Best short hikes?

Going tomorrow and hoping to do two short hikes interspersed with going down skyline drive. It’s a day trip and we’re getting there very early, plan to go from north to south and then leaving by about 330. Wife is a trail runner and in good shape, I am more of a beginner with hiking. Thanks!

Shenandoah national park: things to do there in 1 day?

Hi all, I am taking my wife to Shenandoah national park as a surprise birthday present this Saturday. It’s about a 2 hour drive from us (coming from northeast MD), so we’re planning to get up early and spend the day there.

I’d like to do at least some of the skyline drive and also a hike but I’m overwhelmed by the different options. She does trail running and has great endurance, I am more of a beginner but in pretty good shape.

Any recommendations on hikes or which parts to drive? My only plan so far is to go to a restaurant that’s about 30 minutes away from the southern end of the park, it opens at 4.

Thanks in advance!

Edit to add: we are both vegan so I’m assuming we won’t have many food options within the park but if anyone knows of any, I’d love to hear it!

Painting gifts!

I received these brushes and paints (pictures 1 & 2) for my birthday. I was previously using a set (picture 3) I received in a wellness week raffle at work. These paints look very different, any tips for how to use them? It says they’re for use as watercolor or gouache. Thanks!

Hi all, we bought a house in the area about a year and a half ago. We don’t currently have a problem with pests, but would like to be proactive to prevent issues. Any recommendations on reliable companies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi all, I have a question that relates to pest prevention rather than control, so feel free to delete if this is not the correct sub.

Background info: my father in law lives in our basement and has about half a dozen feeding apparatuses outside his sliding door. Off the top of my head I can think of the following: one feeder on a post with a baffle, two or three feeders hanging from under the balcony, two seed blocks hanging from under the balcony, and a little mini picnic table full of seeds on his patio table for squirrels and birds. These are all within 5-10 feet of the door.

I’ve read these items can increase risk of rodents in our home and my wife previously rented an apt that became infested due to a hoarder living beneath her so she’s very nervous about any repeat experience.

I sent my father in law info about preventing rodents in the home (see photo) and he essentially was uninterested in anything he isn’t already doing (his feed is in thick plastic containers inside, right by the sliding door).

My question is: are there pest prevention measures we can take in lieu of his changing his behavior? I’d rather avoid pesticides if possible but will do what I need to. Thanks in advance for anyone who read all this and can offer input!
