Springtime in Whoville [August Poetry]

There once was a town where the small Whos would play, with a winter sun over them, day after day. No Who ever guessed, not the great nor the small, that a snowflake beneath them supported them all.

It settled on ice, all silver and wide, where a deep frozen lake let it peacefully ride. The snowflake sat still through the cold and the snow, so the Whos never wondered what rested below.

The Grinch watched the skies while the Whos sang their song. "I don't like that sun. It's been up there too long.” But the Whos all kept singing and laughed in delight. "The days are long now. It's so merry and bright!"

Then one morn a pond had filled up the square. “A new thing,” they thought, “has just appeared there!” Where their town tree had stood, it shimmered so blue. "It looks like it's waiting for all of us Whos!"

They splashed in the water from morning til night. They floated on flotzels and squealed with delight. They turned themselves bronze as they tanned in the sand, While the Grinch, feeling dread, asked “What is at hand?”

The pond then grew bigger, then bigger some more. It swallowed the parks and the squigmallow store! "It means," laughed the Whos, "there is more room to swim!" The Grinch tried to warn them, "This whole thing is grim."

The water kept climbing. It wouldn't stand still. It wandered through Whoville with watery will. It filled up Who-houses and swept through Who-gutters. Red fish and blue fish swam right past Who-shutters.

The Grinch cried, "Climb quickly! There's no time to waste!" So every last Who climbed Mount Crumpit with haste. They climbed and they climbed to the tippity-top. At the water below, they shouted “Please stop!”

The sun glowed more golden with every new hour, as ice became water beneath all its power. The Grinch and the Whos raised their voices on high. "Can somebody help us? Oh, please tell us why?"

Then Cindy Lou Who, who had newly turned three, said, “Mr. Grinch, please. What will happen to me?” He choked back a sob, held her up to the sky, and prayed that the child would grow wings and fly.

Their shouting flew upward. It drifted away. No ear ever heard it. And on that same day

The mountain slipped under. The singing was through. The tip of Mount Crumpit sunk just below view.

Then children came laughing where spring flowers grow. They tossed little pebbles where melted drifts flow. “Let's play!” said the Cat. “It's a lovely spring day!” Not knowing the Whos had all floated away.
