South Island - Alternates and Logistics

Hello,

My partner and I are planning a South Island TA hike starting mid-January 2027 going northbound. Planning for 60 days, but can be flexible. We just have some commitments where we need to be back in the U.S. by April 15th.

We are comfortable with Class II/III climbing, have some light mountaineering experience, and lots of backcountry snow travel (we like to splitboard in winters).

I have been scouring the internet for all the best alternates, this is what we are planning so far (Obviously these alternates are dependent on weather and snow conditions):

- Mt Luxemore addition out and back (half of the Kepler Track)

- Mt. Aspiring NP: Routeburn Track -> Serpentine Traverse -> 5 passes (will hit the 5 passes track partway through and will finish loop going clockwise). I think we would hitch into Queenstown before starting the Routeburn track, then hitch back into Queenstown after completing the 5 passes route. Is this track doable at the end of january? (i.e. snow free and no winter gear needed)

- Rees Dart Track: after hitching to Queenstown the 2nd time. Possibly go up to Colin Todd Hut or the Rob Roy Glacier on this track.

- Gillepsie/Rabbit Track: depending on snow and weather. Unsure if it will be snow free by late January/early Feb? Rabbit Pass looks not great with snow on it. Has anyone done this going north?

With all these alternates so far, we would possibly skip from the greenstone river to Gladstone. Would we miss anything worth seeing on that Section?

- Melina Ridge Alternate

- Ball Pass or Mueller Hut addition: Mt. Cook area, might need snow gear for Ball Pass.

- Is Mt. Sunday worth going to?

- Arthur NP addition: Barker Hut to Avalanche Peak

- Pfiefer Bivy addition: might go up to the Bivouac for a night

- Lewis Pass (West) -> Thompson Pass Alternate: We would skip from halfway through the Lewis Pass rd to Waius Pass- would we miss anything worth seeing? Or is the ALT better?

- Angeles Hut / Sunset Saddle Alternate

- Red Hill Range Alternate

Would love to know if we are missing any good alternates? Any cool huts worth going off the main TA for? I was also considering the Milford track but it seems hard logistically and reserving the huts in advance when we are long distance hiking seems difficult.

Also, would love to get some feedback on all of these and know how sketchy they are for a northbound hiker (in regards to snow and needed winter gear- crampons, axes, helmets). Any help or feedback is appreciated- especially for Ball Pass, Rabbit Pass, and the Serpentine Traverse.

Thinking about fostering

Like the title states, I've been thinking about signing up to foster cats for my local animal shelter. My partner and I love cats but just aren't ready for the long term commitment of adopting one ourselves. We do not have any animals at home.

We have a 2 bedroom, 2 bath place. The cat we could foster would either have a safe space in the 2nd bathroom (kind of small) or the 2nd bedroom which has a desk and dresser in it.

I guess I am looking for advice, things we should purchase? The shelter says this on their website: "We provide all of the foster animal's medical care, food, cat litter and all of the other necessary supplies to be able to provide top-notch foster care in the comfort of your own home." So it sounds like we would maybe just purchase a litter box, toys, scratching posts, heat pad if it is a kitten?

I am also wondering if in between cats, should we thoroughly clean our house so the next cat doesn't get scared/nervous by the smell of the previous cat? Not sure if that is something to be concerned about.

My partner and I both have full-time in person jobs (15 min drive from our house). So my concern is not being home for 40 hrs a week while we are fostering. Would this set up not be ideal for fostering?

Obsessed with my ring!!

My partner did such a good job. I wanted an antique or vintage 3 stone & low profile ring with the middle being green. We originally wanted peridot (Fiancés birthstone), but our jeweler put us off of it since it is isn’t a very hard stone/will scratch easy. So went with a green sapphire instead. He ended up buying an antique ring (120 years old) and swapped out the middle stone with a green sapphire and had a lot of the prongs around the diamonds re-worked on as the jeweler said they needed it.

I love it! The sapphire is really interesting- it looks turquoise in the sun and green in the shade, such an interesting gem!

Chances of getting a DCF tent fixed?

Super bummed. We just got this (used) Durston 2p DCF Xmid and our first weekend with it, a branch from a tree fell and ripped it in a storm. I emailed Durston support but still waiting to hear back.

Wondering the chances of being able to repair this? Has anyone else sent in a DCF tent for repair?

Selling a gently used, older version Xmid 2. It weighs ~37oz, it is a tad bit heavier than what they sell now. Bought a year ago on Reddit. Previous owner probably had 20 nights on it. And my partner and I used it over the summer for probably a dozen nights. It is in great condition. One hole in the mesh that we put gear tape on. I want to say it is 3 years old.

Does anyone know why 210d gridstop stopped being sold everywhere? I’m specifically trying to find a light tan with white grid. I know the new norm is UltraGrid from challenge or the venom gridstop from RSBTR. But I’m really trying to find this specific color, based in USA.

I found one small brand in Australia that still sells this but they don’t ship to USA. Please help!

I want to make a backpack out of this fabric but can’t source it.
