DINK couple wants to move to Oxford, UK from Tokyo, Japan

for context, DINK means Dual Income, No Kids..

Ive been in Oxford for about a month for Christmas and NY holidays and I liked the vibe there. Very international, diverse and most people are friendly. While living in Japan is nice, safe and convenient, it can get boring. Also this is a homogeneous country and as a non-Japanese, I want to move to a city (or even sub urbs) which has friendlier people, great startup (business) community, international and English is the main language.

London is also great but I feel safer in Oxford. During my time in UK, I havent explored other cities so if there are other cities with more job opportunities but same vibe with Oxford, less busy than London (but not too far from the city / busy area)

so how do we move there? I also wonder if will you have other nice cities to suggest...

both me and my husband are in tech.

I am currently working for a global IT company but actually I would rather have my own business (thus I would like to move somewhere with great startup community or at least somewhere that has good support for small businesses) and not be employed at all. If me being employed is one way to move, then sure, I will take it for may be 2 - 3 years until I get settled. I can work in any of these fields - digital marketing (whether be it ads or managing enterprise marketing tech like Salesforce), IT support, web design and development, 3d modeling & 3d printing

My husband is the real beast in tech - computer vision, robotics. How's the robotics in UK?

Our current income and rent (converted in GBP) in Tokyo:

me - £ 40,000 (annual, gross)

husband - £ 46,000 (annual, gross)

apartment rent - £ 650 (monthly, 60 sqm, 2 bedrooms, relatively low cost in Tokyo as its partly goverment owned)

(are we gonna get the same or higher if we move?)

If you are British or you are someone who managed to move to UK, would love to hear your opinions and story :)

Have you ever used Payload Ecommerce for a client project?

Hello folks, I am currently testing Payload ecommerce and Im having thoughts... biggest concern is its in beta and looks like there is no active community around (specifically in ecommerce - though I might be wrong in this one)

For background, below are the reasons why I am leaning on Payload right now:

  • client doesnt want to use and pay for Shopify subscription
  • freedom on front end and loads fast - thus we decided to go for headless route
  • should be able to handle more than 200 products. each product has 2 variants categories and more than 10 to choose from (product is curtains - there are many sizes available and customer can choose fabric type, therefore variants are massive)
  • client's vps is 2GB ram with already have some low traffic static Astro sites on it (client is willing to consider upgrading or having the ecommerce site in separate vps if i prove that its really required)

When I researched using AI, given the current VPS ram, the suggested site built is Payload + Next.js but its admin dashboard seems not so intuitive for the client and I have doubts on its reliability

Im thinking whether to test Medusa or headless Woocommerce. If admin dashboard will be more intuitive than payload plus if its not in beta and has an active community, I can convince the client to upgrade the VPS or have it on a separate VPS so the VPS limitation mentioned above is not really a hard requirement...

If you're in my shoes, what would you use?

Since you use Claude Code now, have you moved away your websites from Wordpress to web frameworks now (Astro and the likes)

If you are a web developer or WYSIWYG user (wordpress + elementor), i wonder if you are now moving away from wordpress? because technically even minor edits, its just one prompt away to claude code.

im curious about how you guys are now creating websites...

and also which framework do you usually use with Claude Code

Migrate Wordpress to Astro

I am a wp developer whos now moving on to vibe coding using Claude.

Tried Claude with Wordpress and its just slow. I felt like if im vibe coding anyway, I dont need a WYSIWYG page builder (i used to develop with Oxygen Builder)

MAybe im just too excited to move on to Claude code as Im also building web app projects with it.

Is moving away from Wordpress to Astro make sense?

The website in question here is a company site, improvements, additional pages will be added gradually (thats why it was built in wordpress as I can use oxygen builder templates i created before to speed up the updates/creation of additional pages)

Or if not Astro, would you recommend something else?

If you are an "employed" entrepreneur, does company or team culture matter to you a lot?

If you are an "employed" entrepreneur, does company or team culture matter to you a lot? or you don't care, as long as there is enough freedom for you to work on your entrepreneurship journey?

background, Im employed (full time remote) though there are times im being called to go to office, at the same time i run both services and products businesses. i know, i know many will say im not entrepreneur enough for not making the leap, but im just being practical. my work is fully remote i have some flexibility to work on my business while also working on the job itself. it also pays above average. i havent reached to the point that my business is so big that i need to quit the job to be able to handle the work.. esp now with AI.

so, back to my question. while my work sounds like a cash cow, the work itself and the people around are the downside. like if you gonna have meals with my coworkers, topics are just gossip, not about things to learn about like AI, finance etc. (I compared with my spouse who works in a startup, and their lunch time topics are totally different - claude/AI, things to learn, sometimes even history, culture). I tried once to talk about stocks but no one followed that convo and felt im in the wrong place. But if its gossip, everyone participates. And the work is not about solving complex problems, more like following someone so that they protect their ego. if things gets difficult, youll get dismissive and condensending responses and being blamed even for the things they forgot (for failing to remind them). i keep a low profile and even being dumb as i dont wanna get more work as i dont aim for high position/promotion (im into my businesses). i just think at least i dont depend on this job for career and improving myself.

but somehow, there are times, like right now, makes me question, will it be helpful to find a better workplace with an environment that would help me grow as a person? but sacrifice the freedom and reduced time for my businesses?

or i just need to be headstrong and shutdown the workplace BS in my mind and keep my focus on my businesses until i can quit?

if you are an employed entrepreneur, how was your journey? have experienced similar experience like this?

Connecting Claude to WordPress - Is NovaMira only the good option?

Ive been developing WordPress sites using Oxygen Builder (so I am not totally a no-code person) but now that I subscribed to Claude Max (because of other reasons) I want to maximize my usage and also try to develop a wp site using it.

Ive been searching the internet how people connect wordpress to claude and its always novamira.. Im not sure if its really good or its just the influencer marketing (as Ive seen them being used by wp dev influencers)

I have local wp here and havent used Wordpress Studio.
Will it work if I just make the localwp folder accessible to claude code and let it scan the wp folder structure and prompt from there? or i really need to make an extra effort to set it up and use plugin such as novamira?

For context, i dont need claude to deploy the site for me. I just want to use it to do the design and content, once the site is finished locally, Ill deploy it to my vps.

will appreciate if you can share your workflows too.. and the finished site :)

Filling web forms and uploading photos using chrome need max plan?

Uploading photo, filing up web forms (product description etc) using chrome extension + claude cowork

Currently subscribed to pro and its annoying that i only use it for about 1-2 hrs and need to wait 3-5 hours for rate limit to reset.

I dont consider my task difficult but maybe it is?

I have md files with clear instructions, i have downloaded source code (html) of the website wherein it writes product descriptions (so it knows the website structure and wont take time to navigate) but i only publish 3 listings at most during a session.

Do i really need max for this?

Or any tips to use tokens efficiently?

Dividends as passive income in Japan

If you’re earning a lot of dividends in your investments in Japan, what’s your strategy?

Are they in NISA? Or they are in taxable accounts?

What are the stocks / mutual funds that gives you dividends?

Ill start:

Mutual funds:
- global AI fund
- tracers

Stocks:
- jr east
- mufj

~planning to buy JT (japan tabaco)

*i didn’t bought these stocks for dividends alone but they are also earning me dividends.

I have growth and long term investments like voo, vt (from emaxis and rakuten) but wont include it as i wanna stick with dividend topic.

Whats yours?
