All Trails versus Gaia

I am planning backpack between St John's Ledges in Connecticut and Mount Algo. When I check Gaia versis All Trail. Gaia says 5.4 miles and 1500 feet elevation. All Trails says 9.4m and 2500 feet elevation gain.

Generally speaking which have you found more accurate. Thanks.

Lump of Labor Fallacy Still Hold?

As an econ undergrad we learned that automation can create new jobs and markets so we shouldn't fear innovation. But there was always a level of skill upwards that humans could climb. With AI, is this no longer true? Will new human jobs still be created. Is the lump of labor still a fallacy?

Catskills Backpacking

My plan is to do a 3 day in the catskills. I am all about the scenic overlook. My perfect backpack would be 80% exposed ridgeline, but I know that won't happen here in NY. I have been told the Escarpment Trail by Windham is my best bet. Would you all agree? Thanks.

Chat GPT has officially solved it

We can stop debating.

"A mixed-market capitalist system works best.

More precisely: predominantly private ownership + competitive markets + strong rule of law + limited but competent government intervention.

That combination has the best overall track record for producing high productivity, innovation, rising living standards, consumer choice, and economic dynamism.

The government should primarily handle things markets don't handle well—public goods, externalities, basic infrastructure, competition policy, financial regulation, and a social safety net—rather than directing most production."

Backpacking

So I have backpacked a few trips along the AT. I love tbe peaks but the green tunnel can be monotonous for me. I was thinking about the Adironacks to hopefully see some more varied scenery. Would anyone have recommendations for certain areas/trails where I might see some open areas mixed in with the forest. Thanks.

Very high titer but no symptoms

Years ago, my doctor notice something odd in my blood so ran and SSA/Ro test. The lab results were so high that she couldn't believe I had no sjogren symptoms. She ran the tests again and it was the same. She said it was the highest she had ever seen. My recollection is that it was over 30,000.

Still no symptoms but someone actually told me I should consider donating my blood for research because it could show a research how my body manages this.

Does this make sense to anyone. Could I actually be helpful?

LASH

I am just getting into backpacking and doing trips in upstate New York and Berkshires. Honestly, all the canopy isn't that enjoyable to me. I was thinking of doing a LASH and it looks like Virginia would be good for me - varied terrain, pass through some towns, panoramic views. Is my understanding correct? Any other sections you'd recommend? Thanks.

Training

So I am training to do a good trip - about 20 miles over 2 days nd and 4000 elevation gain. But I live in New York City. My backpack, stairclimbihg routine doesn't seem to be getting it done. I was tired after doing 8 miles and only 1000 ft elevation gain this weekend.

Any recommedations about good workouts? Thanks

Catskills

I want to do my first solo backpacking trip and I was thinking someplace relatively tame. Catskills, New York seems like a reasonable trip. Anyone recommend the best loops for the best scenery? Also, would a garmin (or other gps) be essential. Thank you.

Religion

When I speak to some communists, they sound as if they are similar to religious people. As a religious person myself, I note the similarities. We have a book we believe is divinely inspired. We study it to find meaning and apply it. These communists seem to idolize Marx so much, studying his work like it is that of a prophet.

Training

I am the kind of person who works best with structured training. I am looking for the best wildeness survival schools on the east coast. I read good things about SOLO up in New Hamspire. They have a weekend course. But I feel like this wouldn't be long enough. I live in NYC.

Any recommendations. Thank you.

Foot care, plantar fasciitis

As I train more, this old problem is starting to come back. Has anyone here struggled with this. Would you have any recommendations (footwear, orthodontics, exercises?) Thanks.

New York City- Indian Head Pennies and Jefferson Nickels

Hello. I inherited some of these coins and I went to a place in New Jersey. They guy just looked at the coins quickly didnt inspect for flaws. Just offered me a flat price.

Does anyone know of an expert on NYC who will go over them carefully. My understanding is that simple flaws can drastically increase the value (can you tell that I know nothing about coins?)

Thank you

Private Property

The DSA vision of a day without capitalism imposed radical changes in private property ownership. How far does this go? Are Marxists Leninists calling for land reform so larger private homes can be redistributed to people in need? Or is it more about just building more public housing. How about rental properties. Would they be permitted?

Will AI Destroy Capitalism

Does AI change the debate between economic systems? In a world where AI can outperform human intellect, how does a human provide value in the economy, thereby justify a wage. I am a capitalist but I just wonder if AI change the entire value proposition. There was always another skill level you could jump up after automation replaced what you were doing. But that seems gone.

Quite simply, will AI destroyed capitalism.

Trowel

What do you all think about trowels. stupidly spent $50 on this trowel toilet paper, bag, combo thing that is heavy and realized I can replicate this with a ziploc bag and a $3.50 plastic. Then I saw a thru hiker saying just use your hands or poles.

What do you think? Thanks.
