StarSense dock on other Dobs?

I’m pretty sure know-it-all daredevils have done this, hence the question: Out of curiosity, how do you fix Celestron’s proprietary StarSense dock on another telescope? Is it by 3D printing something that connects the dock with the typical red dot finder shoe, or are there other genius methods people have figured out? Not that I’m looking to replace my Celestron 12” Dob scope already, just a question that came to mind. TIA

Installing the Lacerta 1:10 dual speed micro focuser kit

Posted this a few days ago, and following on from that, I’m likely getting the item in hand either today (depending on whether my colleague who was visiting the UK and whom I’d had the thing shipped to comes to work today) or tomorrow. How complicated would you say this would be to install for a complete noob? For context, I was able to set up my 12” Dob entirely from scratch out of the box a couple of months ago, so I’m ok with following instructions off a manual (already downloaded the PDF from David Astro and 365Astronomy). Thanks again for any possible help/advice.

First Light: The Moon

Have had zero chances lately to take the scope out because monsoon has set in. Until earlier this evening when the tiniest of windows of opportunity opened up. Quick collimation while running the primary mirror fan at the same time, then out to the balcony. First time looking through the 1 week old ES 24 + 14mm 82° eyepieces on the 2 months old Celestron 12” Dob. Also used the Celestron 3-axes mobile phone holder for the picture through the 14mm (the thicker 24mm is too big for said holder, so the first picture was just hand held iPhone). The scope/eyepieces did an ok enough job, given Bortle 8-9 sky + monsoon clouds.

P. S. Also realised why moon filters are a thing. Left eye got blinded staring at it! Kept seeing weird colours for a good few secs after looking away.

Kolli Hills/Yelagiri: Firecrackers during Diwali?

Slightly odd question, specifically for Kolli Hills/Yelagiri locals: Are there a lot of firecrackers burst during and around the Diwali period? I'm looking to plan a road trip from Chennai (I know it's thinking quite far ahead, but hear me out!) with my new-ish telescope to spend 3-4 quality days in one of these 2 places, when I need the night sky to be as clear and pristine as possible (because otherwise there's no point), and firecrackers would be a complete deal breaker even if the weather is perfect! So help out a brother here, people!

Secondly, anybody with a lead on a place where I could stay, that has access to open fields where I can set up the scope, and is safe in the dark? I'd need a car park and a ground floor room (telescope is heavy) unless there's a lift. Don't require any luxury, just a decent clean room will be fine. I do have the contact details for a home stay in Yelagiri, but nothing for Kolli yet.

In return for this favour, if you're interested and can join me on any of those nights, I can show you some cool stuff in the night sky. I have quite a high-power telescope with some pretty high end accessories to go with it.

Thanks in advance for any help possible.

Lacerta 1:10 dual speed focuser upgrade possible on Celestron StarSense Dob?

Since the Celestron Dobs come with single-speed focusers, I’ve been looking at ways to upgrade my 12” with a 1:10 dual speed. The Lacerta seems to be the easiest solution, except it’s turning out to be pretty hard to find. Came across 365Astronomy UK that currently has stock, contacted them to ask about compatibility and their response was beautifully noncommittal and unhelpful:

‘Hello - As you will know the Lacerta dual speed upgrade kit was designed for Skywatcher single speed focusers. That said many of our customers have fitted it to other manufacturers telescopes, after all the single speed focuser does not have many variations.’

Which is why I now turn to you experts.
- Anybody here upgraded their Celestron model with the Lacerta?
- Any compatibility issues with Celestron’s single-speed focuser at all?
- Is it a 5-min job to replace one of the knobs or is this something best left to experienced hands?
Any insights/help/wisdom greatly appreciated.

Smart eyepieces

Not looking to buy one or anything, asking just out of curiosity, since this is something I just bumped into while looking stuff up. Whatever I’ve read so far seems to suggest go-to telescopes for smart eyepieces. My question: Why can’t they be used with manual Dobs? For instance, what if I tried to connect it to my 12” StarSense Dob? Sorry if this is a bit of a stupid one. And TIA.

