I’m trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong

Hey Joburgers. So I’m trying to figure out where I’m going wrong with my approach of talking to people, socialise and just make friends. I don’t know why but, it seems like nobody wants to talk to me or interact with me, and this isn’t intended to be some self-pity post, I’m trying to understand what I’m doing wrong. I reached out to an old friend of mine and it was okay I guess, we talked a bit usually before we would hang out for a good few hours but this time I struggled to find myself to stretch us hanging out for even two hours because it felt like I was carrying the conversation. I also attended a small social gathering just by myself and I literally approached 20+ people there just to see if I could make any friends at all. People greeted sure but I’ll be making eye contact, they’ll be very closed off, and short, the conversation just seems to die off after some time and there’s “the pause”, I’m sure everyone has experience that. Then eventually I did meet someone who I thought maybe I could be friends with but didn’t even manage to get their number and they didn’t bother getting mine either though so. I tried going to another event this weekend, there were people there, I talked to a few but was less forward and when I did talk to some people and they were so short and I’d ask them about their interests and how they found out about the event or whatever it may be. Then little to no interest directed back at me, I don’t understand what it is I’m doing wrong. I haven’t had a good and sincere friend in like 11 years and I’ll admit at that time I did push people away because my parent passed away. But now, idk.

A question for South African men

For my fellow South African men. How do you cope with your emotions, the weight of the world, whatever your responsibilities in life are, your own self-esteem, personal relationships/friendships/family, and work? I feel like as men none of us address any of it with each other and we just talk about a lot of superficial on the surface stuff, bottle it up and chuck it on the back burner. I understand we have to just get along with it and that’s been my attitude for the longest time, but shit man. I realise a lot of what I do isn’t even for myself, it’s for other people and I’m not really happy. I don’t actually have any real friends, I don’t hang out with people, I’m just floating through life one day at a time.

SARS is actually disgusting, like wow.

I was just watching a video discussing how a person budgets, where all their money goes and what the deductions on their salary are. For reference, the original salary was R395k, net income was 🥁🥁🥁R192k! WTAF!

Edit: yes there were some other minor deductions such as medical aid contributions, UIF, and retirement. However the largest chunk was SARS, and also it was monthly, not annually. This was a very high earning individual.

What’s everyone doing with their Saturday?

So! What are my fellow Joburgers doing with their Saturday? I’m bored to death and I don’t feel like doing my work currently. I wanted to attempt to make friends but had no clue where to go or what would even be fun to do for a non-drinker.

Any suggestions?

Anyone know of a scrapyard or BMW spare parts dealer?

Hey everyone!

So it seems like everyone on FB marketplace, Takealot, etc is only interested in ripping me off. And to get stuff from overseas takes forever, even though it is cheaper, I am willing to wait but before I do order I wanted to see if anyone knows a scrap yard or spare parts dealer in Joburg that will have BMW parts, specifically bumpers, headlights, lens covers? At a decent price, not 10x the cost price.

For those in finance/banking. What news outlets do you use?

So I will hopefully be entering the finance/banking sector soon, and I wanted to know what news outlets to pay attention to that are important to the local market or the sector as a whole? What are important things to look out for, like are there ever any specific headlines that are extra important or what do you generally look out for that helps in your job and keeps you appraised of the economic landscape?

The SUV-mania needs to stop

Why! Why does everyone and their mother buy an SUV!😭 I’m so tired of every car I see on the road being an SUV. And yes I understand manufacturers are mainly making these, many Chinese brands specifically do not make Sedans but damn! What are you guys doing or where are you going all the time that you need that much space?? And they just keep getting bigger, and bigger. And they’re everywhere! It’s like I’m in the matrix.

But anyway, thoughts?

Are fines tied to your ID or the vehicle?

Hey everyone!

So I have a question. Are fines on a vehicle tied to the owner ID or the vehicle registration? Someone I know wants to transfer a vehicle but they have outstanding fines and the license disc is behind, so if they were to attempt to transfer would the person receiving the vehicle have to settle the fines and penalties or just penalties?

Would I be able to get chronic meds at a public clinic/hospital?

Hey everyone!

Hope you’re all doing well. I wanted to know if I would be able to get medication for epilepsy at a public clinic or hospital, and if so how difficult would it be to do so?

How do companies actually do reference checks?

Hey everyone! So I’ve gone through to the next round of interviews for a fairly big firm and it’s pretty well known too, it’s in the Fintech sector. So I wanted to know how they do their reference checks?

Prepaid electricity meter eating money and electricity

Hey everyone!

I am absolutely struggling with this prepaid meter. It’s eating cash and electricity. Since around 1-2 months ago it began eating WAYYY more electricity than usual and I have no idea why, and I’m not talking teeny tiny amounts. I’m talking about R500 isn’t lasting 2 days. Now I can’t even afford to get City Power to come and take a look because they wanna charge me an arm and a leg just to send out an electrician. It’s absolutely bonkers that it’s eating this much electricity when I cook with gas, don’t use the oven, don’t use an air fryer, don’t use a kettle, no electricity blankets or heaters, NOTHING. So what the hell is going on and what am I meant to do?? This thing was only installed maybe mid last year but it only began eating this much electricity within the past few months and now I have no idea what to do.

