What's the correlation between consuming fictional sexual material and real-life attractions?
Reposting since the previous didn't get answers, and another user who messaged me seemed to be interested in the aswers. I have been seeing (and sometimes participating in) a lot of discourse and arguments about this topic, especially when the material in question depicts a problematic, or non-consensual situation or people. I have seen a lot of claims (and to be honest, including from me) on both sides on what therapists and psychologists think about it, but it has all been hearsay, which is why I'm asking here.
Basically what I'm asking is:
If some form of media, intended for sexual arousal, depicts some X thing, whether that be a situation, a person, an object etc., and the consumer feels aroused by said thing, how often is it the case that they will also be aroused by X thing in real life?
If that X thing is something non-consensual or someone incapable of or someone not giving consent, is consumption of such media harmful, helpful, or neutral? Perhaps it can be all three, but when and in what situations?
I would like to know your opinion + the opinions of all therapists and psychologists in general (or at least what you think are the general opinions). I would like my answers from verified therapists. I would also appreciate if someone could tell me where this is more appropriate and more helpful to ask, or/and where I'll get answers closer to what therapists and psychologists think.
