Anyone have experience with Young Drivers or All Star Driving?

Hey all! My wife has a G1 and is finally looking to start driving. She’s never driven before with her G1 so looking to start from scratch.

I see Young Drivers with great reviews through reddit, although they are much more expensive at $2500 after taxes for their package (20 hours zoom class, 10 hours online course, 10 hours driving).

I found all star driving that’s roughly $1000 after tax (20 hours class, 10 hours of online, and 15 hours of driving). Is the quality that different that it’s worth paying over 2x for Young Drivers?

The other concern is how quickly one can go through this program. I was reading reviews how there can be few weeks between each driving lesson, which is way too slow. Something that complicates the timeline is that my wife is 7 weeks pregnant, and due around third week of February. So we’d want the G2 test to be somewhere around this fall if that’s still feasible.

Happy to hear your thoughts on driving schools in the Woodbridge area!

Are you able to tell what type of material was used for our flat roof? How long do they typically last?

Hi all! I live in a three storey freehold townhouse and a neighbour recently took a nice drone shot of our roof to check the gutters lol. Anyways, it got me interested in what kind of material was used for our flat roof, as I was reading that the life span depends on whether it was PVC, BTO, modified bitumen, etc.

I don’t know anything about roofing. Is there a way you experts can tell what material was used based on this photo alone? How long do they typically last?

In the future when we have to replace the roof, is our only option to have everyone connected (five total units) replace at the same time? A bit worried someone wouldn’t want to given the usual high cost, and whether there’s somehow a way to do just my section (I’m the end unit).

Ps the townhouse is five years old, so I suspect I don’t actually have to worry about replacing it any time soon.

Thanks in advance!

Garage door not closing consistently

Hi all, since about a week ago, my garage door would sometimes not close and open back up. Today was a lot worse, where it took at least three tries to get the door to close.

I’ve tried clearing any debris and trying to wipe down the sensors. I think it’s still hit or miss when it decides to close. Anything else I should look for?

I can call in a pro to fix, but since this issue doesn’t happen consistently, I’m worried it’ll work while the person is here and he won’t be able to figure out what’s wrong.

Any advice would help. Thank you!

Noticing all my bushes have parts that are very yellow and brittle. Can the bushes be saved?

Hey all, complete rookie here. Noticed that all my bushes have some parts that are yellow and crumble when I touch them. Is this just from lack of water, or something else?

If I water them more frequently, can they be saved? Or do I need to do anything else? Just worried this will spread further. Should I prune the yellow dead parts?

Could anyone also tell me what kind of bush this is?

Thanks in advance!

Noticed a few gaps between brick mortar. Is it as simple as applying some mortar sealant?

We had a very windy rain storm over a week ago that led to a ceiling leak. We had a roofer come in to patch some areas, but I also noticed some gaps in the brick mortar in the photo (I count three). Figured I should seal them up to be safe.

Is it as simple as buying mortar filler & sealant from Home Depot and cover the cracks? Or do I need more of a pro to do it properly?

Thanks in advance!

Is it worth making a home insurance claim for $8-10k in water damaged-related repairs?

So the past weekend with the crazy storm in the GTA, we had a ceiling leak on the first and second floors (we live in a three-storey freehold townhouse).

After looking around, the first floor leak seems to have originated from caulking that seems to have torn below the second floor window. The second floor leak likely came from the balcony roof just above it.

The townhouse is just around five years old, and looks like a few other units suffered a leak. The builder representative is actually coming today to check things out, and hopefully they repair the roof for free.

Now the expensive part so far has been the water repair damage company. They came to rip some ceiling and wall out to dry things. This invoice came to $2500, which I thought was very high for that amount of work. They quoted me roughly $5k for the restoration process, but that it is a rough estimate and depends when we proceed with the restoration (we want to wait for a few more rain storms).

I also want to bring a caulking person in and have them repair the torn caulk plus look around for any other damage and fill those in.

I called TD insurance and an advisor is supposed to call back today to discuss. I don’t have first claim forgiveness unfortunately, was not aware it existed.

In summary, knowing that the total cost of repairs will be roughly $8k (to let’s say up to $10k), and a deductible of $2500 for water damage related claims, do you think it’s worth pursuing insurance? Or should I save going to insurance for catastrophic events and pay this out of pocket?

I understand that by even calling TD, they may use this on my file for the renewal even if I don’t proceed with the claim. But if that happens, I suppose I can always just go with a new provider, since I wouldn’t have any claims still on paper.

Sorry for the long post. If it helps, yes we can afford the $8-10k but it’s obviously still a lot out of pocket. But if this is considered a minuscule amount for insurance related claims, happy to just pay it out.

Thanks in advance!

Ceiling leaking from all the rain - should we go through home insurance?

Hi all, we live in a 3-storey freehold townhouse and since the morning, there’s been a leak in our ceiling on the first floor near the window. The ceiling and the surrounding wall is soaked.

Starting in the afternoon, our second floor ceiling also started to leak. There’s a small balcony on the second floor, and I suspect the roof above that (which is right in front of one of the bedrooms on our third floor) is causing the leak. Not sure if this is also causing the leak on the first floor, or if that’s a separate issue.

Is this something we should go through home insurance? We are with TD and have the water damage protection. I wasn’t sure whether home insurance covers this kind of scenario if it’s considered as a maintenance issue. I also read that they may increase rates after calling, even if they’re not going to be covering the repair/damage.

For now, we called a roofing company. They likely won’t come until Monday until all the rain has stopped. I also called a water damage repair company, who told me that after the roof is repaired, they can come by and assess and tell me whether we should go through insurance or not.

New to ever dealing with home insurance so any insight would help! Thanks all.

Would I pass this trait on to my child based on this family pattern?

Hi all, this is a rather silly question but I have always wondered. So I have very small Asian eyes (not just monolid, but actually small in size lol), and to be honest, it’s not a trait that I’d like to pass on to my child.

So my grandma had this trait, and so did one of my uncles. However, my mom did not have the trait (so a carrier), and neither did my dad. My older sister does not have the trait, but I (male) do. My sister has a daughter with the trait.

If it helps, my other uncle without the trait has two sons without the trait. My aunt without the trait has a son and daughter without the trait. However, my uncle with the trait has a son and daughter but I’m not sure about them.

All of the people in the family tree are Korean and have married Koreans, except for me, who’s married to a half Chinese/Vietnamese woman. My wife does not have the trait, and her two siblings (brother and sister) along with her parents do not have the trait.

Based on this pattern, will my kids have the trait or be a carrier depending on if it’s a boy or girl?

I thought this pattern was sex-linked recessive, but I’m reading that eye shape is not on the sex chromosomes. I have no biology background so I hope to look to you for answers! Thanks in advance.
