Why do people assume Hürrem ruined Mahidevran and Süleyman’s relationship?
While rewatching the first episode for the thousandth time I’ve realized that Süleyman already seems fairly detached from Mahidevran when she arrives with Mustafa, before Hürrem has even entered his chambers or had any kind of relationship with him. He’s clearly happy to see his son, but his interaction with Mahidevran is noticeably more distant.
Even before she arrives, he is already summoning other concubines, like Ayşe, to his chambers, and the show establishes this as a normal part of the sultan’s household.
So I guess I’ve never really understood the interpretation that Mahidevran and Süleyman would have been perfectly happy together if Hürrem had never appeared. The show makes it clear that Süleyman’s relationships with other women were already a normal part of his household, and he also seems rather detached from Mahidevran before Hürrem ever enters the picture.
Mahidevran could absolutely have loved him and been hurt by his attention to other women while still understanding that this was the reality of her position. In fact, I honestly think that would have made their relationship much more interesting than portraying Hürrem as the thing that essentially destroyed an otherwise happy relationship.
