Bliish.space: an open source MySpace revival
Bliish.space is an ultra-fast, lightweight, open-source social platform with customizable profiles, no ads, no tracking, and simple, affordable self-hosting. It includes profiles, wall posts, friends, favorites, props, blogs, comments, groups, notifications, private messages, automoderation and user-friendly admin tools.
I need contributors for my open-source Reddit alternative
It’s a lightweight, open-source social platform with customizable profiles, no ads, no tracking, and simple, affordable self-hosting.
Basically, it’s as if Reddit, Facebook, and MySpace had a baby (don’t ask me how).
If you want to contribute, feel free to help! Thank you 🙏
I lied.
There is an algorithm on Bliish...
But it is only available to me. I just built it for fun to challenge myself on how to architect a simple algorithm, using Reddit as inspiration.
Should I release it? I don’t mind keeping it for myself, but some members asked for it so they can quickly see what’s happening within their groups at a glance without spending too much time scrolling.
Let me know. Once again, I'll just listen to the Bliish community.
Maybe you felt it already, but I just pushed a BIG update
I’ve been working really hard this week on the app architecture level to properly clean, organize and tighten up the codebase.
The buggy, slow, janky Bliish is gone… Now Bliish is fast, smooth and snappy.
Of course it’s still far from perfect, but I feel like now we went from an ‘open beta’ experience to a proper v1 release and IMO it's not bad at all for a platform that is just 72 days old.
Try to clear up your cache, close and re-open (or refresh) the app and you should instantly feel the difference.
I had to demote several mods.
I have recently had to demote several mods.
This was a difficult decision, but it became clear they were attempting to take control of Bliish for their own reasons: could be malicious, for profit, for fun... I honestly don't know and don't want to know.
If you are worried about safety, I only kept the mods I can actually trust so Bliish is still fully moderated.
This situation is a painful reminder to be cautious about who you trust online.
Since I brought these mods on, the environment in our private mods Discord became progressively toxic. I was being insulted, told the app was pure sh*t (from people using it all day every day btw) and constantly pressured to share the source code. It started little by little in the beginning, but it has now reached a point where it happens every day. Some mods even tried to doxx my identity by investigating Bliish LLC public info (wtf?!).
I always refused these requests politely and explained that user data and safety are too important to hand over the keys to the platform to strangers. Because of the constant harassment, I stopped visiting the Discord server to protect my mental health. It was making me anxious, which is the exact opposite of the positive environment I want to build on Bliish.
Now here is a small story OGs will remember: one of the leaders of this "mutiny" was caught in the early days of Bliish sneakily promoting their own platform named 'Bliishliinks' (how creative...) on old posts and then deleting the comments to hide their tracks once the user saw the comment and joined their web app so I won't see. I caught them red-handed, they apologized and I chose to give them a second chance by making them a moderator. Spoiler alert: it was not a good idea.
Now, these individuals are apparently building their own platform. Since they failed to get their hands on the Bliish source code, they are instead copying my exact style and using their accounts to spam Bliish with promotions or saying how evil Bliish is.
I urge you to be extremely careful. These users have proven themselves to be untrustworthy. I strongly recommend against signing into their platform, as you have no way of knowing how your private information will be handled.
Now, this is a "he said, she said" situation, and I hate that drama has been brought to our platform. They have even gone as far as leaking private conversations screenshots. I will not ban them, as I do not believe in censorship, but please be aware that much of what they share is either a distortion of reality or a straight up lie. I think it's pretty easy to tell given how they communicate and spam (but I might be biased).
They have even claimed Bliish is "vibe-coded"... Anyone who understands development just a bit knows that vibe-coding could never build a fully functional platform like this. I have always been transparent about using AI tools for coding assistance (just like the developers at Bluesky, Mastodon and every other major platform we all use) but the whole design and architecture is 100% me. The content on the platform remains AI-free and that won't change.
I may lose some users who choose to believe their story, but I have been honest since day one. You can choose to support a solo developer having fun building a non-toxic community and bringing together 4,000 (and growing) amazing members.
Or you can join a group focused on spreading negativity and drama, but if you are looking for that just go to Reddit or Twitter and please leave Bliish.
Of course, I archived proof for everything, but I would hate to share private conversations and bring even more drama here. It is completely against my beliefs and Bliish values. As you can see, they do not follow the same principles and literally pollute the platform with toxicity, drama, spam and negativity.
This is the last time I will ever speak on this topic. I know that karma and time will eventually reveal the truth.
I am moving past this now and Bliish is only getting stronger! Let's get back to the fun stuff and spread positivity! :)
Bliish merch is here!
If you love Bliish and want to help cover the server costs, or if you just need a sick T-shirt, you can visit blii.shop
I tried to create several different design styles so everyone can find something that fits their look.
Also, with every purchase, you get 3 months of Supporter for free! This includes cool extra perks like animated profile pictures, special emojis (including the infamous :putnam:), plenty of new themes, custom GIF uploads, and more...
I think it is a creative way to show some stats without tracking private info about members.
It's also more interesting than a simple user count widget imo
This is just the very first version, but I will improve it as I come up with more interesting ideas. I might even make it Open Source if other indie social media platforms want to use it!
Bliish Lite is a no-JavaScript, ultra lightweight version of Bliish.com. It loads in under 45 kilobytes, needs nothing more than a browser that can render HTML, and works whether you are visiting from an e-ink device, a vintage phone, a retro game console or the latest laptop on a slow connection.
Now it is cleaaaaan and way easier to make new ones!
This is perfect because I’m bored and coding a bunch of new ones right now. For example, I just added: Lucifer, Dr. Banner and Rainbow (my favorite).
Give me your ideas and I’ll make the best ones! Only color themes for now please. Don't ask for features that don’t exist in the current customization options.
A social media that runs on anything
Bliish Lite is the no-JavaScript, lightweight version of Bliish, the anti-social social network. It loads in under 50 kilobytes, requires nothing more than a browser that can render HTML, and works whether you are visiting from a vintage computer, a classic phone, a retro game console, or the latest laptop on a slow connection.
Built for retro and old hardware
Bliish Lite boots cleanly on devices that the modern web has long since left behind. Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6 render the page just fine. The Wii Internet Channel and the PSP browser load Bliish Lite without missing a feature... If your device speaks HTTP and parses HTML, Bliish Lite is for you.
Also instantly fast on modern devices
Even on the newest iPhone or a fiber connection, Bliish Lite is the fastest social network you have used. No JavaScript bundle to wait for, no client-side rendering, no tracking pixels, no analytics scripts. Each page is small enough to send over a 2G connection in less than a second. Battery life on portable devices is dramatically longer because there is nothing keeping the CPU awake.
Same anti-social network, fewer requirements
Bliish Lite shares the same friend graph, the same chronological feed, and the same content as the full Bliish. There are no ads, no algorithm, no AI-generated content, and no engagement-bait notifications. It is a quiet, friend-only social network in the spirit of the early internet, now stripped down to its bare HTML so it works on anything you happen to be holding.
It might going to kill my eyesight, but this is so cool!
Edit: You can try it using the link lite.bliish.com If that link doesn't work (because it doesn't on some device, like this one), you can try bliish.com/lite
