Vietnam Dummy Rounds

Picked these 1969 “experimental” training dummies up at a pawn shop yesterday. One box is open and missing one round. The other is still factory sealed (and will stay that way in my Nam field gear collection). Paid $10 cash out the door for the pair. Google AI tells me the sealed one is worth up to $45. Crazy if true. I’m not mad that one of the boxes is already open. I can use that box as intended and keep the other unopened. Kinda amazing to stumble across something like these, especially the unopened one.

Vintage Toob Upper Ready for 7/27

Finally got my $5 gunshow find, original Bushmaster freefloat tube cut and installed on my old grey A2 upper. Also used a drill press to drill and tap holes for mounting older Weaver rails to for mounting light and forward grip.

Thanks to several other posters in this sub that shared their process.

Timing this type and getting everything drilled and cut square to the receiver was a little nerve wracking. I also cut the slot with for the fsb too narrow so I ended up doing a lot of filing to get the needed clearance. I think if I do another it will be the 2 piece kind.

Still, really happy with sticking true to the original pattern using vintage parts. Stay tuned for final form.

Hanging a canoe with pulley system

Since some people were interested, here’s how I rigged my canoe pulley system in my garage. It is a one person job to raise or lower each canoe.

Shown are my first version using plywood and an improved version using 2x4s. The basic design is a pair of 2x4s cut about a foot wider than the gunnels at the 1/3 point on the boat.

A hole is drilled in each end and a length of 9mm static line (rock climber so I have plenty of rope to play with) is tied off with a stopper knot in each hole. Those are slid to the 1/3 points and clip to a pulley that has a built in carabiner like clip that has been threaded onto the rope below the anchor pulley and the midpoint pulley pair.

The rope is anchored to an eye bolt with a figure-8 knot. Then it goes down to the clip pulley and back up to the first pulley. Then it travels parallel to the ceiling to the first of the paired pulleys. Then down to the second clip pulley and back up to the second pulley in the pair. From there it goes to one more single pulley past the end of the canoe and near the garage wall and then down to a boat dock cleat.

By pulling on the rope the canoe lifts in a little see-saw motion: the closest end rises first and after a few pulls, you push the end of the canoe back down below horizontal. Keep pulling rope and it will need to be corrected again with a push towards the floor. Once it is raised all the way up it will look like these pictures. Then you tie off the rope on the cleat.

I used 9mm static line. It doesn’t stretch but regular climbing rope or even something from the hardware store would work. But you don’t want to use a thin line like paracord, as it is harder on your hands than a thicker line.

Dropping down a canoe is even easier, and often doesn’t need the angle correction. If you rig it right you could drop it right onto your vehicle rack.

Cheers!

Thrifted El Camino with No Digipack- No Problemlo

Nothing revolutionary but kinda fun. Found a Black Keys cd in good shape at the thrift, but it was in a blank case with no art. I downloaded the images of the booklet cover and tray back. Brought it into InDesign that I use for my work. Duplicated the spine art and sized everything to spec. Printed out and cut to size. I think the DIY works pretty good for this album. The old school black tray and plain jane case seem more appropriate for the cd’s graphics than the original digipack. And now it fits in with my cased collection.

Please help date/ID This Slim Zippo From My Dad

Looking through the base stamp guides I didn’t see this one. It belongs to my 86 year old dad but he doesn’t remember much about it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
