Group Chat for incoming students

Hello all, I made a post a couple of weeks ago about setting up a group chat for new students starting in September. We've got quite a few people already if anyone wants to join. I'm an Edinburgh graduate and I live in Edinburgh so more than happy to answer any questions about the university and city more generally.

We're mainly postgrads, but all are welcome and if we get enough undergrads I can set up a seperate chat for them as well.

Feel free to message me or comment on this post for a link :)

UoE postgrad – uni acco or private accommodation?

Hi everyone,
Incoming postgrad for September here and trying to figure out whether I should go for university accommodation or private accommodation before I accidentally become homeless. 😅
I also strongly value having my own bathroom, so I’d love to know:
-Is university accommodation worth it for postgrads?
-Are ensuite rooms common, or are they difficult to get?
-If you had to do it all over again, would you choose university accommodation or rent privately?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. 😊

Accommodation help

I am an incoming undergrad student for Artificial Intelligence and am really stuck on which accommodation to choose. I want self catered, nice room with an en suite but also really sociable. I was liking the look of Salisbury Court, but seen some mixed things. Thoughts?

Accommodation help for 27 year old undergrad

I was just wondering if there were any halls which had the rep of having more mature students? Ill be arriving in September to start an undergrad in Chinese and history after a few years out due to crohns, and I’m understandably rather anxious about the social side of things.

any recs would be welcome- just no local nursing homes pls.

Live near class or live in town?

I'll be doing a physics masters at UofE this Fall. The physics campus seems like it's all the way down South in the King's Buildings campus in Blackford. There are several private flats there for rent, reasonably priced. But in your experience, is it better to live more centrally and take a bus to class? How are the bus routes between the center of town and the King's Buildings campus?

Is the transcript enough?

I have received a conditional offer, and I understand that, to make it unconditional, I need to provide my honors degree diploma. I have already received my final transcript; however, my diploma will not be issued for approximately another month. Since I would like to apply for accommodation and obtain my CAS as soon as possible, I wanted to ask whether submitting my final transcript alone would be sufficient to make my offer unconditional for now, or whether both the diploma and the transcript are required. Have you faced such an issue? I have already asked the admission team, but it takes some time for them to respond

Can you live in Edinburgh with £900 after rent?

So I'll be spending about £850 on a shared flat (O'shea north)., and I'll be left with £900 pounds a month. I know Edinburgh is expensive so I'm kinda worried...

Accepted EC but not allowed to progress to dissert

Hi everyone,
I’m an international postgraduate taught student at the University of Edinburgh.
I’ve recently been told that because my average mark was not high enough to progress to the dissertation stage, I can only receive a Postgraduate Diploma instead of continuing to complete the master’s degree.
However, earlier this semester I applied for Exceptional Circumstances for two coursework assessments, and both EC applications were accepted. As far as I know, I have not yet received a clear final EC outcome, such as whether I can resubmit/resit those affected assessments.
I’m quite confused about what I should do next. My main questions are:
What should I do now to give myself the best chance of progressing to the dissertation stage?
What possible outcomes might I face in this situation?
Do taught postgraduate students at Edinburgh usually have any opportunity to resit or resubmit coursework after accepted EC?
Should I contact my Programme Director/Cohort Lead, the Advice Place, or start preparing an academic appeal?
Any advice from people who have been through something similar, especially at UoE, would be really appreciated.
Thank you!

Getting my prescriptions there as an American

I will be doing a one-year MSc there starting this September.
I have ADHD, I am medicated for it (methylphenidate), and from what information I have managed to gather about the NHS, registering with a local GP would have a wait time longer than the duration of my degree. Since I already have a diagnosis, I'm hoping the process would be easier, but also some people say that sometimes UK practitioners do not accept ADHD diagnoses from the US since they're 'handed out too liberally'.
I suppose my question is if anyone else has gone through this process and can share some advices? What exactly should I do and how long should I expect to wait for? Please help, I'm not sure how I would survive my degree unmedicated, and a private clinic is way beyond my budget

Direct entry to second year

Hi, I'm considering applying to Edinburgh for neuroscience, but the length of the course being 4 years is a slight issue because of the extra tuition fees and living costs. I have the grades to be considered for direct entry to year 2, but does anyone have any advice on the pros and cons? I think I would be motivated to try and keep on top of workload, but I don't want to lose out on social life or struggle more making friends if I join in year 2. If anyone has any advice on how bad the workload is (especially in relation to neuro/biomed), how hard the transition is, and social life for direct entry it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

LLM Uni Edinburgh, submission deadlines

Hi everyone,

I have a quick question about the LLM at the University of Edinburgh.

From what I understand, each module/course is assessed by an essay that you submit at the end of the course. On the university website, I could only find that the essays are due at the end of the semester.
Since the teaching period is followed by the holidays (apart from the exam week in December), I was wondering whether the essays are usually due during the holiday period or whether they need to be submitted before the holidays start.

I’d really appreciate it if anyone could clarify this. Thank you!

Housing Search

Im moving to Edinburgh for school in September 2026 and I plan on visiting a couple of weeks before term starts to find somewhere to live. I am unable to stay in student housing so I have to find private housing somewhere nearby. I am wondering if anyone has any recommendations on areas I should stay that are affordable and safe for someone unfamiliar with the area (from USA).

I would like to avoid staying in a hotel while I look for housing just because it will be more expensive but im not sure where to look for private housing. As of now I am looking on Hostel World and google.

I would really appreciate some advice, thank you!

Accommodation Recommendations

I'm a prospective postgraduate student for the 2026/2027 academic year. I noticed that all of my classes will be held at the King's Buildings campus, likely five days a week.

I'm currently looking for suitable accommodation and would appreciate your advice. Could you recommend any university or private accommodations that are close to King's Buildings? If living nearby isn't possible, could you also advise on areas with convenient bus connections to the campus?

Best towns to live in outside Edinburgh?

I’m a US American who will be beginning a postgrad degree at UoE this fall and will be looking for a private rental (pets). What are the best towns to look into, outside of Edinburgh, for a student to commute to campus (I’m thinking <40min commute but let me know if that’s unreasonable).

EDIT: Not looking for cheaper rent, just trying to cast a broader net because I’ll be moving in August and am heeding the warning that housing becomes especially short during that time.

Going out in Edinburgh

Hello everyone, I [24F] just moved to Edinburgh and I want to explore the nightlife. So I was wondering if there are any nice clubs or lounges or something like that or are there any events that are going to happen soon?
