Pub quiz team or chill

Basically the title. Is anyone having a regular pub quiz team I could join? Or are people up to start one? There are plenty around the main campus, like at West inc Records.
Its a hard moment of the term to make new friends, but I’m taking my shot.
Also interested in chess, gym, photography, and hiking if someone is up to doing things or has a group I can join.

Is the UKRI stipend (21k) sufficient?

I will most likely be staying in a dorm (about 8k - 10k). Is the remainder sufficient to live in Edinburgh, including food, recreation, etcetera?

Torn on whether i should firm Edi

I’d be doing Maths and Econ MA at Edi. Student life isn’t that big of a decider for me as I think I’d be happy no matter where I go, main concern is career prospects for finance (front office, probably asset management). Could anyone give any input?

Friendly annual reminder to check your email

Make sure you are checking your email now and over the summer. As much as we love hearing from our students they are sorry for interrupting us during summer vacation, we are not, in fact, on vacation. We never stop! As you are wrapping up your exams we are just getting started with Board of Examiners meetings and progression and awards. We are preparing for enrolments for our continuing students, and prepping to welcome our new Year 1 cohorts. We are getting things ready for the resit exam diet and progression meetings for those that did not progress. And all through this we will be sending you emails. Not reading your email is not an excuse for missing a deadline.

Enrolment collections are happening now!

The University wide deadline for exceptional circumstances is 25 May!

Deadlines for publication of final marks and awards can be found here!

I think that covers a lot of what you'll have been emailed lately. Pay attention!

Switching from biochemistry to chemistry

Hello!
I have a conditional offer to study Biological Sciences (Biochemistry). I Initially wanted to apply to just chemistry but I thought you needed maths AA HL to do that and I had AI HL. Either it changed or I misread it back then, but seems like either maths is fine for HL. Is it easy to switch courses? It seems like it should be possible especially because the classes are in the same college. If I can, when should I message them? Should I do it before or after I get exam results?
Thanks!

Parking permits at King's Buildings

I'm starting a PhD at Edinburgh in a couple of months and wanted to hear about people's experience with parking permits as I've heard it's very difficult to obtain one. I'm looking for a place to live in the Borders as I'm keen to be a bit out of the city. I'll be at the King's Buildings 3-4 days a week and looking to drive in most of the time. I'm mainly keen for a permit to be able to charge my car (EV), but also park.

Accommodation Advice

Joining Edi this year, looking for advice on accommodation (any insights welcome).

I'm looking for somewhere quiet, close to nature, friendly and not too snobby.

Ensuite and double bed would be nice, bur compromises have to be made somewhere lol

Starting at Edinburgh in Sept — advice?

Hey everyone,

I’m starting MA Economics & Politics at Edinburgh this September and thought I’d ask for some honest opinions/advice from current students (or recent grads).
Bit of background about me:
Originally from Glasgow
Staying in Salisbury Court for accommodation
Really excited to start — I visited and genuinely liked both departments, and everyone I met from incoming cohorts seemed great.

I had a few questions though:

1. Economics & Politics @ Edinburgh
Would love to hear from anyone doing Economics, Politics, joint honours, or PPE. What’s the actual experience like? How are the departments in practice, the teaching quality, workload, lecturers/tutorials, and just the general student body/vibe? I got a really good impression at offer holder events but curious what it’s actually like once you’re there.

2. General atmosphere of the uni
What’s the overall vibe at Edinburgh? I’ve heard everything from “super social and loads going on” to “people can be a bit independent/cliquey” — what’s been your experience?

3. Careers service + student support
How useful are the careers services, internships support, CV help, networking events etc? Also wondering what student support is like generally if you need academic/personal support.

4. Stereotypes 😭
Are any of the Edinburgh stereotypes actually true? (The posh/Home Counties crowd, internationals sticking together, Edinburgh students being very career-focused, PPE/econ stereotypes, humanities vs STEM divides etc.)

