Any reason NOT to get a Fenix 8 at $850 now?

Any reason NOT to get a Fenix 8 at $850 now?

Garmin’s Memorial Day sale dropped the Fenix 8 from around $1000 to $850. I’ve been eyeing this watch for a while.

I know there’s no definitive answer, but is there any reason not to buy a roughly 2-year-old watch at this price point? I mainly care about durability, fitness/outdoor features, and long-term value rather than having the newest tech every year.

Thank you!

Kaiser Permanente messed up my progressive lenses? Need advice

Two years ago I had my first pair of progressive lenses prescribed by Kaiser, but I got the glasses made at Costco and the experience was great.

Two months ago, I decided to get both the eye exam and glasses directly through Kaiser. That turned into a nightmare.

My distance vision improved, but my near vision became much worse. I can’t read the text on a microwave button from two feet away, can’t clearly see the number on my driver’s license, and reading documents or a computer monitor is more difficult than my old pair of eyeglasses. No matter how I move my head, I can’t find the “sweet spot” that progressive lenses are supposed to have. Honestly, it feels more like a single-vision lens sold at a progressive lens price.

I paid over $400 for these and somehow the experience is much worse than the cheaper pair I got at Costco.

Does this sound more like:

  • a bad prescription?
  • incorrect lens measurements at the optical shop?
  • poor lens quality?
  • or just needing more adjustment time?

What should my next step be? Go back for a recheck? Ask them to remake the lenses? I’m pretty frustrated and not sure what to do.

**Update: thank you everyone for stopping my overthinking about requesting a follow-up service for my eyeglasses.

I visited Kaiser today (thankfully only 5 minutes from my home). The optician was awesome and immediately figured out that there was virtually no reading prescription in the lenses. They’re going to redo them for me.

Also, the optician/salesperson who helped me on the first day only gave me a grocery store-style receipt. Today was the first time I received a proper receipt showing the actual order details. I also just noticed their return policy mentions refunds within 30 days of pickup.

Capital One gradually moving some cards from Visa/Mastercard to Discover, do you still consider it a good long-term international travel card setup?

The no foreign transaction fees are great, but Discover acceptance overseas still seems weaker than Visa/Mastercard, especially for smaller merchants and international travel. Having a reliable card while traveling internationally is pretty important to me.

Curious what frequent travelers here think.
