Anyone else want MK2's story to finally move beyond Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, Quan Chi, and Shinnok?

I've always felt the next Mortal Kombat game has a great opportunity to shift the focus to a different era of the lore.

I'd love to see Shang Tsung, Shao Kahn, Quan Chi, and Shinnok take a back seat. They can absolutely remain playable (even as DLC if needed), but I'd rather they not be the central villains of the story again.

Instead, I'd love the story to fully explore Edenia's royal family and mythology, with characters like Daegon, Delia, and especially Onaga finally getting the spotlight they deserve.

The main heroes could be a new generation of protagonists:

  • Kenshi
  • Taven
  • Shujinko
  • Li Mei
  • Khameleon

Meanwhile, Rain, Tanya, Chameleon, and a few new Edenian characters could serve as the primary supporting antagonists.

The classic pillars of the franchise: Liu Kang, Raiden, Kung Lao, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Kitana, Jade, Sindel, Sonya, Johnny Cage, Jax, and Reptile, would still play major roles, but they wouldn't necessarily have to be the central protagonists this time.

For bosses, I'd love something similar to the structure of the original trilogy

  • Blaze as the sub-boss (like Goro)
  • Daegon as the secondary boss (like Shang Tsung)
  • Onaga as the final boss (like Shao Kahn)
  • Delia, another mystery/twist evil character controlling the story

I think this would finally refresh the series while still respecting its legacy and give a lot of underused characters a chance to become fan favorites.

Do you think the next two State of Plays will break Sony’s recent first-party reveal cycle?

Sony has generally been following a fairly predictable State of Play approach this generation (since January 2024): reveal a new first-party game (or PlayStation-owned IP) and release it within roughly a year.

  • Jan 2024: Until Dawn (released in 9 months)
  • May 2024: Astro Bot (released in 3 months)
  • Sep 2024: Ghost of Yotei (released in 12 months)
  • Feb 2025: Saros (released in 14 months)
  • Jun 2025: Marvel Tokon (released in 13 months)
  • Sep 2025: Wolverine re-reveal (released in 12 months)
  • Feb 2026: God of War Trilogy Remake (PS6?) & God of War: Sons of Sparta (Same day)
  • Jun 2026: God of War: Faye (rumored to release within a year)

The one thing that stands out is the God of War Trilogy Remake reveal from February 2026. Assuming it doesn't follow the same release window as the other recent announcements, it would be the first notable exception to this approach.

That got me thinking: are we reaching the point where Sony's remaining unannounced projects are increasingly PS6-focused rather than PS5-focused?

What are your expectations for the next few State of Plays?

  • Sep 2026 (Intergalactic re-reveal?)
  • Feb 2027 (Media Molecule's new IP?)
  • Jun 2027 (PS6-focused showcase: Venom, Spider-Man 3, Horizon 3, God of War Trilogy update, Team LFG's game, Bend's game, Team Asobi's next project, etc.)

Personally, I think September 2026 and February 2027 will mostly close out the PS5 reveal cycle, while June 2027 could be Sony's biggest show since 2020 if that's when they begin unveiling a significant portion of the PS6 lineup.

Do you think Sony still has several major PS5 first-party games left to announce, or are we entering the transition period where most of the big surprises are being saved for PS6? If so, should we expect the next two State of Plays to be the first in years not to feature a brand-new first-party reveal?
