Pokewalker help

Ive been thinking of purchasing a pokewalker to level up my pokemon. I walk around 25k steps, on work days.

My question is, can I leave the pokewalker turned on in my pocket all day or am I required to constantly interact with the device e.g. battle / find items ?

Finally got my Plain Badge!!!

Initially tried playing Crystal last year but gave up after being stuck at the second gym. Recently restarted and I committed. Took me about 15 tries but I am beyond releaved. Me and my Quilava are gonna have it easy from here on out!
