the heatwave. I put out two shallow dishes of water in the shade. Is there anything else I can or should do? I think she might’ve laid eggs, how can I protect the nest without touching anything?

I’ve tried posting this in two other subs and it was deleted, I just want to help her from a distance.

There’s a turtle in my yard! Should I do anything to protect it?

I don’t want him to be hurt or eaten. Should I do anything to help him? Like provide leaves or something? I’m not going to touch him.

Looking for a land surveyor

Hi all, we are doing landscaping and my neighbor and I are in disagreement about the property line. Based on the drawing we got at the time of buying our home and the Harford county GIS it’s where I think it is, but I’m told this is unofficial without a land survey. I called the company who did our drawing and they said it’s $1800 and they’re booking 4-10 weeks out. We have a small property, 0.21 acres, if that matters. Any recommendations on a reliable company as well as input regarding whether this quote is reasonable would be appreciated. Thanks!

Does anyone else have a lot of plants and sometimes just…not feel like taking care of them?

I have 57 plants. I haven’t bought a new one in probably over a year. A few have died in that time. I’m not depressed, I just have developed new hobbies and sometimes don’t feel like spending so much time watering them all. I don’t know why I’m posting this, I guess I’m looking to see if anyone feels the same sometimes. Thanks.

Pay mortgage monthly vs semi-monthly?

Hi all, our mortgage lender recently changed to a company that allows us to split our payment into two. I would think this makes more sense to pay half of the mortgage on the 1st and half on the 16th to decrease the amount of time for interest to accrue but not sure if I’m doing the math correctly. Is it worth setting up into smaller twice monthly payments? Does it even make a difference? I’m planning to refinance after I get the sign on bonus for my new job in the fall, so I can have a big chunk of money to make the interest rate drop, but this could help in the meantime. Any input is appreciated. Thanks

Best short hikes?

Going tomorrow and hoping to do two short hikes interspersed with going down skyline drive. It’s a day trip and we’re getting there very early, plan to go from north to south and then leaving by about 330. Wife is a trail runner and in good shape, I am more of a beginner with hiking. Thanks!

Shenandoah national park: things to do there in 1 day?

Hi all, I am taking my wife to Shenandoah national park as a surprise birthday present this Saturday. It’s about a 2 hour drive from us (coming from northeast MD), so we’re planning to get up early and spend the day there.

I’d like to do at least some of the skyline drive and also a hike but I’m overwhelmed by the different options. She does trail running and has great endurance, I am more of a beginner but in pretty good shape.

Any recommendations on hikes or which parts to drive? My only plan so far is to go to a restaurant that’s about 30 minutes away from the southern end of the park, it opens at 4.

Thanks in advance!

Edit to add: we are both vegan so I’m assuming we won’t have many food options within the park but if anyone knows of any, I’d love to hear it!

Painting gifts!

I received these brushes and paints (pictures 1 & 2) for my birthday. I was previously using a set (picture 3) I received in a wellness week raffle at work. These paints look very different, any tips for how to use them? It says they’re for use as watercolor or gouache. Thanks!

Hi all, we bought a house in the area about a year and a half ago. We don’t currently have a problem with pests, but would like to be proactive to prevent issues. Any recommendations on reliable companies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi all, I have a question that relates to pest prevention rather than control, so feel free to delete if this is not the correct sub.

Background info: my father in law lives in our basement and has about half a dozen feeding apparatuses outside his sliding door. Off the top of my head I can think of the following: one feeder on a post with a baffle, two or three feeders hanging from under the balcony, two seed blocks hanging from under the balcony, and a little mini picnic table full of seeds on his patio table for squirrels and birds. These are all within 5-10 feet of the door.

I’ve read these items can increase risk of rodents in our home and my wife previously rented an apt that became infested due to a hoarder living beneath her so she’s very nervous about any repeat experience.

I sent my father in law info about preventing rodents in the home (see photo) and he essentially was uninterested in anything he isn’t already doing (his feed is in thick plastic containers inside, right by the sliding door).

My question is: are there pest prevention measures we can take in lieu of his changing his behavior? I’d rather avoid pesticides if possible but will do what I need to. Thanks in advance for anyone who read all this and can offer input!
