Hi everyone, I’ve been living in France for about a year now. I really want to connect with people and build a sense of community, but my spoken French isn't fluent enough yet to express complex thoughts or start natural conversations.
Today, I finally took the leap and handed out 11 letters.
I used Claude to translate my letter in french for me: this is what I wrote in the letter:
"You might be wondering, why is a stranger giving me this letter?
My French is not good enough yet to walk up to someone and express what I truly feel. High emotions, complex thoughts, the kind of things that actually matter in a conversation, they get lost when you're still searching for the right words. But I am learning. Every day, a little more.
My primary language has always been English. And before that, other languages entirely. I have been living in France for about a year now, and if I am being completely honest, I have not been able to connect with people the way I hoped. Not because people here are unkind, they are not but because language and social barriers are real, and they are silent walls that are hard to climb.
But I refused to accept that.
I told myself: if there is a will, there is a way. And so I chose this. letters, paper, words written in quiet, as my way of reaching out. Of crossing that wall.
I grew up as an only child. I have spent much of my life in solitude, and I have made peace with that. Solitude teaches you things. It gives you depth, patience, a certain kind of stillness. But somewhere along the way, I also came to understand something I cannot unlearn:
This world means nothing without people in it.
Not possessions. Not achievements. just People a Community or friend who checks on you. A neighbor who waves. Someone who simply remembers your name.
Because I believe this, truly, that the moment you are forgotten is the moment you have truly died. Not when your heart stops.
I don't want that fate. And I don't want it for you either.
So I am here, writing letters to strangers, hoping that somewhere out there, someone reads this and thinks me too.
If that's you, if any part of this resonated, I would genuinely love to hear from you. No agenda. No expectations. Just two people, maybe more, deciding to build a small corner of community together. Starting today. Starting with this letter and you reading it.
Sincerely
A stranger who decided to try"
I'd love to hear your thoughts. How would you feel if a non-native speaker handed you a note like this in your city?
edit: I got inspired after reading this post https://www.reddit.com/r/randomactsofkindness/s/toIeZ6Zxqa
Basically the title, we could go to "Kinepolis Kirchberg IMAX" or other cinemas and treat it as a reddit get together.
For context: I am a male 24 years old, and see no limitations for a person of any age or sex.
I have been living alone in France for the past year or so, navigated a masters degree with lots of issues but was still strong enough emotionally and could carry on.
just recently started feeling a bit of cough and constant fever for numerous days and then constipation turned to physical stomach cramps, and then the emotional turnout started.
was just shopping at lidl where the anxiety attack started, where i followed the old trick of deep breathes but it started heavy tears, where i was shopping and crying around, i am glad nobody cared but it was hard.
I have only my mom back home, which of course i miss but not to this extreme feeling, i feel this hard longing for her, and i feel like everybody in my life is dead and i am too far away from everything. i do take paroxtine 20mg and was constantly visiting the dr during the year and nothing serious had come up and was just filling my meds.
Now i am terrified, i feel scared of future and past, i dont see a point in my routine life and i miss everybody and i am constanlty crying.
So i thought maybe i have gotten some kind of stomach virus like hpylori or amoeba, which also impacts you, but this is something i have never felt in my life, i feel really fragile.
thank you very much for this community to exist and i am sorry if my post doesnt fit, but has anybody felt a sudden crash like this?
Hey everyone, I am planning today to watch "obsession". I have heard some great things about it recently, and I think it would be a lot of fun to experience it with someone else rather than just going solo. If anyone is free and down to join, you are more than welcome.
edit: I meant obsession lol
