the tragic fate of Lhunara Ithil (Malus Darkblade spoilers!!!)

the tragic fate of Lhunara Ithil (Malus Darkblade spoilers!!!)

I just finished the Malus Darkblade series (by Dan Abnett and Mike Lee) and I wanted to discuss the tragic fate of Lhunara Ithil and Malus Darkblade’s greatest betrayal.

I listened to the first audibook twice and I was still surprised when it was revealed in the fifth book that Lhunara had been in love with Malus. I always thought it was tragic that he “killed” her in book one, but I never picked up on any of the hints in her dialogue that implied she was in love.

Also, I used to think that Malus murdered all of his retainers at the end of book one because he wanted to keep the daemon’s curse a secret. However, Malus willingly reveals that secret both to his retainer Arleth Vann in book four and to Hauclir in book five.

I think now that the real reason he killed Lhunara and the others was out of shame, which took me a while to understand. The way I think of it, Malus’ pride was so great that he couldn’t allow his followers to live with the knowledge of his failure, including his most loyal retainer Lhunara. It was his most selfish act.

However, I think Malus became so desperate and lost that sense of pride as the story progressed, which leads him to reveal the daemon’s curse to Arleth Vann and Hauclir. He even goes out of his way to use the daemon’s power to heal Hauclir’s mortal wound at the very end.

It’s tragic that, if Malus hadn’t been so full of pride, Lhunara could have been spared and most likely she would have helped him in his quest to gather the five relics. In addition, Lhunara would have never become a Chaos lord, damning her soul to Chaos just like Malus’ own soul. She also wouldn’t have lead a horde that slaughtered thousands of druchii.

There’s one thing I had a question about. Malus says “I know” after Lhunara (as a chaos lord in book five) confesses that she once loved him, right before Malus smashes her skull. How long do you think he knew? Cause if he knew from the beginning thats just so fucking sad man.

Campaign idea- the Land of Chill

I just finished reading the Malus Darkblade novels and it gave me the idea to run a homebrew Druchii campaign in the chill lands of Naggaroth. So I started brainstorming some unique careers, I wanna know what you guys think of the careers names and if you have any ideas to share for careers and/or campaign adventure ideas.

I’m going to incorporate ideas from the High Elf Player guide as well like different background traits for each dark elven city and unique career tables to roll on.

Random movement + Skirmishers question

When a unit with random movement has the skirmisher rule are you able to change their direction during that units move?

So for example if I roll 6 total on my 3d6 random move with skirmishers, can they move forward 2 inches, stop, then start moving 4 inches to the left/right?

New Rule for Grand Melee

Anyone know how this is supposed to work with characters? If character joins a unit, could that cause the unit to contain more than 50% of the models? Or is the character counted separately from the unit?

Multiple wounds & Dry as dust- Question

If a tomb kings model with the Dry of Dust special rule gets hit with a flaming attack that does Multiple Wounds, do you roll a D6 for Dry as Dust for each individual wound taken?

So for example, a Chaos Lord with the Mark of Tzeentch gets flaming attacks. He hits a Tomb King using the Ogre Blade and rolls a 6 for multiple wounds. Does the Chaos Lord player then get to roll 6D6, and every 4+ is one additional wound?

Gathering Darkness spell question

“Until your next Start of Turn sub-phase, the target enemy unit suffers a -2 modifier to its Initiative characteristic (to a minimum of 1), a -2 modifier to its Leadership characteristic (to a minimum of 2) and cannot use their General's Inspiring Presence special rule. This spell may target an enemy unit engaged in combat.”

If you cast this spell on the enemy General itself, or a unit that the enemy General has joined, does this spell effectively turn off the enemy General’s Inspiring Presence? Since the target unit “cannot use their General’s Inspiring Presence special rule” and the General is the unit/part of the unit?

poll results on a Line of Sight FAQ

I made this poll the other day to see if anyone else felt the need for an FAQ on line of sight/shooting since so many people disagree on how it works. Thank you to everyone who voted and commented!

The majority voted no. Based on the comments and the poll results, most people think the rules are clear enough that they don’t need to be FAQ’d.

When I said it needs an FAQ I didn’t mean it needed a rules change, just something to go in the “Frequently Asked Questions” section of the next FAQ & Errata to clarify to certain players that they are using house rules when choosing to ignore their model’s vision arcs. Hopefully it will just be addressed in the 2nd edition rulebook and will come with a diagram.

