Muay Thai champ straight out of Street Fighter
Everyone out here posting their "modest" setups, so here's mine!
I finish up in here at the end of every night, and it's such a pleasure! It's been a couple of years coming, but I've finally added the last piece to the puzzle: the sound system! And I completely regret wasting time and money on non-AVR systems before this!
I'm still tinkering with tuning and working out how I like it best. Audyssey vs A1 Evo, speaker toe-in, etc. I'm lucky that the speakers positions are almost ideal per the Dolby Atmos guidelines. So far it sounds wonderful! By far the best system audio I've ever owned!
I made the speaker stands myself. I know they're not to everyones taste, but I'm really happy with them, and I think they suit the room aesthetic.
The entire sound system was bought new during EOFY sales, which I'm pretty chuffed about.

Snakoz > Snakz
I've now tried all the new Snakz flavours and not a single one is as good as the old Snakos. They're all weirdly sweet, and the cheese ones taste weirdly milky or something.
It's really disappointing to see a great, Australian-made product get replaced with an inferior imported product, that is also worse value for money (same price, smaller quantity). I used to be super smug about Snakos being better and cheaper than Shapes, but I'm probably going back to Shapes now, despite the price.
Disappointing demo experience - Are my expectations unrealistic?
I’m considering setting up a 5.1.2 system with in-ceiling height channels. I’d never really heard a proper home theatre system before, so I went to a HiFi shop near my work and tried out their main demo room. I was pretty underwhelmed and disappointed actually, but I wanted to discuss some of the issues here before writing off the idea.
I told them that I mainly just wanted to hear what real height channels and object-based audio is meant to sound like. They demo’d a 7.2.4 system for me, but they started out showing me Disney+ movie trailers. That was the first red flag. So, I questioned whether it was actually playing atmos or just using height virtualisation.
Next, they played some scenes from D+ Star Wars movies that I was familiar with. I could hear that it’s better than my current set up (Sony HT-A9 4.1.4 upfiring), but still not really what I was expecting.
I asked if they could play some actual TrueHD Atmos or DTS:X demo clips. They found a BluRay player, plugged it in and popped in a DTS:X disc. I was a little surprised they didn’t already have a BluRay player set up for demos tbh. It was still just movie scenes, but at least it was lossless. I could certainly hear the height channels, but I was expecting more.
Then they told me that the system had not been calibrated for the room.
Overall, the whole demo experience seemed to be geared towards wowing people with bass that blew out your eardrums, rather than actual sound quality.
So, I guess my questions are around expectations. Are my expectations unrealistic? Should I expect more from the height channels, or do movies just not utilise it that much? Was the demo system an unfair representation? Does calibration make that much of a difference? Would the heights be louder and more impressive? Should it feel/sound like objects are practically falling on my head?