Any help is appreciated!

I don’t get it, what am I doing wrong?

I don’t understand it, I’ve been applying to so many jobs with almost no luck. Sometimes it feels like there’s nobody behind these job postings.

And I’ll apply to so many different types of jobs. Grad programs, internships, admin positions, learnerships, etc. The only responses I’ve got were from one job in WC but then they ghosted me too, and some commission based stuff.

I mean I studied and got a higher certificate and an advanced certificate because I couldn’t afford to do a full degree and completed both with distinctions. I tick the box on paper for so many of these jobs. I have some experience, yet nada, not even a response.

How did you defeat/overcome societal expectations?

My fellow South Africans,

How did you overcome, defeat, escape, or fight back against the societal, or community expectations/pressures that were placed on you before you were even born?

What do I mean by this? Well, specifically in the community I come from. Everything is like politics, and I don’t mean the joke that’s South African politics. I mean game of thrones type politics. You say something wrong, suddenly you’re looked at sideways. You decide to date outside your race, yohhhh it’s like you killed someone. You say no to literally ANYTHING, you be anything other than a yes man, and you’re the spawn of Satan himself.

Boundaries are literally non-existent, especially within immediate family. “Can you pay for x?” The answer must be yes or you’re the most evil person ever and you never loved your mother. “Can you drive me to the airport on a Saturday at 7 AM (even though I earn more than your whole net worth?)”The answer must be yes or else you’ll get gossiped about and everyone will look at you sideways.

Like, how do you escape this, fight back against this. I feel like it’s such an impossible task unless you completely cut them off.

How the year started vs how it’s going

So how did your year start and how is it going?

I’ll start :)

I had a car, I had a pretty decent amount of disposable income/savings in my bank account, some job interviews lined up, I was setting up my business and had the capital to do so as well.

Where has the year taken me? My car got written off at the start of the year, it was a car that was paid off from ‘04 and you can buy fokall with that in Cyril’s economy. Then my family decides, “okay let’s invest in get rich quick schemes”. So bam, there goes my marketing capital for my business and the insurance money too. I’ve got stock, I’ve got a website, I’ve got ideas, but no capital to get it out there in a decent way. The job interviews went okay, but I’ve got no car and no method to get there, nor any money, basically just living hand to mouth.

Just a quick vent! how is your year going?

What is one thing from your childhood you miss and one thing from your childhood that you’re glad is gone/glad is now here?

Okay well, I’ll kick off with a few.

Things I miss: A decent USD to ZAR exchange rate, people actually interacting with each other in a friendly manner, not seeing a strip mall/shopping centre every 2 KMs. (I live in Jozi for reference)

Things I’m glad are gone/glad is now here: in terms of things that I’m glad are gone. I really don’t know because I miss a lot. I like having convenient delivery services though, awesome banking apps, and I guess bounce inc. is pretty cool too. I miss boogaloos though (unrelated I just miss it, if you know you know).

A question about Paystack

Hey everyone!

So just wanted to know for any fellow SA business owners if you used Paystack and if so, did they ask you to give them an invoice from your supplier and an inventory list?

Any useful info is welcome! :)

TikTok not approving my business account

Holy shit what is wrong with TikTok?

I tried to get my business account verified. Uploaded all the necessary documents, it says it was denied (not even an hour later), didn’t give me a reason why but said I should reapply. When I go to check the status of the application, it loads the entire page for a whole new application every time. I have no cooking clue what to do.

TikTok can ligma balls. I opened a support ticket like two weeks ago and they haven’t responded.

Any idea what I should do??

What is the best designed website you’ve seen that made you instantly want to buy?

Hey everyone!

I’m in the early stages of my business, and I’m pretty much a one man army. Been doing web design, marketing, logistics, etc. So I decided to get some outside input from people I know and was told my website looks “too professional” for a startup fashion brand(???). I’ve gotten some sales but definitely could be doing better.

So what websites have you seen, that wowed you and made you want to buy?

Which type of sales work the best?

Hey everyone!

So I’m trying to decide on a sale to possibly get some actual sales. I’ve been getting a decent amount of traffic to my store with collabs through influencers and organic marketing but for some reason it just isn’t converting. I’ve installed heatmaps, watched some replays and it’s mostly people who window shop. Some look through the collection of items and eventually click off, some will go to a specific items and check it out but I’m also just really having trouble finding where the disconnect is in my marketing and offer.

So I thought it might be the price since for my brand and niche my prices may be scaring customers away especially in the current economy. So I’m trying to decide between a few different sales strategies.
A buy 1 get 1 free, making everything in the store the same price as a mid year madness thing, or trying something else.
