What is in the Nem? SOTA

Spoilers for shadows of the apt up as far as “heirs of the blade”

I’m currently reading the air war and it seems that the books won’t be answering my question any time soon so here I am turning to Reddit for answers

Basically, what is that creature spotted by the wasps in book 7 while drilling for oil in the nem? I guess it could just be an unexplained kinden or monster but I feel like I’m missing something?

Is this something that ever gets explained, if so just tell me to keep reading! Or is there some hint or explanation that I’ve missed.

It just stands out to me as quite odd, as the storyline in the nem wraps up very abruptly in book 7 without any real payoff imo, so would love to hear what others think, theories welcome!

Warhammer scene in Edinburgh?

Hi all!

I’m moving to Edinburgh from Dublin in a few months to start my PhD at Edinburgh uni. I’m a huge warhammer nerd here at home, so really want to jump into the community in Edinburgh!

Mostly just asking if there are any big groups for warhammer 40K or age of sigmar, or any local game stores/ venues that hold warhammer nights or events and any info about them.

Would also love to know about any warhammer discord servers that are open to help meet more nerds in Edinburgh!

Thanks!

Rent guarantor as a PhD student

Hi! I’m moving to Edinburgh in September to start my PhD, but I am very confused about rent guarantors and such.

For context, I’m from Ireland and am moving on my own. I have a long term partner who will be moving 6-12 months later who will be on a professional salary, whereas I will be on a PhD stipend

As far as I understand, I don’t need a guarantor to live in uni accommodation but they are very expensive, so are there options for a guarantor if I want to live in a rented apartment?

Primarily looking for anything from other foreign PhD students or anyone who knows more about it

My main questions are:

Does my guarantor have to be in the UK, my parents in Ireland could act as one but would that be possible?

What other options are there?

Questions about EU law and sanctions pt.2

Hello again,

This is a follow up to my previous post, regarding the European laws on the subject of unilateral sanctions.

To summarise, Ireland recently held a vote to impose sanctions on Israel, which was voted down by the incumbent government parties.

I wrote to my local representatives to ask why they voted in such a manner and they cited the EU Israel trade agreement and eu trade law to say that the ability to pose sanctions on a country are not within the remit of an eu member state and member states can only implement UN and EU approved sanction regimes.

After researching this further, I have seen that two European countries have imposed sanctions on Israel, namely Spain and Slovenia in the form of an arms embargo (including dual use technologies)

My questions thus are as follows:

  1. From my understanding, eu member countries cannot impose economic sanctions without EU approval, so do arms embargoes fall under this category or are they not covered by this set of laws?

  2. Ireland does not export traditional arms, but would it still be feasible to call for an arms embargo despite that Ireland only truly exports dual use technologies

  3. From my reading, other actions such as travel bans, cultural boycotts like the cancellation of sports events are in the remit of eu member states, is this true?

I am attempting to gather all the information I can before I return to my local representative to respond to their previous message

And once again, I’m not trying to start a political discussion about this topic, just looking for clarification on the law as someone poorly versed in this realm, thank you!!!

AITA for quitting my Bar-back job because I found another job

So for context:

I’ve been on a gap year from university, starting a PhD in September. I’m currently living at home, and have been looking for work to save for the future. Since last year I have been working the odd gig job but haven’t gotten anything permanent.

My parents offered to continue my uni allowance 50€/ week that pays for my transport and some spending money while I try to save.

About a month ago I got a job as a barback/glass collector whatever, who works in a pub collecting glasses and cleaning tables and such. I absolutely hate the job and the place I work but it was one of the only places I could get some work. I hoped they’d give me more shifts so I could save but they only ever offer me 7-close on Saturdays and occasionally Sunday mornings (which are illegal as there’s only like 8 hours between the shifts)

2 weeks ago I got a job as a swim teacher where I make double minimum wage, and right now I’m only able to get Saturdays 2-7. Hence, for the last two weeks I’ve been finishing one, and having to get someone to drive me to the other job while I change and eat in the car.

I told my dad I handed in my notice to quit the pub job and he’s outraged at me. I told him that it’s not worth the hassle it causes me to go from one to the other, especially when I’ve gotten better employment in a job I already enjoy.

But he is super angry with me now, saying there’s no reason I can’t do both, which frankly I think is ridiculous.

I’m privileged enough to be in a position where I don’t need to work back to back shifts in odd jobs and accept that I will have a bit less of savings since I’m missing out on a few hours of work.

As well as this, I’m also still looking for weekday work to supplement this, none of which is a part of my career, which starts for real in September?

AITA? I think it’s reasonable that I decided that my comfort was worth quitting the pub job? He is currently raging at me and won’t talk to me, just calling me names and lazy.

Idk, I think I’ve been reasonable but idk if I’m not seeing this right

Question about european trade law and unilateral sanctions

Hello,

I am writing this post to seek some clarification on the legality of EU member states to impose sanctions on non-EU nations.

Recently, my country, Ireland voted down a resolution to impose unilateral sanctions on Israel, and after liasing with my local representative, he claims that such action would violate EU trade law.

However, in 1987, Ireland imposed complete import sanctions on Apartheid South Africa, despite being a member of the EU at the time, and was never challenged in the EU courts over this decision.

Im not looking to have a debate over the merits of such actions against Israel, I am just curious to know if there is a reason that one was possible and not the other, given that the Irish government has been known to lie about issues regarding EU law to deflect blame.

Thanks in advance!!!
