Singapore must be the only country where citizens aspire to downgrade their living standards to retire?

I’ve worked in a few countries and lived abroad for a prolonged period of time as well. One of the strangest things in Singapore is how there seems to be some widely accepted notion that the path to retirement is to sell your own-stay hdb/condo/landed and move to a smaller / cheaper unit to ‘unlock equity’ in your home

To be very honest I find this bizzare - in nearly every other place I’ve been people work towards retirement by finding a forever home and working their way towards it, and making plans to enjoy life at that point. And they are usually happier than not.

I really haven’t heard of anyone who’s actively looking to downgrade their lifestyle to retire, except in Singapore. What’s the point of working your whole life to move into a small and old hdb flat when you retire??

I really wonder what people think about this. Of course I understand retiring gracefully is a privileged thing. But hey shouldn’t we aspire to that? Seems like everyone is so blue pilled on the sg asset progression game they forgot that life is meant to be worth living..?

Why do older Singaporeans like to delight in the plight of younger Singaporeans who are more critical of issues in SG?

Was looking at this post by someone who was lamenting the current state of Singapore. While you may disagree with the author, I was quite bothered by this poster who argued that the author (who seems to be young) SHOULD NOT be proud of singapore since they didn’t contribute anything to the achievements of the country

I think people like this show why there’s a generational divide and why the youth in SG are increasingly alienated. Imagine not choosing to be born and some boomer hits you with ‘hey you should be grateful for everything you didn’t do anything to help the country just accept everything and don’t you dare be critical about anything’

Ironic since the government just appointed a bunch of ministers who obviously grew up in the phase of Singapore’s prosperity

Someone tell this fella how stupid he is please

Singaporeans - why do you like to double down when you are confronted about doing something obviously wrong?

Context : there are about 15 season parking lots in my area, and many people illegally park because they don’t want to pay for parking

Today I went up to a driver who illegally parked in a season parking lot. Ad verbatim, I said ‘hi uncle, do you mind not parking here. This is a season lot and there are limited lots. We pay for these lots.’ Unsurprisingly, his immediately reaction was to raise his voice and say ‘WHY CANT I PARK HERE’. I am quite resigned to these occurrences so I just said ‘uncle, can you repeat this so I can record it and send it to the authorities’. He stared at me and yelled ‘OK I MOVE LA’ and drove off.

Seriously, if you already know you are doing something wrong, why is the default reaction to double down? This sort of situation has happened nearly every single time (total 6-7) I approached someone because I had literally nowhere to park. Other times I just parked in another lot knowing full well another resident is going to come home and have the same problem if nobody says anything

Singapore retrenchments climb in 1Q, with sharpest incidence among degree holders

https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/retrenchment-higher-degree-holders-employment-jobs-q1-2026-6183016?cid=internal\_sharetool\_iphone\_15062026\_cna

The Reddit horde is going to come for me, but this trend is barely beginning. It’s gonna get much worse for everyone and if you are still in disbelief / blaming the govt / blaming foreigners all I can say is all the best to you

a long form on what she said and the reaction around it. For me, I think we are entering some truly dangerous and frightening territory with the general logic that seem to be deployed against her comment

hope some of you find it interesting and useful for debate

btw to all you woke warriors out there, sinkie is not a derogatory term (it’s literally used in every thread and comment section here), and the vitriol in the comments section simply reiterates there THERE IS a general unfounded belief that Singaporeans deserve more

I don’t think we do, but hey keep the hate coming in the echo chamber, I’m lovin it
