RECAST: Actor-only (No models/Influencers) Main Cast

Ok, I did a round of model-based fancasts two days ago, mostly as a visual exercise rather than literal casting, and the feedback was… interesting enough that I decided to redo the whole thing using actors only.

Part of the recast is straightforward: people quite reasonably pointed out that models are not necessarily actors, and if we’re talking about a hypothetical adaptation, performance matters. There were also some canon-specific criticisms worth taking seriously (most notably around Amren, who is Asian-coded in the books,) so I wanted to correct that rather than just defend the original choice. Fwiw - I genuinely didn't read her that way. I wasn't trying to be obtuse. Nonetheless, happy to recast!

THAT SAID, I also noticed a much broader pattern in how the posts were received.

My three male-model fancasts averaged 25 upvotes per post. My five female-model fancasts averaged 2 upvotes per post: a 12.5x difference. Even if I exclude Amren entirely because her casting raised a separate and legitimate representation issue, the remaining female fancasts still averaged only 2.5 upvotes each, meaning the men still averaged 10x higher, and the comments were even more interesting than the scores.

The men were mostly discussed in terms of character fit and vibe: “he gives me Az vibes,” “more Cassian,” “I could see him as Rhys,” thirst comments, age, energy, that kind of thing.

The women were much more often discussed in terms of their appearance itself: Instagram face, fillers, Botox, filters, looking too modern, looking artificial, being too model-like, being the wrong age, not looking natural enough, etc.

Obviously this is not a scientific study, and I’m not suggesting that every person who disliked one of the female fancasts was being sexist. Some of the criticism was completely fair, some was canon-based, and fancasting is subjective by definition. I just found the overall difference in what people scrutinised really noticeable.

So, partly because of the feedback and partly because I was curious what would happen if I removed the “they’re models/influencers, not actors” variable altogether, I recast everyone using working actors.

Here’s the new lineup:

Amren = Greta Lee
This one is the biggest correction from my original cast. Greta fits the Asian coding far better, but she also has exactly the dry, severe, slightly intimidating presence I want from Amren. She can look elegant, tiny and completely unimpressed with everyone around her.

Mor = Ester Expósito
Warm, glamorous, magnetic, very obviously beautiful without feeling delicate. I wanted Mor to feel like someone who could walk into a room in a red dress and immediately own it, but still have enough steel underneath the charm.

Azriel = Emre Bey
He has the quieter, leaner, more inward energy I wanted for Azriel. Dark, sharp, controlled and a little haunted, without visually overlapping too much with Cassian or Rhys.

Elain = Kristine Frøseth
Soft, luminous and romantic without being bland. She has the gentleness I associate with Elain, but there’s enough intelligence and emotional depth in her face that I can also see the stranger, more perceptive side of Elain developing later.

Cassian = Alp Navruz
Big, dark, warm and physical, but not so polished that he loses Cassian’s rougher edge. He feels like someone who could be both a terrifying warrior and the loudest person at dinner.

Nesta = Jessica Alexander
This one clicked immediately for me. Sharp, aristocratic, icy and very striking. She looks like she could cut someone to pieces with a sentence before ever reaching for a sword.

Rhysand = Çağatay Ulusoy
Regal without feeling overly polished, dark without being grim, and handsome in a way that still feels slightly dangerous. I wanted Rhys to look like someone who could be charming, amused and threatening all within the same conversation, and I think he fits that really well.

Feyre = Freya Mavor
Probably the one I was pickiest about. I didn’t want someone who felt too glossy or “fantasy heroine by default.” Freya has a more natural, slightly wild, painterly look to her, and I can buy her both as the younger Archeron sister who grew up hunting in the woods and as someone who gradually grows into High Lady.

BONUS The Bone Carver = Owen Cooper (As seen through Feyre's eyes)

A bonus one, but I’m attached to it. Specifically the Bone Carver as he appears to Feyre. Owen has that combination of youth and unsettling stillness that makes the character work. He can look completely ordinary one second and deeply unnerving the next. He was exactly who I picured as I read the book.

So this is the actor-only version. Same basic visual interpretation, but with the feedback taken on board and the “models can’t act” objection removed.

I’m genuinely curious to see whether the reaction changes. Let me know your thoughts - the good the bad, and the ugly!

Fancast: Hailey Clauson as Morrigan

Fancast: Eren Semercii as Azriel

Can't you just picture him wrapped in shadows?

Fancast: Marlon Teixiera as Cassian

There's something in the boyish kindness of his face, mixed with the ripped ruggedness of his overall look that just screams Cassian to me.

Fancast: Sergio Carvajal as Rhysand

Smouldering, gorgeous, built like an Illyrian warrior.

Fancast: Natalia Vodianova as Nesta Archeron

There's something so balanced and classic about her beauty, I think she'd pull off Feyre's many facets.

Edit: Dammit I meant Feyre! I can't edit the title 😭
