I was never able to be an employee during the years I had this condition.
(I am doing fine today because I desensitized).

Doctors never let me be officially disabled, they tended to think I was lying about my symptoms. My family thought I was lying too. At one point I ended up living on the street for half a year.

Does salicylate intolerance prevent you from being employed?
Are your food and shelter needs being met?

If you are employed, do you have any tips on how to get and maintain employment while being salicylate intolerant?

Knowing what age salicylate intolerance tends to start can tell us more about what kind of illness this is.

If it is purely a genetic inability to process salicylate, then it should start at birth. Since you are born with your genes.

If it is a kind of food allergy, then it should mostly start in childhood or infancy.

If it is a kind of food intolerance, then it should start in infancy or early childhood and end around adolescence.

If it is a kind of migraine condition, then it should start mostly around adolescence.

If it is an autoimmune condition like rheumatoid arthritis, then it should start between ages 25 and 45.

If it is a kind of AERD, then it should start mostly between 30 and 50.

The main way that people get vitamin C is by eating fruits.
Depending on how bad your salicylate intolerance is, you might not be able to eat any fruits.
Even if you can eat fruit, modern fruit is very low in vitamin C, because of how the food industry is able to store fruits for months or years before selling them. By the time you get the fruit, almost all of its vitamin C has denatured.

If your gums ever bother you, then you probably have vitamin C deficiency.

Vitamin C is important for healing wounds. Your body needs vitamin C to continuously repair the damage that naturally accumulates due to wear and tear.

If you can't find a supplement that works for you, and you can't eat fruit, there are a few carnivore options for vitamin C as well. Beef spleen has a lot for example.

Women are gluten intolerant about 2.5-fold more than men. So if salicylate intolerance is caused by gluten intolerance, we would expect to see 2.5x more women with salicylate intolerance than men.

If salicylate intolerance is caused by a genetic inability to process salicylate, like how lactose intolerance works, then it should be split more equally between the genders.

Gluten intolerance is strongly related to race.

South Americans natives and Celtic people have the most gluten intolerance. Asian people and north American natives have the least gluten intolerance.

It seems like most people with salicylate intolerance also have gluten intolerance.

The racial makeup of reddit is 53% white, 13% Black, 16% Hispanic, and 12% Asian.

So, if we compare the racial makeup of this group with the racial makeup of reddit as a whole, that will help reveal to us whether salicylate sensitivity is caused by genetics, and whether it is related to gluten intolerance.

Salicylate sensitivity seems to be caused by gluten sensitivity somehow.
Gluten sensitivity is difficult to diagnose, and yet the majority of people in this group have already confirmed that they have it.
The most likely explanation is that 100% of us have gluten intolerance, and many of us have not yet realized that we have gluten intolerance.

There is a theory I have seen repeated on this forum several times, I call it the liver-enzyme theory of salicylate sensitivity.
I think this theory got its start because of people who have heard of lactose intolerance, and they assume that salicylate sensitivity is happening because of a similar mechanism.
Lactose intolerance happens because some people lack an enzyme to break down lactose, and their body suffers because of the excess lactose.

If the liver-enzyme theory of salicylate sensitivity is true, then it must be the case that our blood salicylate level is too high.

What are the symptoms of having a blood salicylate level that is too high?
Excess salicylate prevents your blood from coagulating. So, a person with high blood salicylate levels would bleed a lot when cut, they would bruise easily, and they would suffer more cerebral hemorrhaging in comparison to people without salicylate sensitivity.
The symptoms we experience in this group are not consistent with what we would expect to see if the liver-enzyme theory of salicylate sensitivity were true.

How high of a blood salicylate level is too high? A normal person can take a 500-mg aspirin pill, and they don't get sick. The half-life of salicylate in the blood is about 3 hours. So, 12 hours after taking the pill, the normal person still has about 31 mg of salicylate in their blood. They had over 31 mg for 12 hours, and did not get sick.
If the liver-enzyme theory of salicylate sensitivity was true, then that means people with salicylate sensitivity must have more than 31 mg of salicylate in their blood, for more than 12 hours, to feel any negative symptoms.

Compare that to people in this group. If we even eat 2 mg of salicylate, we get sick. And it doesn't take 12 hours. We get sick within an hour or two.

The evidence available to us all points to the liver-enzyme theory of salicylate sensitivity being false.

Here is an alternative theory to explain salicylate sensitivity:
Part of our immune system is over-reacting to the salicylate. Mast cells get activated. That is why mast cell stabilizers/antihistamines like ketotifen work so well for us.

If you spend a month where your blood salicylate level never crosses a threshold T, and then one day you eat an apple and your blood salicylate level goes 1000-fold above T, then that would make anyone sick.
For people who are prone to salicylate sensitivity, even a 2-fold spike in their blood salicylate level above the acclimated threshold is enough to make them sick.

I used to get sick from eating 0.1 mg of salicylate.
I desensitized in 2022.
Today I take 30-mg of salicylate daily, to maintain my ability to eat foods that contain salicylate.

Staying sensitive to salicylate is dangerous.
Getting exposed to salicylate at the wrong moment can leave a person incapacitated. They could end up stumbling into traffic, or getting into a car accident, or leaving a baby in a vehicle in the sun. They could pass out while walking in the rain, and drown in a puddle.

Now that we have a safe and affordable way to desensitize to salicylates, it is irresponsible to continue living with this curable condition. You owe it to your friends, family, and to yourselves. No one deserves to suffer this way. It is time to desensitize.

Many people today tell me about "late stage capitalism". They say that there is a parasitical class of businesses and lobbyists growing too big, and how productive people need to drop out and build an alternative.

These two groups of people think of themselves as opposites, but they seem to be in agreement about everything.
