I just finished Deadeye Dick… and then ordered 7 other Vonnegut novels

I thought the first part’s about Rudy’s father are some of the funniest bits of character exposition I’ve ever seen. From the Hungarian Lifeguard garb to the comical ignorance of Hitler and even his adoration; it’s great stuff. I found the rest of the book, though, very dreary if not very self deprecating. Rudy seemed to be a very haunted man by his accidental killing, it came in little bursts throughout even as his time as a pharmacist but the nature of failure throughout the tale always left a tinge of sadness. All and all, I want more and more from him.

Oh yeah, I also bought 7 Dial Press copies (it was 50 bucks, pretty happy about it). These’ll probably make up my main material for the rest of the year into next. Very excited!

Edit: 7 of other novels. Not of this book, lol.

How do you all read poetry?

Forgive me if this doesn’t fit with the forum but It’s something I’ve had a hard time with. I really like poetry and have several collections of epics and collections from Whitman and Frost and others but I really just don’t know how to read it. Is it like literature where you try and get “the point” and move on, do you study certain works? It’s always confused me. In school it was easy because I had work attached but in my free time it’s always kind of just confused me. Any advice or personal experience is appreciated.

Finished Absolom, Absolom! by William Faulkner and… my God

I took this challenge at the beginning of July and it’s took me on one of the saddest, most grueling and strenuous tales of the civil war south, and its ending has simply left me gutted. I don’t have a lengthy academic analysis on this, I just want to express how absolutely gross and emotional this work has made me feel. Anyone have similar thoughts or feelings?

Gone with the Wind: Southern classic worth reading or Lost Cause bs?

I’ve been on sort of a kick for southern works and came across Gone with the Wind but have always been generally apprehensive because it’s now kind of considered racist/revisionist. Can anyone with insight tell me if the narrative is worth it?

The inverse of another post: what are some boring but valuable classics that everyone should read?

Often times I find myself enjoying “boring” works so I’m curious about what y’all think. Any kind of work will suffice!

Came in today

An original Takoma pressing of Leo Kottke’s debut album 6- 12 String Guitar. Not sure how many Primivist/Kottke fans preside here but I love this album and having an original Takoma pressing is a joy.
