Great that new restaurants are opening in Marin. But $14 for a beer?

Tu Tap finally opened in the old Keintz Hall space. Anyone been yet?

Checked out their menu online and nearly fell out of my chair. $14 for a beer. Fourteen. Dollars. For a beer.

I already thought $9-10 was pushing it but apparently that's now the budget option. Is this just the new normal, or is dropping $14 on a beer the new flex for the modern Marin dad?

At this rate I may finally be forced to stop drinking altogether.

My Tonal rental experience so far, a few gotchas worth knowing before you sign up

Hi all. 58yo active guy here, and I've been really interested in getting a Tonal. A friend raves about his, and my wife and I recently moved to a larger semi-rural house that's further from our gyms and we had no space for one at our previous, smaller place. So now felt like the time to seriously consider it. I'm one of those guys who researches everything to death before deciding, so I figured I'd post here to help others like me.

Before I found out about the rental program, my plan was to buy a used Tonal off Marketplace or Craigslist. As expected, that turned into a hassle. I live in a big metro area, so a lot of the units were an hour or more away in heavy traffic or meant heading into the City, which I avoid when I can. And it went about how you'd expect. I hit flakers and questionable situations (a lot of units are unmounted and can't be fully tested, and a couple hadn't been powered on in years), and whenever a gently used one showed up at a good price, it sold fast. For a retired guy, I'm pretty busy and not glued to my computer waiting to jump on a deal.

I also had some hesitation about deinstalling and reinstalling the unit. I knew I could do it since I've mounted several TVs, but it still seemed like a pain. The no-warranty thing was daunting too. Reading this sub for a while, it seems people have had wildly different experiences getting a used, out-of-warranty Tonal repaired. I didn't want to spend $1,500 to $1,700 (average used price in my area) on something that might develop a problem that may or may not be fixable, for an unknown amount of money.

I considered a refurbished unit straight from Tonal, but honestly, I worried I'd buy the $3K machine, not use it, and end up being one of those people reselling it on Marketplace a couple years later. I'll confess I'm not the most disciplined person, and neither is my wife, who's also interested. I've had stretches where I motivated myself to hit the gym daily, and stretches like now where I only make it 2 to 3 times a week.

Then I found out about the rental program. The free month sounded good, and $219/mo minus the included subscription meant I was really paying about $160/mo for the rental itself.

Well, I just finished signing up, and there are already some gotchas. Not necessarily dealbreakers, but things worth noting.

First, my state taxes equipment rentals, so I'm paying an extra 9.25%, which brings it to $237/mo. So much for the $219 I'd budgeted. Not a huge delta, but I don't love finding out that something I thought cost $X actually costs more. Second, and I still need to confirm this with Whim/Fragile, the rental company partnering with Tonal, is the minimum commitment. The first page of the order form says "Pay monthly with no commitments. Cancel and return anytime with free professional deinstallation." But the Ts&Cs at the end of the order mention a 3-month minimum. I'm waiting on a callback from Whim, but if it really is a 3-month minimum, that's news to me. Third, I emailed Whim last week asking what the purchase price would be, and they said purchase offers aren't on a fixed schedule and aren't guaranteed, and if they do extend one, it's at their sole discretion based on the equipment's age, condition, inventory, demand, and fair market value at the time. So it's hard to know what buying would even cost if I went that way.

Anyway, I'm now waiting on a ship date, and in the meantime I'm having an electrical outlet added in my garage where the Tonal's going. I'll post updates as I go, to help others who are weighing a Tonal rental.

Retired, child-free couple in our 50s looking to make couple friends in Marin

Hi all. My wife and I are in our very active, youthful 50s, child-free, and retired. We'd love to make more friends but it's proving tough. Everyone around our age seems buried in kids, jobs, or just life.

I've made a couple of new guy friends I'll grab a beer with occasionally, and my wife has met a few gal pals at her fitness class. But what we're really after is meeting other couples we can hang out with.

What clubs or social activities would you recommend? I tried The Elks and have been to several events, but the crowd skewed older and the culture was pretty drinking-heavy. We're actually trying to cut back on drinking, so it wasn't a fit.

Also belonged to the Groundfloor for about six months, but it was more as a coworking space, and I don't work. The events I went to there seemed to be more business networking rather than genuine friendship. During the day everyone had their face buried in their phones or laptops and were "grinding." We're about as anti-grind as you can get.

We heard from a friend in the City that the Bay Club by the Embarcadero has a really social scene with lots of events. Does anyone know if the Bay Clubs up here in Marin have a similar vibe? Are there any clubs or events we should consider?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Just trying to get out there and meet some good people.

[US] Cautionary experience with Commonplace - trycommonplace.com - fitness equipment arbitrage

I've been hunting for a used Tonal on Facebook Marketplace and my price range was around $1,500. I messaged a seller who told me she was selling one for a friend and to text another number. That guy called and turned out to be from Commonplace - website trycommonplace.com - a company that buys and resells fitness equipment.

He pitched a like-new Tonal at a good price, with free pickup, delivery, and installation included. It sounded too good to be true and I said so. He assured me they were legit and had me pay a $1 deposit on their site to reserve it, with the balance due on delivery.

He said he'd follow up the next day with photos and video of the used Tonal and a delivery schedule. Then he went dark. No reply to texts, and his voicemail was full. While I was waiting on Commonplace, other Tonals came up on Marketplace that I couldn't pursue because I was tied to this deal. Then I noticed they'd placed a pending charge for the full purchase amount, not the $1 I was promised.

He finally resurfaced three days later saying the seller hadn't confirmed a pickup time. Basically they hadn't heard from the seller. I told him to cancel if nothing changed by end of day.

As far as I can tell, the model is arbitrage where they buy from private sellers and resell to people on their site. Maybe that works sometimes, but it seems sketch, since they're dependent on sellers and buyers not backing out and don't appear to hold their own inventory.

Had it gone as described, it would've been a great deal. Instead I got poor communication, a full charge I didn't authorize (which did fall off after I canceled), and an order that left me stuck. Worth being cautious with this website. Seems very scammy.

What happened to the Merlin YouTube summarizer and how can I get old behavior back?

I've been using the Merlin chrome extension for at least a year, maybe 2. The only thing I use it for is to summarize YouTube videos. In the past it would automatically generate a summary of the video in easily read, bulleted chunks. These days, I have to click the "summarize" button and an AI screen appears and typically does nothing. I've tried different AI engines and it's the same or worse behavior. How can I get my automatic short summaries back again? Thanks.