5. Societies
What societies would people recommend joining? Open to literally anything — debating, politics, volunteering, sport, nightlife/social, career-related, random niche ones… just want to meet people and make the most of first year.
Would appreciate any brutally honest opinions/advice — really looking forward to September :)

Failing elective module

hello may I know what happens if you fail an elective module in year 1 and if you won’t be able to re sit it in August? A little worried since I genuinely don’t think I’ll be able to pass the module and I’ve already booked tickets to come back from my home country in September.

how does anyone afford a master’s program here

i was accepted into a 1-year master’s program at the university of edinburgh and because i am an international student, my tuition is ~43k USD. my program offers a scholarship that would knock a maximum of ~13k USD off my tuition, but regardless I would have to accept financial aid for the rest. the US gives a max of 22500 USD to grad students, so the rest would be from a private loan (i can’t afford to fork over the rest). however, the edinburgh financial aid office recently sent me this document detailing all of the likely expenses i would encounter in ONE YEAR as a student. how is it possible to ever go to school here as a US student without financial support? is this a rich people school? this is insane!

Riego street or East newington Place?

Hello, I’m only given these 2 options, I tried googling but there weren’t much info or reviews. Hoping to get some insights from current students since school accommodation team isn’t responding & I’m panicking since I’ve to make a decision soon.

I also prefer quieter areas, and am studying vet med, they didn’t say where my campus will be but a quick google search shows me both places are about 10-12km away.

Does anybody know if there’s a difference paying in lump sum and paying annually? Are there any cancellation fee I should be aware of?

Many many thanks!!

Im worried about a delay in starting my masters

I have a conditional offer for an msc at edinburgh, which I will meet the criteria for once i get the grades from my dis and final exams- but I had to EC an exam to the august resit period. I emailed Edinburgh uni and told them about the situation and they asked when I'll get the grade and that I need it before the 14th. Ill get my grade for that exam at the end of sept, but im meant to start my MSc on the 14th of sept (I have told them this but they havent replied yet, so naturally im worried). I won't need the grade from that exam to get the 2:1, it's only like 4 % of my course. Does anyone have any experience with this in particular? Is it be possible to get a current transcript and send that to them showing I have passed everything, and that Ill show them the last exam when I get the result? I really dont want to delay my start or take a year out because of this.

Mature student experience at edi?

I'm transferring to Edinburgh from Cambridge, and I was wondering what mature student life was like at Edi, especially for those in their late 20s? I'll be 27 when I begin my first year in Chinese and History, so I really wanted to gauge the vibes as I found being a mature student in Cam quite lonely and this was even with living in a mature college. The mature student society at Cam, while active, seemed heavily targeted towards those 35+ so I was hoping that Edi catered more for younger mature students. For context, I'm English and I'll be living off-site (but close to central) with my partner. TIA <3

Did anyone who applied to MSc Statistics with Data Science get an offer. In which round did you apply? My application is stuck in Being Processed and although I know the results for round 2 come out on May 31 I just wanted to know if anyone got in.

UoE Halls v Private Accom ||Postrgad

Hi everyone, I’m an incoming Master’s student at the University of Edinburgh and have been allotted O’Shea North. I’m currently deciding between staying there or choosing a private accommodation with better facilities and overall comfort. The main thing keeping me inclined towards university accommodation is the sense of belonging, community, and networking with fellow UoE students, especially as a postgraduate student new to the city.

I wanted to ask people who’ve stayed at O’Shea or other UoE halls if the social/residence life events and community aspect are genuinely active and meaningful in practice, or if it is more something that sounds better on paper than it actually is.

Anyone worried about the marking boycott

Hi, I am an international student finishing my studies here

I fully support the staffs and I genuinely think the uni really need to work on its finance and admin

But as an international student, I feel a bit worried about the boycott possibly leading to just a certificate of completion in July....which is really not ideal for anyone but esp international students

Any internation students worried about the visa and graduate job?

I hope the uni pays our staffs and let me graduate properly this summer.....:(

is pollock halls really that bad????

hi, i am joining uni of ed as an exchange student this sep, and im a second year undergrad student primarily considering joining pollock halls as it is catered!

- however have heard some horror stories about the people there, and was wondering if people could share their thoughts?

- also have heard that it is mainly 18 year olds, do you think it will be weird coming as a second year?

- lastly within pollock halls, which are better than others?

- if not pollock halls, where else should i stay? is self-catered that much of a burden/that hard to maintain (being someone whos kinda lazy lol)

thank youuuu