Turret question

Would this Baader turret be able to fit ES 82° series eyepieces? The Baader ortho eyepieces fit beautifully obv, but those are pretty slim ones, whereas the ES 82° have much fatter bellies. I currently have the stock Celestron Omni 32mm + the ES 8.8mm 82°, and have ordered the 24mm + 14mm 82° as well. Now I know the 24mm is 2”, so won’t fit the turret which can only take 1.25” eyepieces, but that still leaves the Celestron 32mm & ES 14 + 8.8mm available for easy 3-eyepiece switching. Also, any other considerations I should be aware of apart from just the physical fit? TIA

(Maybe not so) beginner’s setup now complete

- Celestron StarSense Explorer 12” Dobsonian
- Stock Celestron Omni (50° I think) 32mm EP
- ES 82° 24mm + 14mm + 8.8mm EPs (24mm + 14mm not in hand yet; ordered to a friend’s address in LA, will pick up during upcoming U.S. trip. Had to order in a hurry, as everywhere except Agena Astro was out of stock, and Agena had only 1 open box 24mm + 1 brand new 14mm left, both of which I have now bagged)
- GSO Coma Corrector
- Optolong 2” UHC Filter

Apart from maybe a couple more ES eyepieces (82° 30mm + 6.7mm) that I have my eyes on, I plan not to upgrade this kit for at least a decade, maybe longer. Even with the 6.7mm I have reservations, given I live under horrible B7-8 skies, and plan to take the Dob to darker sky spots as often as possible. Thoughts on should I/shouldn’t I?

Just had the first such drive to a nearby hill station where, in spite of the clouds and haze, I managed to bag the following: Sirius, Jupiter with all 4 Galilean moons, Corvus, Alphard, Vega, Butterfly Cluster, Lagoon Nebula, Trifid Nebula, Ptolemy Cluster, Hercules Cluster, Sagittarius Star Cloud, Sombrero Galaxy, Cat’s Eye Galaxy, and a double star that I for my life can’t remember what it was. This is with just the Celestron 32mm + ES 8.8mm, since I don’t have the ES 24mm + 14mm yet. Did miss the 14mm, might’ve been so much easier. But this trip was a good indicator of what the Celestron 12” Dob is capable of, even in the hands of a noob. StarSense was on fire most of the time, which meant hopping from one thing to another was pretty straightforward.

TLDR: Beginner’s (or maybe not so beginner’s) kit now complete, hopefully no upgrades for 10+ years. Bagged a few gems on first trip to dark sky spot with just the 32 + 8.8mm but dearly missed the in-between mag.

Dob’s primary mirror likely shifted slightly while driving

I drove to a dark sky spot with my new Celestron 12” Dob earlier today. Right now I see those 3 marks when I look down on the primary (the one at the bottom is the most prominent, the others are fainter). Suggests that the primary shifted a bit during the drive. Obv needs to be properly collimated again, but hopefully ok otherwise? TIA

Edit: Thank you all. I feel truly relieved to hear people saying this is ok. For a few terrifying moments I was like, did I just ruin my expensive new Dob by driving it ~225km to a dark sky spot?! Also, upon some more brainstorming, this place I’ve driven to is a hill station, and I had to navigate as many as 14 hairpin bends on the ascent. Quite likely that’s when the primary became fidgety, in spite of my cushioning it with the neatly cut foam pads it came with in the box.

Do appreciate all your inputs. First time loading this monster along with its base on my Octavia all on my own, then driving it this far. Was quite a learning curve in itself lol. Will hopefully do better in the future.

What did I see?

In and around Sagittarius, last night around 2:30-3:00am from Chennai, India. Had just come off the Butterfly and Ptolemy Clusters and part of the Lagoon Nebula, when I saw this. AI says it’s apparently the ‘teapot asterism’ based on that part of the night sky, but I know better than to trust it blindly.

Edit: Before I get a barrage of ‘get Stellarium and DIY’ comments, I tried that already. Couldn’t make out that exact shape amidst all the other bright-ish objects in that region.

Second night haul for a noob with new 12” Dob

At the cost of sounding tedious, here’s what I bagged in quite literally my second night looking through a scope all on my own. Last night was a bit of a dud. However, final night tally, May 8-9, 2026:

Constellations: Centaurus, Scorpius, Libra, Sagittarius

Messiers: M6, M7, M8, M25, M22

Naked-eye spotting: Sirius, Spica, α/β Cen, Menkent, Shaula/Lesath split, Zubenelgenubi

Bortle 8-9 sky, cloudy to begin with, cleared up reasonably as the night dragged on. Hadn’t even remotely dreamt of this kinda haul in one night with zero expertise. This is from my balcony which isn’t big enough to even move the scope freely. StarSense was a hero today, because the sky was a lot clearer than last night.

