Happy to officially be part of the group (and thanks for the advice)
just bought my first 300 and can’t wait to get it out on the road, after a mandatory timing belt replacement of course lol

Pretty much the title. I recently bought a 1984 Nissan 300zx, and I'm looking for recommendations for a good mechanic in the area who works on (or specializes) working on older cars. In my brief experience looking around, a lot of shops around aren't too keen on working on older cars, so I'd love to get some recommendations!
And just for reference I'm in the North Asheville/Weaverville area. Thanks!
Hey everyone, brand new to the 300zx world, and I'm going to look at an '84 next week. Checked out the wiki here, and have been doing some research, but would love to get a little extra input on what may be good to check out once I'm up there. I will be traveling a good distance to see this car, so I want to make sure I'm really doing my due-diligence.
For a little additional context, based on the photos and video, it *appears* to be in really good shape. 40k original miles, original paint and original interior both look practically flawless, garage-kept, 1 owner.
I know where to look for rust spots (rocker panels, around muffler, beneath spare tire/toolkit well, t-top panels), but any other spots to check would be recommended.
Mechanically, I know there is the fuel injection issue to check based on the recall from back in the day, but would the timing belt be an issue as well? Everything I've read says change it every 60k miles religiously, but with 40k miles, should I even worry about that at this time?
Very new to working on cars, but my intention for this car is to really expand my knowledge base on the topic, so any other tips or considerations would be most appreciated!
Hello everyone, in a bit of a pickle here, and was hoping for some additional perspectives! I've recently inherited a good bit of money, and I've decided to get a new car with a portion of it. My original plan was to pick up a new GR86, which is a car that I have been very interested in for while now, and sell my current car (2013 Mazda3) that is still very reliable and in good shape (with about 140k miles as an FYI). However, I've started toying around with the idea of getting an older USDM Japanese car from the 80s or 90s as a weekend/fun driving car, and keeping my current car as my point A to point B daily driver. My thought was also that if I go with the second idea, I can spend a good bit less money (thinking I would budget about 20k), and still have the old reliable Mazda.
Problem is, it is pretty overwhelming with the sheer number of options for an older Japanese car, so I would love some recommendations! My criteria is
- 80s or early 90s models
- Budget of about 20k
- Sporty 2-door style
- Manual Transmission
- Left-Hand Drive
- Convertible/T-top would be a bonus
- Reputation for reliability/ease of working on/finding parts (I've just started getting into doing car maintenance and repairs myself, but I've got a lot to learn)
For a little additional context, my daily commute is also extremely short (about 20 miles per week), so my threshold for what could be a daily driver is pretty wide open.
Would love for people to weigh in on what they would do in this situation, and any and all car recs for option #2 would be appreciated! Thanks!
