Thoughts from Japanese people on “Foreign Words”?

As I’m going through my learning (still only N5 right now) I’m noticing more and more of the borrowed words. I wondered what the opinions were from Japanese people about this, and whether they’re happy with them or would rather make new “Japanese” words? I quite enjoy seeing how they become “japanified” though.

No judgment either way, I’m just curious!

FMUs are the bane of my life

Long story short, I have a complex aircraft model that I need to convert to an FMU.

Everything worked in R2022a (although it had its issues), and when I ran the FMU alongside the simulink model the dynamic behaviour matched exactly.

When I moved up to R2025b things changed. It no longer matches and diverges quite a lot. I’ve tried absolutely everything to figure it out, but I’ve run out of ideas.

Has something significant changed between the versions that I’ve missed? I run it in a test harness with the same configuration reference used when creating the FMU so I expected them to give the same results?

Ordered a program from eBay, had a nice surprise

So I wanted to have a piece of the original Miss Saigon, since it’s my favourite musical and I completely adore Lea Salonga. It was a bundle of programs for various casts, including the original west end and broadway productions.

To my surprise, I opened them and they had been signed by the original cast members 😱 admittedly, a few are dedications to whoever owned the programs but I honestly don’t care. Just knowing that they were once in the hands of Lea Salonga and Claire Moore is insane to me. Thank you whoever sold me them!!!

When did the “modern” musical first arrive

I think we can agree that there’s been a complete shift in the way musicals are written, and the style in which they’re sung.

At what point did this shift start to happen, do you think? Is there a patient zero that’s considered the turning point?

Edit: I should have been more specific! By modern musical I mean the shift into more of a “belting” style, particularly from women parts.

Streaming Tony Awards in UK

I know this isn’t strictly West End related, but you’re all more likely to know the answer than those in the broadway sub.

So yeah, anyone know where I can stream last nights show? Either through regular channels or… other ways…

Positivity - I'm giving Ben/CIJ a chance.

I've not been a regular CIJ user, but have been subscribed for a number of months. I totally agree with everyone around what a loss Yuki is, but she isn't the only one who can create videos. We've got 2 years for CIJ to upload more videos, and Ben has said that more people will be coming on board.

You do what you want with your money, I'll not tell you what you should do. However, I do think that people are panicking a bit over something that might not actually be as bad as they think.

I've seen so many complaints (and I've made the same ones) that there's so little options for Japanese input out there, now we get Yuki uploading her own videos PLUS whatever new content Ben puts onto CIJ. This could actually be a good thing, and I'm going to stick with my subscription to find out. Cancelling/asking for a refund is going to seriously impact Ben's ability to replace what CIJ is losing in Yuki's videos, and it seems like an amicable split so there's no need to take sides.

So yeah, I just wanted to try and add a positive note to this whole thing. I'd hate to see us lose what could be a really good resource over something that isn't really a big deal.

Lunch ideas that don’t take long to make

Hi,

I’m gluten intolerant, so can have a small amount of gluten but bread is unfortunately not an option. I’m gutted because honestly bread is my favourite thing in the world 😩

Anyway, I’ve been making a lunch of rice mixed with various seeds, nuts, feta cheese etc but it takes too long to make and I’m getting sick of making it!!

I wondered if anyone has ideas of alternatives? My requirements/preferences are:

  1. I’m not on a diet and actually struggle to get all my calories sometimes, so preferably not too low calorie.
  2. I’m vegetarian, so no meat.

All the lunch recipes I see online that claim they’re quick are lying to me! So I’m hoping the experts might have something up their sleeves that they don’t mind sharing :)

Thanks

Edit: I should have said that I generally make my meals the night before but am open to prepping a few days worth. I also can’t stand GF bread 🫠

What’s going on with the new Les Mis album?

I just saw this on twitter, but I must have missed something. What’s going on with the album/why are we mad at James for being excited about being on a cast album?

Stupid question. The E-Hybrid Display confuses me

I bought the 2025 e-hybrid recently and loving it so far. However I’ve found the documentation irritating and unclear.

The green bar in the picture seems to start about half way when I get in the car in the morning. I’ve assumed it’s one of the batteries charging but I can’t figure out which one!

Can anyone explain what this is telling me please and whether it should be draining that quickly?
