Rules for reps

Reps are good, but only under two conditions:

  1. You can actually afford the real thing. Yes, I know my uber driver can't afford a Daytona.

  2. The rep is of such good quality that even if you are holding it side by side with the real thing it is nearly impossible to tell which is "better."

At that point you have to be out of your mind to buy the real thing instead of just investing it or spending the money on a vacation or other experience. I'm looking at you, submariner owners.

Making an AHK-CU Serum

I'm super curious about trying topical AHK-CU but the premade products are laughably expensive. Has anyone used the lyophilized powder to make a serum at home?

Rolex's brand image is awful

Rolex makes some great watches. I love the Datejust. The OP, Milgauss, and Air-King are all really nice too.

But Rolex's most popular watch is the Submariner. It's big, ugly, dumb, and tacky. Most of the colorways are tasteless.

It's a perfect metaphor for the modern Rolex owner: money with no class. Ironically, most Rolex owners are buying them because they want to be associated with the brand, but they don't realize that practically everyone else's perception of the Rolex brand is "purestrain douche."

When I was buying a watch, I was torn between a Speedmaster or a Datejust. What tipped the scales to Omega was remembering this fact: every Rolex is a tool watch because 9 out of 10 Rolex owners are tools, and I just feel sorry for the 10th guy for having to be associated with them.

Rolex was built as a marketing company, and for decades it successfully marketed itself as the go-to watch of presidents, divers, pilots, James Bond, etc. People you wanted to be like. Now no one wants to "be like" a Rolex guy.

I don't know that this has gotten through to the company itself, or if they care. I think they just see the demand outstripping supply and shrug. I don't know how they would undo this damage.

It's a shame, because I really do think their product is excellent.

On the bright side, all this makes the humiliation that Rolex ADs have started putting prospective buyers through hilarious.

Any watch over $1000 is a luxury watch

Earlier today I saw a facebook reel of two guys talking about how Omega is a "mid-tier" brand. The Acquired guys even tried to argue that Rolex isn't a luxury watch. The argument is that luxury starts at Patek and up.

These guys need to put down the crack pipes. Luxury isn't a dickwaving "prestige tiers" contest where the goalposts move depending on the players. Luxury starts where necessity ends. Any $10 quartz watch puts the time on your wrist. The marginal utility to formal dress wear practically evaporates beyond the Seiko level unless you are in a room full of watch dorks. The benefits are almost totally intangible.

Longines, Tag, etc., maybe even Tissot...all luxury.

A different kind of celebration

In December, my dad's 11th cancer surgery ended in horrifying complications. First his brain filled with air, then with fluid, then he developed a brain infection. He spent over a month in the ICU in a state of near-total delirium. He survived a few close brushes with death, but mentally he'll never again be the father I knew. At least I was there, and I got to spend a few days with him and shake his hand before it all happened, even if he'll never remember it.

My days involved taking my mom to and from the hospital, consoling her, trying to stay on top of all the medical and legal affairs of it all, then working until 2 or 3 am. I only took a single day off the whole time. At performance review, I was denied a promotion that had been previously pledged anyway for specious reasons.

One night, after getting back from the hospital and sinking into a chair with my work laptop, I received a curt two-sentence text from the woman I had been dating dumping me. We had been texting every day through all of this; it was completely out of the blue. I never got an explanation. It was the first time in a while I had felt hope about heading towards marriage.

Once my dad was finally released in mid-January, and I felt comfortable enough heading back to New York, I immediately came down with the worst illness I'd ever had in my life. I was essentially trapped in my apartment for six weeks, and by the end just breathing became laborious. They ultimately pumped me full of methylprednisone until I finally started recovering.

This was the worst three months of my life. So I decided it was time for some drastic measures.

I took two weeks off (fuck it, won't make a difference right?) In Seoul I teamed up with vinyl bar goers to drain shots of tequila while trying to exchange goofy stories through the language barrier. In Tokyo I spent a night in an izakaya with a gorgeous flight attendant and tasted Okinawan sake with a documentary director and his violinist girlfriend. I read a biography in a secluded cafe in Yongsan, contemplated cherry blossoms in Nakameguro and Ueno, hit up vintage stores in Shimokitazawa, and walked enough to nearly wear through a new pair of shoes. In San Francisco I rented a Porsche Boxster and ripped up the coast, climbing Mt. Tam, carving through the Muir Woods, and stopping at a beach to watch the sunset.

When I got back, I decided it was time to celebrate surviving the longest, shittiest chapter of my life. As a reminder to myself that time is always moving forward, I reached into my savings and bought myself my grail watch.

Happy Tuesday

Opinions on the De Ville Chronometer?

I personally think this is a cool alternative to a Speedmaster but the lady disagrees

An AP Rep is a better buy than a Royal Pop

The people who are buying Royal Pops are doing it to put the AP name in their pocket (or on their wrist with a strap.) The joke is that the reps are probably a better value for money. The latest reps are some of the most impressive reps there are - almost NWBIG - versus the Royal Pop which is $420 for a weird plastickey pocketwatch plus whatever the straps are gonna go for. 99.9% of people don’t know what an AP is, so it doesn’t have the same kind of poser issues created by a fake Rolex. People are out there getting peppersprayed over the Royal Pop…christ, just buy a rep!

Everyone who would have bought a rep bought a Moonswatch, which is easily identifiable. Now there's not enough of a market for the rep factories to bother making a superclone and all that's left are shitters

I was lucky enough to get my grail watch recently, a Sapphire Sandwich, at a screaming price ($3600 with box and papers!) I love this thing.

It came with a couple caveats. First, the prior owner was a dipshit and scratched it up pretty good. A couple of the scratches might be at laser-welding level but I'm no expert. (I bought this bracelet, it's a Forstner.)

The bigger problem is the lack of service. The watch was first purchased in 2014 from an Omega AD. The seller said it was serviced when he bought it preowned from a jewelery store, but I called them and they have no record of any service. That means it may have been 12 years since it got lubed up.

This leaves me with a couple options. I'm in NYC. I could take it to a local shop to be serviced and polished, but I'm hesitating because a) the interval since the last service is so long, and it's possible that beyond adding lubricant internal parts will need to be replaced; and b) I'm terrified of amateur overpolishing and want to retain the sharp edges of the lugs.

The other option is to send it to Omega for their service, but it's $1,000, and could take months. I also don't really understand whether potential replacement parts are included in that figure.

What would you do in my shoes? I'm hoping to own this watch for the rest of my life.