I leave you with my dubious-at-best clicks of the Butterfly Cluster, my ultimate wow moment so far. Even in these crappy pics, one can make out the butterfly shape. Looked 1000x better in reality of course.

First light(s) with new scope

I think I managed to capture Sirius with the stock 32mm EP. Came out slightly better than last evening (with spikes and surrounding stars and shit). Balcony under Bortle 8-9 sky + rain clouds + StarSense failing on me because of said clouds + noob using only the stock Celestron red dot finder with zero expertise, armed with YT videos and wisdom shared by people on this sub. Pretty sure more experienced hands would’ve done way better with a 12” Dob, but at least I’m learning the old school/hard (no StarSense) way. Can’t wait to try this out at a better spot where StarSense hopefully won’t chicken out.

Dobsonian base screeching when rotated

Set this up on my own last evening, because I just couldn’t wait for the installation guy from the dealer to come, which would’ve been next week. It went pretty well overall, although it took its own sweet time. Just one problem: The base is screeching like a banshee when rotated, with or without the scope on. Looked it up online and apparently this is common with Dobsonian bases? Also tried following some of the advice like slightly loosening the nut holding the 2 bottom plates, but didn’t help. Thoughts? Anybody else experienced this, esp 10” or 12” Dob owners? TIA

Arrived yesterday: 30000mAh power bank

Arrived earlier today: Celestron StarSense Explorer 12“ Dobsonian

Expected in the next 4-6 days:
- ES 82° 18mm Eyepiece
- Celestron fan for primary mirror
- GSO Coma Corrector
- GSO 35mm Extension Tube
- Optolong 2” UHC Filter
- GSO Laser Collimator
- Svbony Dew Heater strips for primary and secondary mirrors
- Red headlamp
- Carry bag for 12” telescope
- Heavy duty trolley
- Foldable high chair with foot rest [slight chance this one might not reach me before first intended trip to a dark sky spot next weekend (new moon), but I’ll live]

Planned upgrade in the short-medium term: ES 82° 14mm Eyepiece to cover the current 32-8.8mm gap in eyepieces. The 32mm is stock Celestron, came with the scope.

Open to being roasted/told off for potentially stupid choices. And to suggestions. Some of these might well be overkill for a newbie, but I’m one of those who subscribe to the buy-once-cry-once line of thought. Can’t afford to buy a slightly smaller scope now and keep upgrading scope/accessories in the future.

u/_anupamroy — 2 months ago

Ordered the Dobby yesterday, my first telescope, expecting delivery sometime next week. As a newbie, I perhaps could’ve gone for a smaller beast, but I subscribe to the ‘buy once, cry once’ line of thinking (and my pocket concurs), which is why I went for the biggest one I can possibly carry in my car to drive to dark sky areas (I’m unfortunately in a B8 area, so would need to get away from the city frequently). Can’t afford to keep spending on upgrades down the line.

Exactly similar rationale for eyepieces. Been reading up stuff and watching YT videos on best practices for a few days now. I know I can get cheaper EPs, even those starter EP packs, but I’ve zeroed in on these 3:
- Explore Scientific (ES) 62° 32mm for finder
- ES 82° 14mm for the galaxy workhorse
- ES 82° 8.5mm for planetary zoom etc.

AI confirms that the above 3 EPs covers the entire range, and would be perfect as a set to get going, but I know better than to trust AI blindly. Which is where you know-it-alls get the pleasure in helping out a brother. Do you agree with my research so far? Like I said, these are obv expensive EPs, but they look like they’re keepers, and I plan to keep them. As with the scope, don’t want to keep buying EPs going forward unless there’s something definitely missing in my range.

If you’ve read this far, thank you. Appreciate any wisdom, even telling off.

I got what might sound like a slightly odd question. I have just ordered a telescope, and am looking for places to visit with it, places that have the darkest possible skies completely free from light pollution, away from cities and urban areas where I can set up and use the thing. I live in Chennai, and so far I’ve zeroed in on Valparai/Mannavanur areas near Kodaikanal that seem to have the darkest possible skies in TN. Anybody aware of any good place to stay for 2-3 nights in that area? I’m specifically looking for places outside the city/urban areas, e.g. don’t want to stay anywhere in the Valparai/Kodaikanal itself. There seems to be a lot of tea estates around, so if anybody got any leads there (or elsewhere), would be very grateful. TIA
