Any tips for improving my portfolio as a fresh grad
Problem/Goal: Hi! I’m a fresh graduate looking for advice on how I can improve my current graphic design portfolio and make it more competitive when applying for entry-level design roles.
Context: I'm a self-taught "graphic designer". Most of my portfolio consists of graphic design work from my experience in school organizations, freelance projects, and my internship. I’ve also included some information about my skills and experience.
I’m most comfortable using Canva, while my skills in Adobe tools are still at a foundational level. I’m currently working on improving those skills as well.
For some context, I didn’t graduate from an arts-related degree—I have a business degree. Multimedia/graphic design was actually the course I originally wished I had pursued, so I’m hoping to make a career shift and land my first job in a field that I’m genuinely passionate about.
I’m also aware that the current job market can be competitive, especially in the design industry, and that many entry-level positions may favor applicants with formal education in art or design.
Previous Attempts: I’ve already created a portfolio based on the work I currently have from school organizations, freelance work, and my internship. I’ve also been trying to improve my skills, particularly in Adobe tools, but I’m not sure what areas of my portfolio I should prioritize improving or what employers might be looking for from someone with my background.
I’d really appreciate any honest feedback or advice on how I can improve my portfolio, build my skills, and make myself a stronger candidate despite coming from a non-design degree.
Thank you so much! 😊
