Trapped in dishonesty & BPD instability—how to navigate when divorce is complex?
Help a brother i need with your advice and experiences.
I’m reaching out to get some perspective from people who have been through similar patterns.
My wife has been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). She is currently on SSRI & mood stabilizers, but her therapy engagement has been on-and-off. Over the past year, I’ve been caught in a relentless cycle of instability, severe mood swings, substance use (cannabis/gummies), and repeated emotional dysregulation.
The core issue that is destroying us is trust and secretiveness. Despite establishing clear boundaries, I keep uncovering a pattern of ongoing, concealed communication with ex-partners, deleting call logs, changing stories about her whereabouts, and minimizing what’s happening when confronted. When I try to address these issues, it quickly spirals into deflection, emotional breakdowns, or extreme guilt-tripping or promising change but happens again (This is the 3rd time this has happened).
I’m exhausted from playing the role of an investigator instead of a husband. I still care about her and want to know if genuine accountability is even possible in this scenario, but I’m running out of options.
To make matters more complicated, walking away isn't straightforward—there are significant personal and family assets involved that make a swift divorce extremely high-stakes and complex.
For those who have dealt with a BPD partner exhibiting chronic boundary violations and secrecy:
- Did therapy (like DBT) ever lead to actual accountability regarding lies/infidelity, or is the concealment an ingrained defense mechanism?
- How did you protect yourself financially and legally while deciding?
- If you chose to stay, what non-negotiable boundaries or legal safeguards (like post-nuptial agreements) did you put in place?
