South Side 30s/40s (etc. etc.) Physical Media Thrift Crawl is TODAY at NOON!

People from the Internet,

Happy Saturday and congrats on surviving another week on Earth. Just stopping by to confirm that the thrift crawl is on for today.

We will be at Big Dog Coffee Shop at noon. We'll both be wearing teal. Optional bonus points will be awarded if you're also wearing teal. When you get there at noon, find someone in teal and ask, "Hey, are you from the internet?" Boom. You just found the group and made friends with a totally normal real-life human.

We'll head out to the first stop (Goodwill) at 12:30pm. Don't be late!

See you later!!!

South Side Physical Media Thrift Crawl for 30s/40s Childfree Introvert Nerds and Other Cool People Who Enjoy Movies, Music, and/or Books, or Possibly Don't Like Any of Those Things or Fit into Any of Those Categories but Still Want to Make Some Friends (Saturday, August 15 @ noon)

Put some fries on that word salad. Also, the proper title-case capitalization rules are simply too complicated.

I digress...

My partner [38f] and I [38m] just moved here from Boston and we're looking for friends. We like thrift stores, movies, and an occasional walk... so what if we combined all of those things into a relaxed Saturday meetup?!

We'll plan on assembling at Big Dog Coffee at noon since it has tons of parking nearby at South Side Works and a few bus stops. We'll both wear something teal so we'll be easy to spot in the coffeeshop. If we look like psychopaths, you can always just grab a coffee and leave without saying hi. We'll never know. Super low stakes.

At 12:30pm (sharp!) we'll depart on the thrift crawl at whatever pace the vibes dictate. Here's a tentative plan:

  1. Goodwill (2700 E Carson St)
  2. Mega Collectables and More (1923 E Carson St)
  3. The Exchange (1709 E Carson St)
  4. Vinegar Syndrome (1410 E Carson St)
  5. Slacker (1304 E Carson St)
  6. Salvation Army Thrift Store (855 E Carson St)

It's around a 1-mile straight shot down Carson Street. If you get bored, tired, or just aren't having fun, you can always just peel off. Tell us that your parking meter is going to expire. We don't judge. Again, super low stakes.

If the group needs a snack or a restorative beverage, I bet we can find a place somewhere along Carson to sit for a bit. Or the collective group can just go rogue and abandon the thrift crawl and get beers and cocktails. You won't have to twist our arms. All of this is to say that the plans can be flexible and guided by whoever shows up. I'll even try to schedule some good weather.

There's no need to reply to this post... you can just show up at noon. Or you can reply. Or DM. Or whatever. You're a fully grown adult with free will. You can even choose to spend your Saturday watching this 10-hour video of paint drying, which is probably also a pretty fun option. Totally your call.

Hope to see you Saturday!

Bold marketing choice by Four Seasons Brewing

Jagoff Juice?!! Is it for consumption by jagoffs? Or do they juice the jagoffs? So many questions…

Let's go to a Halloween movie marathon (Friday, October 9 @ 11am)

Row House Lawrenceville just announced their 4th annual Cult-O-Rama: 13 Hours of Terror Marathon. I [38m] just grabbed a ticket. Looks like they're selling out fast. Not saying that we all have to sit together and hold hands for 13 hours or anything, but if a group of people all wanted to skip work, grab a morning coffee, and kick off October with an all-day binge, that'd probably be fun 🎃

Local Movie Marathons?

Probably a long shot, but does anyone know of any local theaters that do movie marathons? My partner [38F] and I [38M] just moved from Boston and the annual movie binges are one of the few things that I'll really miss.

Just as an example, one of the local Boston theaters has a themed 12-hour halloween horror marathon every year. It's an awesome tradition. Last year's theme was creature features and the year before that was mad scientists.

The local drive-in theater does a similar all-night halloween marathon every year.

There's an annual 24-hour sci-fi marathon that's going on its 52nd year --- always a phenomenal program and a super dedicated community. It's a full 24 hours of euphoric escapism, sleep deprivation, and caffeine overload with a theater full of fellow sci-fi enthusiasts.

Last year the same theater did a Godzillathon... 12 solid hours of Godzilla movies. It was awesome.

Also some trilogy marathons---the Night of the Demons trilogy at Cinema Salem and the annual Long of the Rings binge.

Hopefully that gives a good idea of what I'm talking about. There's something about these events that really builds community and friendships... anything similar in the Pittsburgh area?

C.H.U.D. (1984)

I found the dvd in a thrift store for $2 so I figured I’d give it a watch. Honestly can’t decide whether I liked it or not. There were definitely some really fun parts, but the plot felt somewhat slow. Maybe even a bit tedious. The creature effects were good, but not in a really serious way. It was all sort of goofy, but not necessarily funny. I definitely didn’t dislike it, but it just feels a bit meh. Very curious what other people think about it.

Maybe I just wasn’t watching it with the right mindset… a beer or two might have helped. Seems more like a MST3K kind of movie that needs to be watched in a group. I’ll probably revisit it in October with some friends and a bit more banter!

Fun fact: Kids These Days™️ have started calling VHS tapes “slabs” because they’re a flat chunk of plastic. True story. We’re that old. 📼

Epic slabbing.
