Questions about Belmont

Hi folks-

I’m going to FordhamU for grad school, so I’ll be living in the area for a couple years. I’ll probably end up living in Belmont, and had some questions:

I have a car (don’t want to get rid of it since I don’t see myself living in NYC post-grad), and I’m curious what street parking is like. Is is hard to find parking, is any of it metered, is theft an issue at all, etc?

Also, I’m unsure how much talk of that area being dangerous is exaggerated. Is is actually advised against to be walking alone at night? Even if it’s on a main road? I’m from a more medium-sized city, so I know how to be smart at night, but obviously a city of ~500,000 is nothing like NYC.

Lastly, if you guys could give any recommendations on local food/bars, that would be great! I’d love to check out some new places while I’m there. I’m looking for a bar where I can drink, play some cards with friends, and chat with other adults without having to take a train ride

Thank you!

How to get over the discomfort of working with someone with vastly different political views?

Hi all-

So I consider myself very left-leaning. My politics are tied to my morals, and the majority of my beliefs stem from wanting to respect the culture and land of other people, and feeling empathy for people who go through hardship due to systematic issues.

I am in a small lab group. One of my peers is very conservative. While they are a nice person, I feel very uncomfortable whenever I think about their political views. For example, I am for a free Palestine, while they are pro-Israel and have worked in organizations advocating for the removal of Palestinians. It disgusts me to think
about, and I feel like I am performing amiability every time we speak. They don’t know my views and there has been zero conflict regarding this.

For those of you who have been in similar situations, how did you work past these feelings? How do you work closely with people knowing that you have vastly different morals/politics?
