"Sternly Worded Letter Kata"
>Her hands were still trembling when she flopped down at her desk. The office was dark and still; the chaos hadn't followed her home. At least, not yet. She supposed she should've expected the voice barely arm's length from her when it spoke, but she jumped all the same.
>"Negotiations went poorly?" asked Night Locust, her fond shadow. She spotted him now, comfortably veiled in the dark.
>"N-not as well as I'd like," she replied. "I had to send them a sternly worded letter."
>He leaned in, sniffing the air around her a little more obviously than was strictly necessary. "You smell like fire dust. And there's glass in your hair."
>Kalara couldn't help the cringe that overtook her face. As if to cover it, she let her face fall into her open palms "…it was an extremely sternly worded letter, all right?"
Happy 25th anniversary to one of my favorite book series - Kushiel's Legacy by Jacqueline Carey! This is my fan take on the main characters of Cassiel's Servant, the latest entry in the series, featuring the stoic warrior monk, Joscelin, and the woman he is sworn to protect, reknowned courtesan, Phèdre nó Delaunay de Montrève. Both are chosen by respective angelic powers for divine destinies.
Also including some of my preparatory sketches I did for this cover, as I tried to stay true to the book's medieval French inspired alternate history setting.
Concept sketches created for my Kushiel Concepts illustration project, a personal project of mine exploring the world of fallen angels, mysticism, and masquerades of the Kushiel's Legacy novels by Jacqueline Carey.
As the land from the novel takes great inspiration from medieval France, I researched fencing jackets and other soldiery aspects of the era. These are all meant to inform a fan book cover for the novel "Cassiel's Servant".