Since we lack of an FAQ, feel free to point to this poll and the post before it if you meet someone who wants to debate the RAW on this subject. My first post contained a rough diagram that you can refer to. On the second post, one commenter made a more detailed diagram that shows the rules in action combined with cover.

Vision Arcs and Line of Sight- FAQ needed? (Poll)

https://www.reddit.com/r/WarhammerOldWorld/s/KgXQTcyxLO

I made the above post yesterday and half the people who replied disagreed on how the rules work. Most counter arguments were simply “that’s dumb” or “that’s too complicated,” not pointing to any actual rules as written that refute my interpretation. To be clear, I don’t actually like this interpretation, but I believe it is correct. It actually nerfs my own play style and I haven’t played a game using this interpretation, but ignoring the rules for vision arcs makes me feel like I’m cheating. I will explain my reasoning, and I want to know if you guys think GW should make an FAQ on this subject to clarify the rules, since so many disagree on the interpretation.

You can check the previous post to view the discussion, but basically all I’m saying is that an individual non-skirmisher model that wants to shoot a target can not do so if the target is not within the individual model’s vision arc, even if that model is part of a bigger unit with other models that do have the target in their vision arcs. This would mostly apply to long, single rank units of infantry shooting at a single model, such as a monster, at a very short range (see the diagram I made in the previous post).

After you determine a unit can see the target unit it wishes to shoot, you must check line of sight for each individual model.

“In order to shoot at something, a model must be able to draw a line of sight to it. Often, not every model in a unit will be able to draw a line of sight to the target. Therefore, when shooting with a unit you must determine line of sight for each and every model in the front rank… To check a line of sight between models, stoop down to look from the model's point of view…”

“If a straight, uninterrupted line can be drawn from within the model's vision arc to any part of the other model, there is a line of sight.”

Therefore, a target not in a model’s vision arc = no line of sight for that model = that model cannot shoot at that target. This seems like common sense but apparently it’s not.

By the way, I think the rules also state that cover only applies on an individual model basis and not necessarily to the entire unit.

“Line of sight may be partly obscured by terrain features or by other models. In such cases, the other model or unit is said to be 'in cover'. To check if a model or unit is in cover, stoop down to look from the first model's point of view… Models shooting at a target in partial cover suffer a -1 To Hit modifier… Models shooting at a target in full cover suffer a -2 To Hit modifier.”

So if a single model in a larger unit wants to shoot at a target that is partially obscured from that singular model only, it takes a -1/-2. If the rest of the models in the unit have full view of the target, those models suffer no penalty for cover.

I know these interpretations seem over complicated, but I genuinely think this is how it is intended to be played. A lot of people disagree which is why I want to know if anyone else thinks this needs an FAQ. I personally think the rules need clarification if this wasn’t intended. Thanks!

Question about LoS/shooting (with pictures)

I want to know if i’m interpreting line of sight correctly when it comes to shooting with a long rank of non-skirmisher infantry.

I made a drawing to show examples of 12 infantry models and their individual front arcs, with a target (the nut) in three different positions.

In the first example, the nut is within the front arcs of models 1-6. In the second example, the nut is within the front arcs of models 6-12. In the third example, the nut is within the front arcs of all models.

My understanding is that if the target does not lie within these models front arc, they cannot shoot, even when standing and shooting. Is this a correct interpretation of the rules?

Also, is there an easy way to calculate the minimum distance required for such a unit to have its target within line of sight for all of its models? Based on the size of the unit and width of their bases (25mm). Thanks!

Travel Mystical Pathway questions

I’ve never used it and am a bit confused on how this spell works.

“If the target friendly unit is not fleeing and has not already moved during this Movement phase, you may immediately remove it from the battlefield and replace it anywhere completely within 12" of its original location.”

Where is “its original location” measured from? The center of the unit, the edges of one of its ranks/files?

And what about skirmishers? Does each skirmisher move up to 12” individually? Or do you measure 12” from any individual model and move the rest of the models to be within that range? Can the skirmishers change formation when they move with the spell?

One more thing. Travel Mystical Pathway states “The target friendly unit cannot move again during this Movement phase.” How does this interact with Arcane Urgency, which states “If the target friendly unit is not fleeing and has already moved during this Movement phase, it may immediately move again.” If I cast Travel Mystical Pathway first, does casting Arcane Urgency second allow the unit to move again?

Thanks.
