The number of memes I’m seeing about this incident is honestly insane. What’s even more concerning is how many people are using it as an excuse to be openly misogynistic, making derogatory and disrespectful comments about women as a whole.

What happened was obviously wrong, and the victim did not deserve it. But somehow, in the guise of discussing this incident, many have decided that all women are bad and that men are the real victims in this country. That conclusion is neither reasonable nor supported by reality.

When women express caution because of the sheer number of rapes and murders committed against women every day, they are often labelled “man-haters” for being careful. Yet when an incident like this occurs, sweeping generalisations about women are suddenly treated as acceptable.

Sometimes it feels like some men are simply looking for a reason to hate an entire gender and position themselves as victims. The scale of coverage around this incident is so overwhelming that I know more about it than I do about any rape or murder that may have occurred in the news today or yesterday. Crimes against women rarely receive this level of attention, public outrage, or sustained discussion.
