Gotta start somewhere I guess

Just wanna share my time last night

Went to a bar where bands were playin for free and went with some friends. Music and vibes were good, had a drink in me, a lil high, and spotted this gorgeous woc across the space. I walked up to her and (i think someone from this sub or another mentioned this approach🙈) asked "Are you gay enough to let me buy you a drink."

IF IT WASNT FOR THE DRINK I DONT THINK I WOULD'VE HAD THIS COURAGE😭 ty whiskey sour 🙏🏽

Got her a drink and asking about her, calling her gorgeous and all that. But then I started to notice something.... As I was trying to get to know her, she barely turned the questions back to me. There would be brief pauses that were awkward until I asked her MORE questions. She was more than happy to "yap" but I felt like the curiosity towards me was non-existent.

I started feeling like an interviewer or a fan and fuuuuuck that. Feel bad about this but I eventually started to feel bored of the conversation. But because this was my first time ever hitting on a woman, I didn't know how to exist respectfully.

Also a dude behind me literally LOOMED OVER ME to tell this girl he liked her hair 😭 I gave him the craaaaaziest look like MOVE OUT THE WAY.

Anyways, I'm starting to notice majority of people are very bad at conversation and one of the main reasons I hated dating apps. I would rather talk to you in person to gauge the REAL you, not a version of you that only shines behind a screen. Texting and the convenience of it gives people a false sense of closeness+boldness that would have never translated in person.

Maybe I'm the one bad at striking conversation. But again, she went on and on about her experience or about herself so I guess I hit the right spots. But the curiosity or inquisitiveness wasn't returned. Is it poor social skills? Or she just dgaf 😹 Maybe she wasn't into me and went along with the facade as long as she could... but I didnt sense any cues she wanted to leave the convo 🤷🏽‍♀️

I'm not too mad. I'm glad I broke out of my shell and approached someone I found attractive. I see it as a step in the right direction. Gotta get better at crowd work and learning to walk away before it gets to that point I suppose.

Trying to not feel to down on myself, maybe it was the environment or maybe how I look (multi-colored dyed mullet) that most people don't approach me bc maybe they're intimidated? But there were other alt people at this bar too so... 🤷🏽‍♀️

lol thanks for reading.

do you shoot your shot in ANY setting or only queer ones?

so im going out tonight with my straight friends and it got me thinking how easy they have it since majority of places are predominantly catered to them. the strip we're going to is full of bars and i would say the area is a mini nyc? i would be scared to shoot my shot at anyone i see cute (scared in general bc i never flirted or approached anyone, but thats a diff story lol🥹) because theres no guarantee they're queer.

do any of yall say fuck it and approach someone respectfully or wait for the right setting (ie queer catered events) to flirt around comfortably.

what career paths out there to pivot from a stagnant print job?

hello friends from across the screens. 28f based in NJ

been at this family owned, small business print shop as a designer for 4yrs. Started at 18/hr now make 20/hr. Sadly this is the highest I have ever made. Previously worked retail and as a barista, a time where i was ecstatic to make 15/hr 💀 Anyways, there's no chance of upward mobility in an environment of 10 people total.

I'll save the backstory, but I truly believe I don't possess any design skills that are transferable to a 'real job.' I have a BFA in Animation and if you know that market... I settled for this. With the economy lately, I want to make more than a measly 20/hr and the owners aren't getting younger.

some skills I picked up:

  • pre-press and file set up
  • preparing files with die lines for printing and cutting
  • prepping files with print specifications based on finishes or bindery
  • adobe illustrator and indesign
  • and probably more

My other coworker likes to call herself a graphic desinger but the stuff we do here is anything but. I wouldn't be opposed to staying here if I was unioned like her, but alas the owners are cheap (and no I can't ask to join).

I don't see a future for me here, but I been out of the game for so long... I don't know how my skills can transfer to another job. I'm open to anything multimedia related and with some form of creativity. Open to options and biding my time, studying and building skills, then jumping ship when the job market (hopefully) settles.

erm I also have dyed hair, piercings and tattoos so a creative sector that isn't too uptight about that too, but willing to go covert if absolutely needed.

thank youuu🙏
