Working in Alaska: Unemployment

Basically looking to see if anybody can confirm whether Alaska administers unemployment to non-residen seasonal workers… Typically, I understand, “real” (non-seasonal) jobs have you apply for unemployment in the state in which you worked. But, apparently Alaska has some laws that prohibit them from giving unemployment to non-residents, so that leaves seasonal workers in an interesting position.

Since it’s kinda hard to get a job for only 2-3 months during off season, including other seasonals that typically ask for approx. 6 months, unemployment seems like the better next option.

Have any of you worked out of Alaska for a winter or summer season then applied for unemployment in your home state? Was there any pushback to that?

USCG Captain’s License Question to help an amateur

I’ve been reading from various maribe school sources, but the information all seems to be geared towards people who are remotely familiar with the process already, which I am not.

How and when are you expected to get hours? Can I pay for a course to get the license without ever having gotten hours? If not, am I expected to learn boating on my own alone, then just take the test for formaliti, like a driver’s license? What counts towards hours, or what’s a good resource to learn more without formal education? Does it need to be a motorized boat?

I don’t mind reading, but I’ve been looking around a lot, and cannot find a singular source of information that has addressed all of my concerns.

Lastly, do they expire?

How much do minor collisions affect your future?

If I had not been driving a work rig, I wouldn’t have even called this a collision, but I chose to report it, since it’s my company policy.

There was a small “graze” that happened with the vehicle and a lot fixture. We han’t noticed how close it was until it was too late. No visible damage, vehicle fully functional, no repairs required, vehicle back out on the road the next day. But, because there was contact, it has been reported. No other vehicle, people or insurance involved.

Realistically, how would this impact future jobs?

▲ 14 r/ebikes

Maybe I’m still stuck in the pre-pandemic era, but I just want a bike under 1K.

The last time I saved up to purchase a bike was back in the 2010s. It was a couple $100, but I was proud with myself and had done a good amount of searching and was glad with my decision. I planned to get a better bike once I moved to a walkable city with more accessible lanes, and unfortunately that didn’t happen as quickly as I’d anticipated. But I’d at least been hoping to upgrade for an ebike a few years ago, before ebikes became more “mainstream,” like they seem today.

I could have sworn that my local and even online shops’ pricing didn’t start at upward of 1.5K back then…

All I want is a Class 1 ebike that actually looks like a bike, not a moped or a toy motorcycle. I’m completely OK with spending extra on accessorizing or additional wheels & batteries, but the base price I don’t want to spend more than 1 grand… I‘m seeing that people think this is unreasonable, can somebody please, in detail, explain why?

Mocha colored jewelry?

I feel like this shouldn’t be so hard, but, I cannot seem to find anywhere to buy mocha, chocolate colored, or copper jewelry. I have several different piercings, and I’ve moved on from my rainbow colored sets and style, looking for something more monochrome.

I honestly had no clue it would be this challenging to find basic brown-toned jewelry…

Also, I’m not going to pay several hundred bucks per jewelry item. Maybe I’m naive, but I couldn’t believe that people are actually paying $300-$600 on a single nose ring. If you’re that gal/guy, no, I’m not interested in your recommendations.

I’d like affordable pieces for the average working class individual. Meaning, I rarely would spend over $80 per piece. I’m will to spend up to $200 for certain gold items or chocolate gold, and soooommeee natural minerals or rocks, but again, I have maaaanny piercings, and want all my jewelry total cost to be under 2K.

No shade to the rich, but, from average to average: do you buy mocha colored jewelry, and where??

Any chance of getting a seasonal in Puerto Rico?

I was kinda planning to go to Puerto Rico for at least a month anyways, but thought, “why not get a job while there?“ to have a more fruitful experience.

I don’t want to apply for a full-time job just to quit, and I al don’t know if the island has a seasonal community like the US does. No clue where to look,

I’m open to pretty much any job that deals minimally with guests. Hostels, hotels, teaching in last places on the list. Would be interested in outdoor activities, restaurant back of house, preferably working with adult populations, even admin.

I’d probably even consider something I’ve no initial interest in, since I wouldn’t plan to stay more than like 5 months, possibly even less. No clue where to find jobs…
