The New Creta Has More Tech, But Our 2018 SX Diesel Still Feels More Special

My dad bought our 2018 Creta SX diesel before Hyundai started loading the Creta with facelift updates, giant screens and every possible feature under the sun. Back then, it just felt like a sensible family SUV. Nothing flashy, nothing dramatic.

But over the last 8 years, I’ve genuinely fallen in love with it.

There’s something about the old Creta that just works. The design feels clean and confident — bold front end, neat proportions, and an overall look that still has road presence without trying too hard. The interiors are simple, practical and driver-focused. No oversized screens, no touch-heavy controls, no gimmicky “look how futuristic I am” approach. Just a solid cabin that feels easy to live with.

And mechanically, it has aged beautifully. It still gives us around 16 km/l, which is honestly impressive for an 8-year-old diesel SUV. Thank God my dad went for the diesel, because that engine still feels like the heart of the car — reliable, efficient, and punchy enough for both city runs and highway cruising.

Now don’t get me wrong — the new Creta is objectively the more modern car. It has more features, more tech, a fresher cabin, better screens, and a more premium feel on paper. If someone is buying a brand-new SUV today, I can absolutely see why they’d choose the new one.

But I still feel the older Creta has something the newer one lost along the way: simplicity and character.

The old one feels more honest. It doesn’t overwhelm you with tech, it doesn’t try too hard to be flashy, and somehow it feels more timeless. The new Creta is more loaded, but to me it also feels more like a gadget on wheels. The 2018 one feels like a proper car first.

Funny thing is, I didn’t appreciate it this much when we first got it. But now, every time I drive it, I like it a little more. Maybe it’s nostalgia, maybe it’s just how well the car has aged — but if I’m being completely honest, I still find our 2018 Creta more charming than the new one.

Anyone else here with an older Creta who secretly prefers it over the current model?
